Is the current squad better than the one that won the Champs League and the Prem? Only major change is no Gini. I think this squad is at least as good as, if not better IMO. More experienced with some quality fresh blood in it. We have as good a chance as anyone to win the league again.
We now have Jota/ Thiago/ Elliot and Konate (unproven I know), all good enough to win the league with.
YNWA.

Agree10 Disagree0

Dont forget Timmy a top left back. It will keep Robbo fresh and he is a very welcome addition to the squad.

01 Sep 2021 15:56:02
It is objectively much better but the Ultimate Team babies simply cannot look beyond the big flashing dollar signs and Jim White’s yellow deadline day tie.

Compared to the squad that started our title winning season, players we now have settled in and part of the squad include:

Kelleher
Williams
Konate
Phillips
Tsimikas
Jones
Thiago
Elliott
Jota

That’s 9 new players, all of whom go a long way towards improving and fixing major holes in our squad. You could even throw Minamino in there too but i’m just not sure Klopp will ever really trust him enough to be considered a dependable squad member. With a bit of luck maybe even Gordon will be considered a solid part of that group before long.

If we’d brought them all in this summer at a considerable cost then i bet all the doomers would be chuffed. Alright we’d all have liked an extra forward and midfielder but if the right targets aren’t within our reach right now then it’s better to wait and give the youngsters a go, rather than bring in Traore and Sanches just because their clubs were willing to accept staggered payments. Objectivity and rationality are powerless in the face of social media hysteria.

01 Sep 2021 16:01:42
It’s about the same. Question is have our rivals improved?

{Ed0666's Note - I’d say chelsea improved.

01 Sep 2021 16:04:18
In itself, I think the team is as good as it was, if not better. The more relevant question is whether the team can play better than everyone else (on average) and if the others in the league will play poorer than us (on average) . It's saying the obvious, but needed to be said.

01 Sep 2021 16:05:19
I think Gini’s role is underestimated as he sacrificed his natural attacking game to be a water carrier, he was almost always a 7/ 10 performer and almost always available, that kind of player is hugely important in Klopp’s system. Someone else has to step up now and fill that role.

{Ed0666's Note - we have Jones, Milner, Hendo, Keita to do one mans work surely they are capable?

01 Sep 2021 16:10:50
I agree that our squad is very strong. What we have going against due to not upgrading our squad is:

1. It may be harder to win now against Chlesea, Utd and City. Chelsea have already denied 2 points to us.

2. The other big 3 are better equipped at picking points against mid and low table teams than they were in 19/ 20.

3. Opponents are more familiar with our weaknesses now.

I still think we have a good chance of finishing 1st. But it would be much harder to do now than it was before.

{Ed0666's Note - mate there’s always the January window to look forward to?

01 Sep 2021 16:13:01
Sanch and varane definitely improve utd, their problem areas for them for some time now.

{Ed025's Note - but they dont have a DM port, and would have been better with someone like declan rice for me mate..

01 Sep 2021 16:14:12
OP, I fully agree with you. The squad that won the lot were nowhere near this current one. Jelle her went from academy graduate to first 11 option at GL. We had Milly covering LB now we have the Greek Freak as a starter next to Robbo. We let Gini go BUT replaced him with Jones, Elliott and of course, Thiago who gives us the creativity we needed. Konate and Phillips at CB and let Lovren go. And we added Taki and Jota to the attack. That’s a lot of players that have come in for a club that has stood still after we win the lot. Never knew you could stand still and run at the same time.

01 Sep 2021 16:15:45
Thats my position. We have enough to get till Jan, then we reassess.
Hopefully FSG buy Klopp something he wants for Christmas.

{Ed0666's Note - I see that as the most viable scenario

01 Sep 2021 16:20:15
Chelsea have certainly improved. Was relieved they didn't get a centre back.

01 Sep 2021 16:26:58
Agreed Rome I think they probably needed one, and as mentioned Man U need a DM.

01 Sep 2021 16:27:53
Most teams outside the top 4 have improved too.

01 Sep 2021 17:44:07
Both United and Chelsea have caught us. Mane and Bobby are not as good. Midway through that season Athletico Madrid figured us out. It’s not the same now as 2019-2021. We won’t be 33 points ahead of those clubs. We’ve aged, stood still and got stale/ burned out. The same players cannot keep going and going. Sir Bob wouldn’t be sat on the same squad.

