Morning eds,
Disappointing result but some massive over reactions. We are 3 points behind Chelsea we are top and 2 ahead of city with more than 2/ 3 of the season to go.
What's everyone's thoughts on a formation change?
I feel the formation we have played last few seasons was perfect but I don't feel hendo now has the legs for it, think injuries have taken their toll and with age he has lost a yard or two so struggles to link with salah and cover Trent on the right. I also feel outside of Milner we don't have someone like that for the left hand side where wijnaldum played. I think Thiago is more suited to a creative role or deep lying playmaker, Jones doesn't seem to quite get the role yet and either stays to high or too deep and ox and Keita just aren't consisting delivering. Lack of balance from those two positions means whoever plays deep where fabinho is being over run trying to cover the cover, left and right when other teams break.
Would it be worth looking to two players sitting, or even three at the back as we do have five decent options there anyway? We have been too open lately, even united where we hammered them, they still had chance to open us up in the first 60 minutes.

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh and our result was a point up on what we got last season in the same fixture we only need marginal gains not perfection.

A draw against Brighton and all of a sudden the players aren't good enough and we need a change of formation.
After mentioning people's overreactions.
Quality stuff.

If you read my post I have said it isn’t a reaction to the game. I haven’t posted but have been speaking to people at work around it for a while. Before the international break hendo had looked pretty poor I thought and some of the games since haven’t tested us. Watford for terrible, athletico walked through us when they went forward and Alison saved us a few times as well as them getting a red and united played completely the wrong tactics but to be fair still had a chance or two during the game and could have scored. Follow that up witj conceding three against Brentford and losing the lead to ac milan and City. We haven’t looked particularly defensively stable all season of my opinion.

31 Oct 2021 09:08:27
And in addition I haven’t said all the players aren’t good enough, I think Jones, Thiago and Henderson and fabinho are quality but don’t feel like this formation plays to their strengths. Keita and ox I stand by saying they aren’t really the consistent quality we desire I have said it for two years.

In fairness why can’t Alex debate about a formation change? Anything that is debated on here has zero effect on what then happens at the club unless Klopp sits there waiting for the next golden nugget of advice to come from user 2,005.

Far too many Karen’s on here who seem to enjoy comparing about complainers. I can imagine every other post is can I speak to the manager please.

31 Oct 2021 09:41:34
A formation change to what though?
The starting formation is often tweaked mid-game, depending on how the game is going.
Other than that, you’d be looking at something radical like 3 centre backs and the five man defence out of possession.
We’ve got the players but the day Klopp uses that is the day hell freezes over I think.
I don’t blame him either, it’s dreadful to watch.
Please Lord, Chelsea don’t win the league with it this season.
An oligarchy with a 7 man defence? Please.

31 Oct 2021 09:51:52
Juicer agree mate. Klopp seems to really trust the 433 formation. I honestly expected him to use the 4 forwards a lot more this season but with the impact Bobby has had off the bench and the goals from the 3 who have started why would he change it. If we lose anymore midfielders then a formation change might be forced.

On a separate note I never watch Brighton and to all the people with Motd fever who have mentioned Bissouma i can now see why. The guy looked very good and almost looked like he was performing like he was in the shop window.

Apologies to any of those I have upset about talking in hindsight about a game that happened yesterday and mentioning a transfer.

31 Oct 2021 09:55:58
The Juicer

When a holding midfielder drops in between the center backs it automatically becomes a 3 center backs system something we should have done yesterday to contain Brighton. Henderson played like a B2B midfielder in the deeper role.

31 Oct 2021 09:46:42
Nailed it JK23. You can't debate anything when we lose and then ahgain debate nothing when we win coz we won.

31 Oct 2021 10:06:36
Klopp is manna from Heaven.
Even when we play poorly it’s a good open game to watch.
We are absolutely blessed to have him.

31 Oct 2021 10:20:39
I’m not a massive admirer of a back 3 but I do feel defensively we need something, even if it I just the tactical tweak of having 2 sitting deep one to cover the full back depending where the ball is and one to sit, as at the moment if one full back is caught the fabinho role player is pulled out or the centr back is and the midfielder drops and we are leaving a huge hole in front of the defence for a player to pick up in space and drive as our defence.

