Oli I was just agreeing with ed25 as he made the comment. I tend to agree with him but hope I am wrong and I get the comment regarding Foden and game time. Just my opinion that he won't be a regular in the first team, he is a solid player but has not for me shown enough to suggest he could be special.

Agree0 Disagree0

Eh? He's already a regular in the 1st team. He played 34 times last season. Including 5 Champions League starts and 13 Premier League starts.

So what is considered a first team regular? He's not in the best XI when everyone is fit, I'd agree with that. However 34 appearances, 20+ of them starts, means he's already a first team regular.

He also had more goal involvements than any other midfielder in our squad last season with vital goals against Ajax in Europe and Sheffield Utd in the league.

Transfermarkt already have his markey value at £27m. He's a bonafide Premier League midfielder already at a very young age and he's only going to get better. Not sure what started this nonsense debate, but anybody saying Jones won't make it at Liverpool needs to give their head a wobble.

It's up for debate whether he'll be a Danny Murphy or a Steven Gerrard, but i'll wager with anybody he plays 300 games minimum for Liverpool. He's not even 21 until next January and he's already played just shy of 50 times in his first 2 seasons in the first team squad.

So the people who think this haven't watched Jones then? The boy is class and should of played more already.

There is a "Reply To Above Post" button under each post as well which you should use rather than starting new threads for the same thing.

Everything MK said.

The quality of the modern day footballer has taken a dip anyway. They’re fitter, but less talented imo.
Just look at national sides like Brazil Holland Germany Argentina Spain. Average players everywhere. It makes it exciting that arguably the worst Chelsea team in the last 20 years can win the Champions League but the quality has dipped, for now anyway.

I do agree that I think Curtis will be a very good player but I can understand the point OP is making on regular starts. I was happy to see him get game time last season but a lot was down to the injuries and shuffling the midfield around. If we end up replacing Gini, do you think he’ll make 30+ Appearances? I hope so but should he not, sub appearances and sporadic starts won’t further his development the way we like.

That being said, I still think he’ll be a top player. 300 games is a bold prediction! But hope you’re right!

But he got the 13 PL starts mainly because of the injuries. I don’t know how many starts Williams had but couldn’t call him a first team regular or Phillips for that matter. Without the multiple injuries at the back I don’t think he would have got 5 starts. I agree he has big potential but he has to bring it, he was only ok for me last season.

LancasterRed, i'm inclined to think the same mate. If you watch him you can see that he has the composure and reading of the game to play at a high level. He even filled in at right back to see out a game last season and didn't put a foot wrong. If he avoids injury and doesn't succumb to the fame or fortune, he'll be at Liverpool for as longs as he chooses to be.

I fully accept the debate over how good he will be. That's perfectly fair because there are a lot of factors and variables in football. But how can anyone say he won't be good enough to play for our first team, when he is already good enough? That's a truly baffling assessment.

I'm inclined to believe that the reason we've not rushed out to buy a midfielder this summer is because Klopp wants to give Jones, Ox, Elliott, Keita and Cain chances in pre-season to prove they can replace Wijnaldum. I think Clarkson will go on loan which is why i've omitted him. Grujic, Shaq, Wilson and Minamino will almost certainly leave too. There is a real chance for Jones to go out this summer and force Klopp's hand. He went from 13 appearances to 34 appearances in one season! So who is to say he can't kick on again?

Anyway, i'll stop ranting now. Just annoys me when people write off young players for no logical reason.

13 Jul 2021 14:19:10
True but there's not many 20 year olds ANYWHERE who would be getting many starts if Hendo, Fab, Thiago, Gini, Millie, Ox and Keita were all fit. We have to realise how difficult it is to play regularly here, if Jones was at 75% of the other Premier League teams he'd be starting every week.

13 Jul 2021 14:31:43
MK, I think he’s definitely good enough for our squad but is he good enough to break our first 11 and get regular game time to aid his development? That’s the question that can leave some doubt. I guess time will tell

No need to be annoyed, game of opinions! I recall some on this site people hating firmino whilst others were convinced Kevin Stewart and jay spearing will be first team regulars! Like you said so many factors involved and anything can happen.

Side note, I do hope we sign a midfielder!

13 Jul 2021 14:32:06
markp08 all i'm saying is give him time. Gerrard at the exact same stage of his career (20 years old, first 2 seasons) had 1 goal in 44 appearances. Jones has 7 goals in 47 appearances. If he has half the career with us that Gerrard managed, he'll have done bloody well!

13 Jul 2021 14:43:24
Agreed.

13 Jul 2021 15:29:05
Reyrey, i also hope we sign one but more because i don't trust Ox or Keita to stay fit. That and Milner turns 36 in January.

13 Jul 2021 15:53:06
MK, Good point, i think if we played with a standard number 10 more often i could see him there, he can turn on 6 pence, drop a shoulder, see a pass and has a decent engine, the thing i like the most, is that his first look when receiving the ball is forward, too many players are side and back players, Its one reason i won't miss Gini in the team, he put us on the back foot or knocked our rhythm, Jones is more positive and has more belief in his own ability to beat someone, something Gini had but lacked the bottle to do.

13 Jul 2021 17:04:07
Plus last season he was in an under performing team that was unsettled because of injuries.

13 Jul 2021 19:54:15
OP, your opinion on not thinking CJ will be special is valid. My only response is that it is too early to tell cos he has only had 1 season in the first team esp in a season where it was hell all season long for the whole team. And even then, he more than held his own in the PL and CL. Foden wasn’t doing any of that in his first season for City and it took him 3 years to become the player he is now.

Not saying CJ will be as good as Foden BUT it is too early to tell so slow your roll, relax and let the kid either prove you right or wrong in due time. Pretty sure Stephen Gerard wasn’t lighting it up until a good 2/ 3 years.

Once again, stay away from Ed25. The guy watches LFC players with his eyes wide shut.

{Ed025's Note - my problem is that i tell the truth oli, yours is that you dont like hearing it mate.. :)

14 Jul 2021 12:47:54
Nice one, Ed25.

{Ed025's Note - cheers mate..
