I really think we have our squad now for this season and if we was going to bring in any new players we would of done it before now so the squad can integrate before the season started. A week to go in the window. I'm actually happy with our squad which includes Jones, Elliott both can be like new players this season for us. I'm pretty confident we can compete and if not win the league we will be in the mix.

Agree10 Disagree0

Definitely pal we have a great squad, this is one of the best Liverpool squad's of my lifetime, I don't get all the cry asses.

If we say matip and vvd is first choice cbs for now and Thiago hendo and fabs is cm, with the rest obvious that leaves for me:
Kelleher
Neco Gomez Konate kostas
Elliot/ jones Milner Keita
Mina/ shaq origi jota

Assuming two of mina shaq and origi leave, it just leaves us one attacking option short for me. As it stands, no one in, but if they were to go, I’m sure we will get another wide forward.

19 Aug 2021 18:21:38
With the rest obvious? I think you need to have a word with Klopp as Jota will be playing most weeks.

19 Aug 2021 18:30:37
In cup games if 2 are sold Shaq and Origi Elliott Minamino Jota would be ok or Bobby if Jota was playing ahead of Bobby but I hope not.

I am still a little bit anxious about our lack of quality cover up front and in holding midfield, but the narrative about the lack of depth or improvement in our squad since the title winning season has been vastly overstated by pundits. The depth of our squad has actually improved significantly during that time, with the following players breaking through or establishing themselves in the first team:

Kelleher (a vast improvement on Adrian)
Williams (much better than shunting milner to rb)
Konate (a new starting centre back was one of only two realistic improvements that could have been made to that side)
Tsimikas (see same as Williams)
Thiago (world class and huge step up on Wijnaldum, where there was definite room for improvement)
Jones (tenacious local lad who can be trusted in any game he’s dropped into)
Elliott (destined to be top class and provides options up front and in midfield we didn’t have before)
Jota (the clinical goalscorer we desperately needed)

That is eight new players that have been integrated into the squad and are ready to go. You can see that there has been a clear and significant evolution of the squad that we had at the start of the 2019/ 20 season. Now explain to me how that can be discounted as ‘standing still’, ‘stagnation’ or ‘not moving forward’? what's more, we probably aren’t even done in the transfer market! We could be starting the season with 10 new players and for some pundits that still doesn’t represent improvement!

Yet i’m supposed to believe that because Liverpool haven’t spent mega money this summer, we somehow can’t win the title. It’s the classic pundit fallacy of ‘he who wins the transfer window wins the war’. It very seldom ever works out that way. If you actually look at the squads on paper, Liverpool have the exact same team that won the title only with all of the weak spots of that team already addressed. If we’d brought in all of those players in one summer for loads of money, the pundits would be purring, but because we lost out on silverware in the most disastrous, pointless, dystopian season of football ever played, we suddenly aren’t the ‘It Girl’ anymore.

Yet if you glance at City’s team, on paper they’ve probably got worse since 2018/ 19. Dias is admittedly a fantastic replacement for Kompany, but they’ve also replaced Sane with Ferran Torres, David Silva with Grealish and they’re now trying to replace Aguero with Harry Kane. Does that seriously look like objective improvement? I’m not so sure. Yet i’m supposed to believe that just because huge sums are being splashed around that City will now win every trophy from now until the end of time.

If you ignore the misleading money talk and compare the objective quality of our squad against City and Chelsea’s, it’s still right up there with the best. While i’d concede that both teams have far more strength in depth up front, in midfield and defence a lot of their players are questionable, and i’d still say our best starting XI against either of their’s is superior.

On top of all that, we have the nicest kit, and i’m convinced that more often than not the teams with the nicest kits do the best. No chance are City getting anywhere near the title with that third shirt, if only the pundits did their research then they’d know this.

A good piece the AW, I don’t agree with all of it but I do feel this squad is better, stronger than when we won the cl and pl.

This is our best first 11 and best squad we have ever had in the pl era.

19 Aug 2021 19:29:44
Haha you had me totally agreeing until the kit comment.

From the title winning squad we've replaced Gini with Thiago, Lovren with Konate, Lallana with Minamino and Brewster with Jota. Williams, Elliot and Jones are a couple of years older and more experienced.

In terms of depth it's difficult to argue were not in a much better position.

For me it's form, injuries and momentum that's more important than getting extra players in now.

