This team as it is today can challenge for the premier league title and champions league. No question. We are getting old, but the club have done a good job at brining in young talent for the future. I would agree that next year would be the time to start upgrading some positions, but today as it stands, I like our chances. Would I like to see a signing, sure, but is it necessary, not in my opinion.

Starting 11, yes, a match for any side, but the squad? No, simply not enough quality in depth in midfield or forward positions compared to the other top four clubs. Top four and a decent champions league run. Send the u23’s for the domestic cups.

31 Aug 2021 12:28:07
I think we have to add an attacker, we are crying out for one.

31 Aug 2021 12:50:36
Delusional if you think we are good enough. Top 4 will be our trophy we are turning into Arsenal.

31 Aug 2021 13:04:40
I don't understand 'the squad isn't good enough to challenge'. That's basically the same squad that won both the Champion's league and league. And before you all chime in with 'aye. but the other teams have strengthened', so have we since we won the league and the others have lost quality players as well.

31 Aug 2021 13:11:04
And so what IF we finish top 4!Look at the success that the club and fans have had since JK took over. Due to CV our transfer budget has been massively hit but yet we still have a very good squad. You ask any fan from any team and they would bite our hand off for the success that we have enjoyed since JK arrived. So Rudder if your not happy with a worst case top 4 finish than I'm really sorry.

31 Aug 2021 13:12:04
Rudder of course we are good enough to challenge. VVD is just getting started and with a focused Allison as well anything is possible.

31 Aug 2021 13:17:18
Johnzandt, the law of diminishing returns also applies to footballers.

And this is also almost the same squad that was unable to defend the self same title last season. What that showed was if we suffered a run of injuries to key personnel, we could not compete.

31 Aug 2021 13:25:44
VVV, no side would have defended the title without the players we lost last season. ****, united lost Ferdinand years ago and their title defence fell apart. Take, Chelsea's 4 CB and one of their main midfielders out of their team and you think they have a title challenge?

31 Aug 2021 13:29:26
This team isn’t winning anything this season there’s no where near enough strength in depth. It’s almost 2022 and some are still living in 2019. I’d be shocked if we fell out of the top 4 but that’s it. Despite what the fans want top 4 is the aim from the club.

31 Aug 2021 13:29:28
This isn't the same squad that defended the title last year.

31 Aug 2021 13:41:20
I don't know how many times I need to repeat myself on this point.

Last season we were by far and away the best team for the first 1/ 3 and final 1/ 3 of the season. For the middle 1/ 3 we were woeful - relegation form.

We have all (including JK) identified that this slump was caused by using midfielders to cover for CB positions due to the knock on effect. We have brought in reinforcements to solve that issue - Konate - and we are also hopeful to not suffer the glut of CB injuries we had last year. As things stand we have VVD, Gomez, Konate, Matip, Phillips and Williams, albeit the latter may go on loan.

If we had played at "top 4" form level all season then I would be much more worried. We played at "Champions" level for 2/ 3 of the season and an eff-up in how we set up the team resulted in a disastrous run of 10-12 games in the middle.

Also, regarding the law of diminishing returns. let's look at our playing personnel:

Alisson - hardly likely to go off the boil as a 28/ 29 yo keeper

Trent - aged 22 and since we won the title, Neco Williams has emerged as a deputy should we need

VVD - from his performances so far (albeit only a few) there is nothing I can see to suggest that he is anything other than the best CB in the world

Gomez/ Matip/ Konate - we had Gomez and Matip during 19/ 20. No news on Gomez but Matip looks back to his best and Konate looked good in pre-season and has played in one of Europe's top leagues.

Robbo/ Tsimikas - Hasn't looked his best but was coming off an injury. A massive improvement in this position since 19/ 20 in that we have Tsimikas who looks very good so we're able to rotate more if required.

Hendo - coming back from injury, but I don't see any let up in either form or leadership

Fabs - he has suffered a personal shock so I forgive him his latest performance. But in earlier games (incl pre-season) I can't see him being any worse than when we won the league?

