Players like Saul don’t become available too often, if FSG cannot see that there is a beast of a player available for a low fee in comparisons to seasons gone by, then someone else will buy him, and we will miss out on another great potential signing - SIMPLES.

Suppose he wants £300k a week? What knock on effect does that have on Salah's wage demands? Or Virgil's? Or Alisson's? Is it worth having said beast of a player then? The club is not a bottomless money pit.

I want the guy here too, he's quality, but it's not as simple in reality as it may appear from the outside.

We have submitted an offer for him officially i think.

Exactly SR, there are very few players you should be willing to break a wage structure for and I don’t think Saul is one of them. However If he was willing to come and play for wages in line with our top earners than I would be all for it.

He should get at least as much as Thiago and I think that’s £200k a week. If he can’t live on that then jog on.

{Ed025's Note - we could always run a go funding page mark or have a whip round mate.. :)

He's on 300k euro at Athletico, which is a little over £250k. Reportedly the top earners at Liverpool are on £200k.

Now it's not exactly easy to do a direct comparison because we use more incentives and bonuses than most, but it's still a potential issue.

{Ed0666's Note - I’m still amazed atleti offered him a 9 year contract I mean that is just madness for so many reasons. Would playing for Liverpool on a reduced wage be an incentive it should be but why should he when he can get the same money he’s on elsewhere.

Spot on, Ed666. Saul is a great player but at 250k a week? Don’t know about that. And would he be a player to break the wage structure for as SR said? Not sure about that either. If we have made an offer for him, it prolly means we can strike a deal on the wages part of things in the way the contract will be structured. We shall see.

The fact he is on a 9-year contract is hilarious to me. It gives me vibes of that absurd 8-year deal given to Pardew back in the day, though obviously you’d much rather have Saul for a decade than Pardew.

isn't it 300k euro's after tax.

{Ed002's Note - It is before tax and after bonuses.}

13 Jul 2021 12:14:08
Don’t they get taxed a lot less in Spain too?

{Ed002's Note - Not any longer
.}

Transfer speculation is so much easier when you ignore finances. Don't doubt for a minute that FSG and Klopp know all about Saul (and notable others) and what he would bring to the team.
It doesn't change the financial situation though. His wages would be a massive stumbling block, and that's where it ends unfortunately.
