Google "What happened to Jordan Ibe" and you'll find some articles where he speaks of his depression and mental health challenges.

I guess he had a lot of pressure on him as a teenager - Liverpool buying him from Wycombe, breaking into the first team as a teenager and being touted as the next Raheem Sterling - and has found it difficult to cope with that pressure and also struggled with his form slipping as a result, whilst he slides down the leagues.

Just goes to show how important mentality is to being a successful sports person.

How much do clubs do to protect the mental wellbeing of their players, especially the younger ones? I presume it varies from club to club but are there any basic standards that, say, EPL clubs have to meet? What provisions do Liverpool have? One for the Eds I would think!

{Ed0666's Note - no idea about the mental health provisions at Liverpool mate but you do make a salient point. Bi-polar, schizophrenia, depression are real illnesses and not just ways for people not to work. We need to highlight these ailments as they are more profound and debilitating than people think. I have a family member who is suffering right now and seeing him in a psych ward is heartbreaking and one wants to be in one of them believe me. I hope the footballing authorities have protocols for this zeddicus as this isn’t as easy as treating a torn hamstring mate

If you check his Instagram account he explains it in his own words, but basically he really struggled with his mental health and ended up falling out of love with football. A very sad but unfortunately familiar story.

Was around the wrong crowd if I remember correctly. That, along with the fact he didn’t have the drive to push up another level.

{Ed0666's Note - mental health issues also mate.

At least nowadays the fact he can state his mental health issues and not be stigmatised for it has to be a good thing? As a previous post said "didn't have the drive to push on to the next level". I don't believe that for one second. Wonder how many promising young footballers, who to the outside world have everything you could ever wish for, have been lost to the game over the years. Some need to remember that being a footballer is these lads job, so there is going to be days they don't want to go to work or have to drag themselves in. Show me a person on here that says they haven't had a day like that and I'll show you a liar. Hopefully he's getting the help he needs and returns to the game again.

Alonso1786, that's a bit harsh. I saw a recent podcast where JI actually says that he had to leave LFC as soon as Mane arrived and he never recovered his confidence since then. Things got so tough for him that he started having mental issues esp when he split from his partner with whom he had a child with. That only made things worse.

Don't know about him moving with the wrong crowd but his depression and mental health problems were a huge hinderance to him pushing up a level. Cut the kid some slack. He has been through a whole lot that actually have nothing to do with his ability as a footballer.

Mental health and the fact he wasn’t that good anyway.
He Probably believed the hype of being on the same level as Raheem when he wasn’t and never recovered.

LFC08, it would not matter either way. Mental Health and Depression issues will rob you of whatever confidence and mental strength you think you have. And you don't know if he believed whatever hype so stop attacking him with your own projections as you have NO proof to support your claims. That's just weak kicking a young guy when he is down.

JI may not have been good enuff for us BUT very few young player are esp with what we would become under club at the tie he left. The kid has been thru a lot in his life so let the baseless attacks stop.

My mom suffered from depression for years after my father passed and know she went thru. I would be pissed off if someone attacked her with baseless claims w/ o ever having spoken to her or even known her.

Poor bloke I hope he finds peace and happiness.

Depression does not give a fig for how much money you have or what you do for a living.
Its a sickness that is very difficult to explain to those who have never suffered from it.
It sneaks up on you when you least expect it and can cripple you from doing the most basic of tasks, getting out of bed in the morning being the most basic of all.
Once it has its claws into you it does not want to let go, it takes a enormous amount of strength and will power to fight it off and enable yourself to go about your day in the usual manner.
OliRed: I hope your mother is doing fine and has found a way to live her life as normally as she can, your love and the rest of your families love will be a massive help to her.
As Bob Dylan once said : don't criticize what you don't understand.

Guys I didn’t know he had mental health issues. Having suffered depression myself I would never of made such a statement if I had known. Probably got him mixed up with another player. Hopefully he has a strong support system and is getting the help he needs.

I really liked him and thought he had tremendous potential. I remember telling someone in probably 2014 or 15 that he would be better than Sterling. He had that kind of potential in my opinion.

{Ed0666's Note - I remember when we had Ibe and Sterling on each flank I thought we were set for life
