Ed001 see Neville and Carragher arguing who's the best player ever Ronaldo or Messi. Both great players but I don't see them as nowhere near the best players ever I would have loved to see there goal record in Italy in the 80s and 90s Maradona in this day and age would have been unstoppable Pele was before my time but 3 world cups and he got kicked out of the only one he did not win and maybe if he hadn't England might not have 1. In my time it has to be Maradona and for the World Cup 98 the the euro 2000 Zidane played football like I have never seen before or since so for me both better players. Ed001 who's your choice.

{Ed001's Note - it is a tough one but neither Messi nor Ronaldo are even in the running for me. From the ones I saw during my time, it has to be Maradona.}

Agree2 Disagree0

I thought it was well known that the best player ever was Glenn Whelan?

13 Sep 2021 22:37:11
Spot on, OP and Ed. Neither even make my top 8 of the ones I have seen.

13 Sep 2021 22:47:52
I couldn't agree more SR👍.

Peak Maradona was a couple of years before my time but I loved watching Ronaldinho at Barcelona, for a couple of years he was just a joy to watch.

13 Sep 2021 23:13:45
Pele, Maradonna, Cruyff, Beckenbauer are the best footballers I've seen personally.

13 Sep 2021 23:37:13
You can really name 8 better players than Messi?

13 Sep 2021 23:46:46
Gary Neville at it again, the most biased pundit going.

It's really hard to compare players from very different eras. The old pitches were often awful and players such as Pele and Maradona regularly had the crap kicked out of them.
But, players like Messi are playing in an era where the general standard of the opposition is fitter, faster and more professional IMO.
I'm old enough to have watched the Liverpool side of the 70's in the flesh but have never watched an international game or travelled to Europe to see the top players perform so my analysis comes from what I've watched on screen the same as most others.
For me, Messi is in the top 3 along with Maradona and Pele, but I couldn't put them in any particular order.

Zidane. Cue the kicking.

Best player I have ever seen live was the Belfast Boy.

Best player I’m my lifetime was Pele, sublime footballer, supreme athlete and tough as nails - played in the days when the game was physical and never shirked anything.

For me, Pele, Best, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Baresi and Gerd Muller although with the exception of the first two it might look different tomorrow.

{Ed001's Note - how old are you???}

14 Sep 2021 06:14:24
The biggest thing Ronaldo and Messi have on their side is longevity. Whether you rate them or hate them both have been at world class or elite level for a far more sustained time than any of other players that could be named as challengers.
You can’t argue with the players named above though with regards to how good they were in their peak it’s such a shame that a few of them for one reason or another only hit peak for a few years over a career.

{Ed001's Note - not having to face career-threatening challenges on a regular basis must have contributed to that longevity, so we should probably be glad of the rule changes to protect flair players for that.}

Ed001 great shout that mate. Football over the decades has definitely moved on and not just those career ending challenges. Think how far medical science, nutrition, strength and conditioning programmes etc have changed also. Plus not drinking 15 pints after a game couple of times a week must help.

{Ed001's Note - agreed, just a shame the likes of Best, Pele and Maradona didn't have those advantages too, plus the better pitches to showcase their skills. Though Stanley Matthews did and he carried on into his 50s, he was obsessive over his conditioning and training.}

There's only one George BEST! For that brief period in his career, he was the man, absolutely unplayable. They tried it all to stop but couldn't. I appreciate he didn't have a full career such as Pele but when that great man comes out and says Bestie was the best player he had ever seen, well that will do for me and what a surname too! Sure it was written in the stars.

14 Sep 2021 09:49:09
I’d have to go with Maradona. Just mind boggling watching him!

14 Sep 2021 09:59:45
Maradona was special, a player like that I don't think we'll ever see again but never say never I suppose. My favourite is Cruyff personally.

14 Sep 2021 10:36:37
It’s only ever attacking players that are mentioned when the discussion is who is the best player ever, never goalies or defenders for some reason.
There are some truly special players around in this generation including ronaldo and Messi but you never see VVD mentioned, who is the best defender of this generation and has got to be in the discussion for best defender ever?
Having said all that, it’s got to be maradona for me.

14 Sep 2021 10:43:46
Some amazing players have been before us but u can’t say Ronaldo and messi aren’t well up there! Their goal rate and stats are unreal! Ronaldo has done it in every league he’s been in so does he edge messi? It’s a hard one!
Are they better then maradonna pele etc? Hard to ever say all different playing times pitches tackles balls and so on!
Could be a long time before we see greats like these again!
And I couldn’t give a toss what rat boy and spit have to say both clowns!

Ed01, I was born in 1955. First match was apparently in 160 but can’t really remember it as I wasn’t quite 5. Went to nearly all home games and @ 50 - 60% of away games from late 1960s until 1988 when I moved away overseas. Was back in the UK from 93 to 96 and got to a few games but moved out to Australia in 99 and these days mostly watch through Optus, LFC TV and streaming.

{Ed001's Note - not old enough to witness the Liddellpool era then, but only a couple of hundred years younger than Ed025!}

14 Sep 2021 12:57:10
And 160 was 1960 of course.

14 Sep 2021 12:50:23
Just a bit before my time - I may have seen him play but if I did I can’t remember him. Was a couple of years later when I start remembering games.

{Ed001's Note - shame that, my grandad always said he was the best to ever wear a Liverpool shirt.}