Thiago/ Elliot/ Naby/ Milner - Milner is older and therefore probably won't contribute as much as in 19/ 20. However, Thiago is a new addition since we won the league and a quality one, Naby seems to have finally found a run of fitness and Elliot is a revelation. We have lost Gini, but we have gained Thiago and Elliot (Naby was there in 19/ 20 albeit injured for much of it)

Salah - his form doesn't seem to dip like normal players, at least not for more than one game at a time! As strong as 19/ 20

Firmino - he's the one that looks well short of 19/ 20 form, and is now injured. However in 19/ 20 we didn't have Jota - we do now.

Mane - not at 19/ 20 level but has not slipped as far as Bobby has. Again we have Jota, and possibly Ox who could help here.

So, I'm not saying we're definitely going to walk the league, but I honestly can't see where the drop off is going to occur, other than possibly up front with both Bobby and Mane not quite at 19/ 20 levels (so far) and only Jota brought in. The rest of the positions are, if anything, stronger than in 19/ 20.

Having said all of that, another attacker (realistically we're not going to sign 2 first team ready players in the next few hours) would certainly provide reassurance for our front positions.

31 Aug 2021 14:07:22
John, we sold Lovren and didn’t replace him. Then didn’t act on the catastrophe we were in until the end of the transfer window in January by which time we were out of the title race. Those other teams wouldn’t have gone into the season having sold one of their senior centre backs and not brought in a replacement. And they’d definitely have acted quicker in bringing in a replacement in the next transfer window.

31 Aug 2021 14:17:21
Not read all the comments but I couldn't agree more with your post stone. Spot on mate.

31 Aug 2021 14:19:05
Teams know how we set up now. We play the one way so it's easy to defend against. We'll see lots of draws at anfield this season. We couldn't beat a 10 man chealsea who were there for the taking.

31 Aug 2021 14:46:26
What Stone and Zedd said 👏

LFC2021, Chelsea are one of the best defences in the league and playing against 10 is not necessarily that much easier to score against than 11. I agree we lack a Giroud type option at the end of matches when pushing for a win and bombarding the box, but reality is it’s more of an anomaly to be facing such a top side in such a defensive mindset due to the sending off. The current squad will I’m sure do their homework and improve on those sort of situations as they get deeper in the season.

31 Aug 2021 15:06:45
The blind loyalty to our owners is baffling. They've done nothing to improve our team.

31 Aug 2021 15:27:01
"This relentless attack on our owners is baffling. They've done nothing but improve our team"

31 Aug 2021 15:28:41
Rudder do you not remember when our strike force consisted of Balotelli, Lambert and Borini? Or our perhaps you preferred our defence of Mignolet, Glen Johnson or Alberto Moreno? Your post is laughable considering the acquisitions under FSGs watch of of Mane, Salah, VVD, Alisson, Fabinho etc. not to mention bringing in Jurgem Kloof.

Make no mistake they are still professional investors, so they should be viewed as such, but that’s true of pretty much every owner of a major football club these days. IMO they still deserve to be respected for the balanced and sensible approach they’ve taken to improve the club over the last 7-8 years.

31 Aug 2021 16:01:38
Wow just wow see you in May I hope you don't complain sure we have a great squad. 🙄🙄.

31 Aug 2021 16:03:26
SG, mate, I had to laugh at "Jurgem Kloof"! I immediately went to check how close the "f" and "p" keys are on the keyboard - not close :D!

I'll let you off "Jurgem" ("m" and "n" right next to each other) but "Kloof" is inexcusable!

31 Aug 2021 16:38:00
Haha Zedd, it was a spelling mistake on Jurgen, but Kloof was an autocorrect, must have used it a few times in the past as grew up in Africa. Made me laugh though reading it back 😂.

31 Aug 2021 16:43:27
Rudder. you are unbelievable. All you so is slag the owners and the team. Supporters like you don't deserve any success. You are a disgrace to the word supporter. Give us all a break and stop the whining. Boring.

31 Aug 2021 18:33:48
Rudder called me an FSG fanboy cos I disagreed with the very same points he is making now so in essence, you are an FSG stooge just cos you have faith in the team and the manager and he doesn’t. Pretty sure he is deep down rooting for us to fail just so he can say I Told You So.

Or he really wants us to win the title BUT is so scared of us not winning the league hence, he is hoping for the worst while at the same time, hoping for the best. Only time will tell.

31 Aug 2021 19:05:19
Maybe Rudder is Waro Oli. both deluded.