As long as unsung hero Matip is at the back we will be fine.

Liverpool FC have lost just one of their last 44 league games that Joel Matip has played at centre-back.

19 Aug 2021 19:56:54
AW, you are speaking way too much sense here so watch your back cos the pitchforks are being sharpened as I speak. But all jokes aside, I fully agree with you. The problem is that for the past few years, everything LFC does in the TW is ALWAYS seen or judged thru the prism of what City and to a lesser extent, Chelsea and Utd do or don’t do.

The media till this day, say that LFC are standing still cos we haven’t signed anyone and even many of the LFC fan base have bought such nonsense as if Konate was not signed and it seems just cos he was signed in late May, it doesn’t count. Wait, what?

City have only signed ONE player, same as us yet the media drone on about how City have made big signings. Chelsea the same BUT suddenly they are much better than us all of a sudden after they finished below us with literally NO center backs. And then they say that LFC will finish 4th with all our players back from injury whereas they finished 3rd without them? Yeah, this is the type of foolishness and insanity we are being afflicted with on a daily basis.

As for City, I fully agree that this team is nowhere near the team we went against and bodied in those seasons we slapped them in Europe, bodied them and won the CL and broke them to win the title. Dias is NO Kompany Torres, is NO Sane and Grealish is NO Silva. Sterling has gotten worse, KDB is ravaged by injuries, Laporte and Bernardo want out and Jesus is useless. So much for squad depth, yeah? If LFC had all these issues, the media would be all over us BUT cos it’s City, crickets. I’m fine with our squad and we will be up for it, I’m sure.

The media need to generate revenue, they'll print any old hokum they think that fans will read, even if there's not a shred of truth in it. They know their target group will read it and many will believe it.
Liverpool not signing anyone doesn't generate clicks, Manchester City spending £100 million on one player is like a best selling book to the media.
It's all about the clicks.

Rob Jones was brilliant btw. He was robbed of a fantastic career. I think we will get our momentum back really quickly this season. Have our first 11 ever started a match together? Whether that’s With Firmino or Jota.

19 Aug 2021 21:18:08
Our starting 11 is a match for and better than most, Allison, TAA, Matip, VVD, Robbo, Fab, Henderson, Thiago, Mane, Firmino and Salah is as strong as anything out there. Our centre back options are now very good, we’ve got capable cover in full back areas, we’ve got decent attacking options, for me it’s that midfield area that is a bit of a worry as we have no absolutely competent options if Fabinho and Henderson aren’t available to play as the holding midfielder (please don’t say “But Milner can play there”, because he really can’t) , that position is pivotal to the way we play.

19 Aug 2021 21:33:27
Mark I know that Hendo, Fab and Thiago have yet to play a single minute together as a 3.

19 Aug 2021 21:40:27
I know there is a chance both might be injured at the same time. But that’s like saying if both left backs got injured who would play there? Or if both Salah and Mane got injured who would fill in for Salah. 2 top holding midfielders is more than most sides have. In the the worst case scenario we could play 3 at the back.

19 Aug 2021 23:40:48
Fair enough Mark and i get what you’re saying, but it’s worth remembering that a lack of a proper holding player during those dark winter months was arguably the key contribution to our appalling form. It’s also just worth bearing in mind the age of our midfielders and that fresh legs do need to be added to keep the squad ticking over, lest you end up in a position where they all age and decline all at once. It isn’t hard to envisage a situation where Milner, Keita and Ox all leave next summer and Hendo and Thiago start to show their age, meaning we could end up bedding in two new midfielders at once instead of one at a time. I just think it’s a good idea to keep an eye on these matters rather than delay the inevitable.

{Ed0666's Note - maybe the players desire aren’t available now?

20 Aug 2021 06:37:02
I thought that JK so we have never seen Our best 11. Really looking forward to seeing those 3 in midfield.

20 Aug 2021 08:25:26
Actually, our best midfield 3 started the Merseyside Derby at Everton last season where we went 1 up and could have been two up where we dominated the game until well, everything went to hell in a hand basket.

In those first 20 or so minutes, Everton never saw the ball as we were all over them with the midfield 3 pulling the strings and Everton chasing shadows. They played well as a group overall, IMO. We should have won that game had VAR not happened so we have seen them play together BUT not enuff of a sample size to fully judge them.