{Ed014's Note - Jesus the shit on here over the last few days has been unreal.

No offence mate but ffs!

Fans on the other pages must be literally pissing themselves laughing at you.

01 Sep 2021 18:13:09
The excuse in the January window will be players are too expensive and no team wants to sell in January. That's the usual spin.

01 Sep 2021 18:14:42
Why oh why do we have to persist w teams have figured us out? Do you REALLY think it takes other coaches, players, etc. 2-3 years to say "ooooohhh. I get it now! " It's ridiculous. Klopp said as much. We had to play differently last season. Already we are seeing long diagonal balls from Virgil that we missed, more balls coming through the middle and also Matip adds a dimension to our attack.

01 Sep 2021 18:37:31
I really fell your pain Ed's because it is really getting ridiculous now lad's.

{Ed014's Note - it is mate, you are in with such a good shout of winning the big ones again this season and the whinging is unreal.

Tell you what, we’ll swap squads and give them something real to moan about! 😂😂

01 Sep 2021 19:25:49
Sir Bob never had to manage the club through a C.V. with no money. Doubt he ever had to cope with playing in empty stadiums or having all of his centre backs injured for a whole season either, particularly seeing as transfer windows didn’t exist back then and you could just buy people whenever you wanted.

‘Athletico Madrid figured us out’ firstly i can’t listen to anyone that still thinks it’s pronounced ‘Athletico’ and secondly you do realise we just lost a Champions League tie right? Like that’s it? Only one team can win it and great teams get knocked out of the Champions League all the time. Has every single team that's ever been eliminated from the competition been ‘figured out’ as a result and then fallen to bits?

Have City now been ‘figured out’ and rendered redundant because Chelsea have beat them 3 times in a row? We didn’t lose to Chelsea. We also happen to have two actually very good centre forwards, unlike City. Does the same logic not apply to them because Daddy Mansour bought them shiny new toys?

Fgs man I think i speak for everyone when i say i’m losing the will to live here.

{Ed014's Note - I think myself, Ed01, ed25 and ed666 are all broken after editing on here for the last few days.

01 Sep 2021 19:26:15
It's hard to read some of these comments. agree with Ed025, think united missed what they needed. a dm because they have a Fred sized hole! Anyone would think we were an awful team with no promising youngsters. space has to be created, it was always about contracts this summer. that's where the resources were spent (and debts, stadium, ground! ) . if u are going to saddle the club with more debts just to have some shiny new toys and jeapordise our longer term future is that how you want our club run (again)? No thanks. increased sustainability and if it means only one major transfer so be it. I'm sure the owners will back Klopp in future when he needs to.

01 Sep 2021 20:08:55
I put a post up yesterday, used to love the banter on here on deadline day - all the silly rumours about seeing Messi at Lime Street station etc….

Was quite depressing reading some of the trash over the last few days.

{Ed025's Note - yeah drogie, i loved riquelme at john lennon airport.. :)

01 Sep 2021 20:27:17
I don't know about fans on other pages p. ing themselves laughing at him, I certainly am!

01 Sep 2021 20:21:59
Ed14, I could literally feel the pain on your words as I read them. You’re prolly right. Other fans are prolly laughing at us right now with the absolute strop throwing and petulance being displayed on this forum for the past few days. As an Arsenal fan, I’m sure you must be livid.

AW, I no longer respond to the “we have been figured out” rubbish anymore cos it is not worth explaining anymore. It is nothing but a trope that was made up out of whole cloth by the media years ago and many fans bought it. Teams lose games. It’s football.

