Revisiting an old discussion bit after last night's ridiculous display have to raise again - so who is the better prospect, Jones or Foden? 🤔.

{Ed001's Note - I stand by what I said originally, Jones is a far better player than people were giving him credit for.}

Agree1 Disagree0

29 Sep 2021 08:00:27
I (obviously) agree.
The thought of Jones and a fit Elliott in midfield for the long future is exciting!

29 Sep 2021 08:00:52
Jones is a class act I really don't know what the lad has to do to get people off his back. Is it because he's not dribbling past half of the opposition or spraying 50yrd passes or maybe rifling in 35yrd screamers into the top corner🤷‍♂️The lad is class just watch.

29 Sep 2021 08:01:13
I remember back in the summer there were clowns on here saying he wouldn't make it, wasn't up to scratch, only passed side to side and needed replacing.
I wonder if any of them eveb bothered to watch Jones rip Porto a new one last night.

29 Sep 2021 08:21:51
I've always said Jones and my reasoning is simple. Foden is marginally better in the final third, but he is totally useless in midfield because he is weak and lazy. An absolute passenger who has to be carried out of possession. Jones will win the ball back himself and then go on and do things Foden can as well. It's never been a doubt in my mind Jones was the more complete player. Foden just made a bigger bang earlier in his career. I know people laughed it off when i said we could have a midfield with Jones and Elliott but i genuinely do believe by the end of next season they will both be un-droppable.

29 Sep 2021 08:34:04
Top player! Lot of people were happy to take £15m for him in the summer. Pure shortsighted, him and Elliott will take over from our "aging midfield"for the next 10 years. Imagine if a Bellingham could be added to them two, frightening that'd be.

29 Sep 2021 08:36:41
I love Jones, really happy nothing silly happened like him leaving based on the few rumours during the summer. Foden also looks a superb prospect, City will be delighted with him and we can be delighted with Jones.

29 Sep 2021 08:43:52
Reminds of me saying around 8 years ago that Henderson was a far better player than Jack Wiltshire and being laughed at by the entire room.
Now seems obvious but was somehow controversial then.

29 Sep 2021 09:27:20
Always loved Jones and really feel like he will go onto great things. Villa are no mugs and wanted to steal him off us and Im glad we didn't take the money as he will be worth treble that in a few years. He can move the ball quickly like Gini but in my view he will score more goals and if we can get him and Elliott chipping in with a few goals the future looks bright.

{Ed001's Note - in a few years? He already is worth treble.}

29 Sep 2021 09:42:26
CJ will be a far better player than Gini just watch lad's.

29 Sep 2021 09:45:06
Jurgenator - exact same thing happened with me. Watching Arsenal LFC years ago with my footie team and I said Hendo is a better player, go absolute stick for it!

29 Sep 2021 09:58:24
I wouldn't say he's one for the future either. He's one for right now.

29 Sep 2021 10:35:50
Thing is that he’s 20 and looks like he has the capability to keep learning and improving. Like I said in a thread on here last week - wait until 2024 (say) Jones on the left (aged 23), Elliot in the middle (aged 20 / 21) and Gordon on the right (aged 19 / 20) with potentially Morton and Clark rotating or on the bench.

Ed02 has been keen to point out for a few years that we needed to get our youth policy sorted out and, more recently that JK has been told by the owners to make better use of the squad - looks like there is a fair bit to be optimistic about.

That said, can’t wait for the MOTD fever inspired frenzy ….

29 Sep 2021 10:36:47
Sorry hit enter too quickly - the frenzy being the January transfer window.

29 Sep 2021 10:51:11
Klopp himself remarked on Jones’ improved all-round performance at Brentford and added that he needed to continue at / above that level.
There was an implication, I felt, that Jones had not done so up to that point?
However that display last night was by far his best in a Liverpool shirt, and by a long chalk.
He had to step up this season and it happily looks like he has done so.
Obviously consistency is his next challenge, I think he’ll start on Sunday too.
Just no injuries please.

29 Sep 2021 10:52:02
There’s not many 20 year olds playing minutes in the premier league let alone getting those minutes for one of the big 4 title challengers. That should show how good he is and how he’s rated by one of the best managers in the world. Not sure why we have to use his performance last night to compare him to another teams player and use it as a stick to beat him. We can surely just say Jones was outstanding without having to bring rival or other payers into it.

29 Sep 2021 11:10:34
Jurgenator I've a mate thought Wishere was great, got him to write and sign a note on a beer mat saying he'd win a Balon d'or by 2019 or sthg or he would eat the beer mat, can't remember the year he put on it but I found it then last year clearing out a drawer and posted it to him either a couple of pkts of salt lol, too funny.

