With Halland seemingly going to have a better career than his dad, can anyone think of a younger family member who eclipsed the older one? I can't. The closest I can think of is Brian Laudrup who was part of the Euro 92 winning Denmark team. Obviously the rest of his career wasn't as good as his brothers tho.

Agree0 Disagree0

Frank lampard, Pauli Maldini, Nigel Clough, Ox, Micheal Owen.

Brian Laudrup nowhere near eclipsed Michael. Michael was one of the greatest footballers ever and he was highly decorated in his club career, he could absolutely boss a game, one of the most skilful, graceful and brilliant footballers I’ve ever seen, Brian on the other hand was a bit of a flake who only ever wanted an easy life. Denmark won that tournament because of hard work and team effort, not because of Brian Laudrup.

Paulo Maldini of course. How could I forget one of the greatest players who ever laced up a pair of boots.

Bit harsh vvvv, as the son of a rangers fan I waw a lot of Brian Laudrup, and he was super talented and always put a shift in. You're right that Michael was better, but that's because he was one of the best players in the world, but Brian was special too.

There are literally hundreds of footballers who have older brothers who are playing/ played at a lesser level than they themselves.

18 Jul 2021 11:53:23
No way was Nigel a better player than Brian Clough?
Good shouts on the others though grino.

{Ed001's Note - wasn't Brian's career in the second tier?}

18 Jul 2021 12:42:58
From what I've read about Brian Clough he was a prolific scorer until injury hit. I'm them days the 2nd tier wasn't a massive drop from the top tier was it? Plus his managerial days would easily eclipse his sons. I never rated Nigel as a player. Even before he came to us.

{Ed001's Note - but still, as a career performing in the top flight has to be seen as better than performing in the second tier.}

18 Jul 2021 12:47:34
I actually never said Brian eclipsed Michael. I named a tournament that he won and his brother turned the chance to play in down. I also stated that Michael had the better Career as he was obviously the better player. Michael Laudrup was a genious and was even amazing well into his 30s but to call Brian a flake is hugely disrespectful to a very talented player. He didn't work out at Chelsea but personally I don't think his heart was in the move.

18 Jul 2021 12:51:42
Aye, but he still averaged 38 goals a season for 7 seasons running when the 2nd division actually meant something.

{Ed001's Note - I get that, but it is still a second tier and Nigel did it at the top, if that is not better than there is no point in having promotion and relegation.}

Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Oh and Forgot about Ronnie Whelan. His Dad and brother played League of Ireland and his Dad was an Ireland International.

18 Jul 2021 14:13:26
Ronnie Whelan is a strange case. I thought he was brilliant, great passer and tireless engine. He seemed to get better in midfield alongside McMahon than when he played on the left. But speak to my dad's generation about him and many of them don't rate him. It could be due to the special players they grew up with but credit where its due.

Ed091 did Nigel Clough start his time with us well then get struck down with some sickness and never was quite the same player again.

{Ed001's Note - I can't remember off the top of my head what happened with him.}

18 Jul 2021 14:55:26
He started well. A brace against Sheffield weds. Then nothing. I don't know if it was him being over rated or if it was due to the team we had at the time not being very good. He got put in midfield for a bit but again wasn't great. Plus I think a lot of fans didn't want him as around about the time he signed his dad decided to release his autobiography and declare his ridiculous
Opinion about Hillsborough.

18 Jul 2021 15:37:08
Bigbaz he had did have some sickness not sure if it was something like Mario Gotze Had.

18 Jul 2021 16:47:09
I remember Clough scoring twice in a 3-3 draw at Anfield against United. Didn’t know about the sickness. I just thought he struggled at Liverpool and then the emergence of a certain Mr. R. Fowler made him somewhat surplus.

{Ed0666's Note - I thought the same mate I didn’t realize the guy had sickness issues. I just assumed he wasn’t as talented as we’d hoped.

18 Jul 2021 18:09:20
It was the emergence of Robbie Fowler which edge Clough out of the team.

18 Jul 2021 20:05:07
Yeah same here, I never knew about his health issues. I remember seeing him playing for England alongside John Fashanu. What a strange strike force.