As for FSG, people have forgotten where they found us. We were dead broke like Barcelona are now and I’ll be damned if anyone would suggest we do anything that could lead us down that path again like get us into debt by fulfilling a splurge of fans who only care about themselves and their shiny new toys I. e transfers.

01 Sep 2021 20:25:52
Haha, forgot the John Lenon airport rumours mate 😂.

{Ed025's Note - ahh the good old days drogie..

01 Sep 2021 20:55:43
Why is everybody so disappointed, we wished for so many players over the years. When Alonso went we were delighted we got aqualani. Last year we didn't werner and we nearly had meltdown here, how did that work out. I'm watching the pool since the 70s and have seem the ups and down of our team, this is the most exciting team I have seen in a long time. There us a lot going on in the world at the moment so football is a great distraction, just sit back and watch the ride.

01 Sep 2021 17:40:07
Ed0666, my views are these.

Jones - though a promising young player, he does have a tendency to hold on to the ball too long and his decision making isn’t quite there yet (Wijnaldum was an experienced international player when he joined and sacrificed his own natural game to fit in with what Klopp wanted) . There is definitely a good player there though as he’s got quick feet, he’s physically a big strong player and he can pick a pass. I think MK suggested he could fill in for Firmino in that false nine role, I think that’s a great shout.

Milner - hasn’t got the legs any more, he is looking his 36 years now and is only an occasional use or sub player. He looked like he was struggling against Norwich.

Hendo - love him to bits but he’s prone to injury so isn’t the bullet proof player that Wijnaldum was and he’s also the only cover we have for the number 6 role when Fabinho isn’t available.

Keita - normally breaks down after 3 or 4 consecutive games and doesn’t seem to want to do the dirty work. Though he had a good game against Burnley, that has to be said.

Ox - can’t fault his willingness, hard work ethic or dedication. Just a shame he is made out of crisps, otherwise he’s almost the perfect replacement.

Also it seems unfair to turn a genuinely gifted player like Elliott into a water carrier.

{Ed0666's Note - we’re doomed we’re doomed. Even if 2 of the midfielders you critique step up well be ok mate. Hendo I have no qualms about but can you imagine Ox & Naby playing to their potential and we have zero worries. All we have is hope which springs eternal. Let’s not carry out the post mortem before the death hey?

01 Sep 2021 23:07:59
Athletico 'figured us out' Comment is back again. If anything the home game was one of most dominant one sided displays I had seen in Europe against an Elite team. So much so that Diego Simeone even said at the press conference that they were lucky! It was a mistake that cost us the tie; and missed chances. Not because Atletico figured us out for !

02 Sep 2021 00:05:33
We've got such a talented squad of players - why do folks obsessively go on and on about negatives they think are there?
Is it a generational thing, is it seen to be cool or something to do nothing but pick fault with a squad that in the last 2 years has won everything worth winning?
What kind of mentality causes people to look for the downside in eveything? Where's the joy in supporting the club?
I really don't get it.

02 Sep 2021 00:29:14
I would guess that a lot of posters might say that Hendo, Salah, Mane, Milner, Firmino are older since those days of winning the PL and CL. Its not an unfair observation but they certainly aren't ancient either. Keeping them fit is most important.

02 Sep 2021 03:03:32
Our squad is absolutely top drawer and capable of challenging, so agree that I don't see what all the whinging is about. I too would loved to have a signing like Saul or maybe another CF like Lukaku, but we built our squad in a similar way a few years ago to win the PL and CL and we just didn't have the same problems that needed fixing as some of the other teams.

In terms of who's had a brilliant window, it's hard to look past Chelsea. They proved their defence is going to be huge for them this year, and with Lukaku in there and creativity from the likes of Mount etc., I think they're very dangerous

Utd I agree has strengthen, but also completely agree with Ed they have a giant sized hole at DM that will likely scupper them (not to mention Ole's tactics)

Man City always dangerous but I think they can be got at with the lack of a CF, so not a slam dunk to win it this year

I think it's going to be one of the tightest seasons ever, and our experience and togetherness as a squad could well be critical. Everyone's going to drop some points this year.