29 Sep 2021 11:29:24
Bill, posting it to hom is not as good as insisting he would eat it as I would have! 😀
JK23 - My point was a bit different as Foden has been in the forefront as the new generational "darling" while Jones fairly anonymous in the limelight. He will prove to be the better stock - of that I have no doubt.

29 Sep 2021 11:33:38
"Hey Jurgen, c'mere for a sec! Now i know you've won the Premier League and made us European and World champions but me and the rest of the FSG lads all agree that its about time u really started getting more outa that squad". my God!

29 Sep 2021 11:39:18
I think both foden and Jones are special players, I said earlier this season Jones is class and should start more. The debate about who is better is a non starter as they perform equally as good for their clubs, but I think the main difference is Klopp trust Jones to play CM, Foden is not trusted by his manager at club or England.

29 Sep 2021 12:11:43
He played really well last night, played well against Brentford too. I liked the fact he got stuck in as well as piling forward to add an extra man in attack. He absolutely deserves a start against City.

29 Sep 2021 12:12:06
@Jadon,

The owner’s desire to promote through the youth and academy into the senior squad seems to have won approval as far as our fans go - it would seem that Elliot is now in the untouchables and the silent majority in the recent transfer window have turned up this week to get behind Curtis.

The thing is, developing youngsters into the finished article is what clubs used to do on a regular basis, rather than rush out and by three full backs or midfielders when one of our players had a calf or groin sprain.

I don’t think the owners were either unaware that we had won the Champions League or the PL or of JKs ability, they were just exercising a common sense approach to developing our assets, particularly ar a time when finances are tight.

29 Sep 2021 12:17:42
With all the praise going Curtis's way (and rightly so, that was quite a performance last night), let me play Devil's Advocate a bit. Around two weeks ago, I clearly remember watching Ian Wright say during some pre-game talk, that Jones was not getting game time since the start of the season because of perceived excessive attitude and "swagger" by Klopp. I don't know what Wright based his opinion on (but I do like Wright usually, because he talks more sense than the others) . What do the rest of you think? (I like it being contrarian, now I know how it feels when the others whine and nitpick after a massive win like last night 😁)

{Ed001's Note - it is not true, he was concussed. Ian Wright has no idea what he is talking about and is a terrible pundit. Lovely guy but no real insight into the game.}

29 Sep 2021 12:27:17
Okay, Ed001 😁, I guessed I've been impressed with the "lovely guy" persona.

{Ed001's Note - I do like Wright, he is a very likeable man, but he is not the brightest bulb in the box.}

29 Sep 2021 16:27:28
Jurgenator sorry mate my post wasn’t aimed as a dig at you. For me I just think If the shoe was on the other foot and other fans were comparing their players to ours after a stand out performance we would be giving it we’re living rent free in their heads.

It could literally only take Foden to have a stormer on Sunday and it’ll be a case of this post aged well that’s all mate.

29 Sep 2021 18:40:45
I don’t think there’s actually a comparison there to be made as they’re different types of midfielder and in different lanes. Other than being English I don’t see a comparison with Foden as Foden is more of a number 10 than a number 8.

For me Curtis is developing very nicely into a very good box to box midfielder, he can tackle, press and do the defensive work as well as being able to create and score.

It’s actually nice to see a midfielder who isn’t afraid to get forward and assist as well as have a dig, so that seems an upgrade on Wijnaldum. I’m a convert now, from doubter to believer. If he doesn’t start against City that would be criminal.

{Ed014's Note - I’ve been very impressed with him, you’ve got a great player in the making in Jones.

29 Sep 2021 21:35:44
I think you’re absolutely right Ed. He’s really beginning to show that too.

{Ed014's Note - 100% mate, he’s a joy to watch, does it all.

30 Sep 2021 09:30:27
The amount of Slander CJ got form many on here (and they know who they are) is something that I will never, ever understand esp. for a young player who more than held his own last season in a team that was ravaged by injuries and struggled last season. The kid is a gem and his ability and potential is there for all to see BUT the slander merchants would rather go after him and make up lies about how he is low on the pecking order whereas there is NO evidence to prove that since Klopp is constantly rotating the midfield. Jones is mint just like Elliott and should be supported esp. as a young player and same for all the young players trying to make it at LFC. I would ask the slander merchants to do the same thing BUT I know they won't.

30 Sep 2021 12:00:51
I'd hate for us to have lost Curtis Jones.
"Ooh miss Jones", I would.

30 Sep 2021 21:41:49
Jones is good with potential to get better but, sorry, he’s not in Foden’s class. Hopefully Foden won’t prove my point on Sunday.