31 Oct 2021 10:29:08
Theoretically, you don't need it Alex as Robbo isn't any attacking fullback anymore. Him. VVD, Konate could form a back three to push Trent high up.
The issue is we can't let drop off from the press. we are not blessed with technical midfielders in the absence of Thiago to control the tempo of the match.
we have to press high up and dominate the ball or we are in trouble. there is no press-resistant midfielder at the club.
Henderson is average at best in controlling the match whole OX is a sprinter and Jones wants to emulate Foden and Mount. so we are through in the middle.

31 Oct 2021 11:10:24
We should go 3 at the back we have 4 good centre backs. World let Robertson (Tsimikas for me) and Trent have less defensive duties too. 2 in midfield ideally Fabinho and Thiago then 3 up top. Look how good Chelsea have been since using it. Even Ole got United looking good with it. I do think Klopp is too stubborn to use it though.

31 Oct 2021 11:32:49
The possibility of us underperforming will always happen when our starters are injured. Fabinho, Thiago and Keita (who seems to be improving) were not there. Has everyone forgotten last year when our CB group was wiped out with injuries? And when you have a supporting cast of Ox and Jones who are clearly one level below the starters, you will get results as we did yesterday. I don't see how a formation change could have changed anything; it was the personnel being used and we had no choice in that.

We have a midfield corps of Milner, Hendo, Thiago and Keita that seem to take time to recover whenever there's a knock or even a small injury, for whatever reasons. It's the way it is. You can't foresee any of this. I do agree that a midfielder should have been brought to either backup Fabinho as DM or add to the CMs we have. But that is a function of right price and finances being available and other reasons. You do the best you can with what you have.

31 Oct 2021 11:37:31
It was a good game Juicer I agree. We just didn’t turn up in the second half. Brighton were very good.

31 Oct 2021 12:25:16
We might be forced into a 5-0-5 formation if these midfielders keep dropping 😂.

31 Oct 2021 13:04:23
mate these dropped points validate the point of those who think our squad is no good. that's why they are out in force.

31 Oct 2021 14:06:24
I don’t think anyone thinks the squad is no good. Some inc me just think we are one short. Our best games are when we have legs in midfield and in a number of games we haven’t had it and points have been lost.

31 Oct 2021 14:52:42
I think we have a good squad and a great starting 11 when full strength. You can’t always move forward and improve but the aim should be too at least try. And for me getting our squad from good to great is moving forward.

It wasn’t long ago it was said we shouldn’t sign another forward as they would hardly play and look how Jota has proved that theory wrong. Same was said last summer when a new centre back was mentioned.

We couldn’t get a better keeper, centre half (VVD), full backs and wide forwards but we can’t kid ourselves and say we couldn’t improve on some of the squad players.

That’s not me saying they are no good because to be a pro footballer you have to be at a level. But you only have to look at the minutes Klopp has given them in the league this season to see that Klopp doesn’t believe they are capable of putting a consistent contribution to the team.

But as Aray perfectly summed up Earlier there’s lots of moving factors to transfers and as we don’t have access or understanding to the financial side of things all we can do is speculate. I love my club and I know how lucky I am to be a supporter of this great club but as fans will we ever be content. We always want more and better and for me the day I feel like I don’t will probably be the day I fall out of love with the game.

31 Oct 2021 17:08:09
Klopp has won everything worth winning for this club in the last 3 years with his favoured formation. One draw against Brighton and the tactical experts on here want it changed.
Knee jerk much guys?

31 Oct 2021 20:55:19
Imagine coming onto an open forum and wanting a dictatorship 🙄.

31 Oct 2021 20:58:22
OP, you make excellent points. IMO, Ox would be perfect to play ahead of Trent to give him cover as he is younger, faster and more athletic than Hendo is in that role. In fact, it was the role he played for us when he first arrived and we all know how great he was till that nasty injury happened. Something to definitely think about. As for having two sitting in front of the defence, that can work but will depend on the personnel available and what is happening in the game at the time.

Jezza. Spot on. In fact if you look at some of our results this season vs the same oppo compared to last season, we have gained about 7 more points or so more than we did last season. We need to improve the way we set up and stop playing these frantic, end to end style that makes us vulnerable whenever we lose the ball as that is so ‘17/ 18. We are not that team anymore.

31 Oct 2021 21:09:31
Brilliant read, ArAy1969. Also, I might add that when you go all the way down to your 7th or 8th choice in midfield cos 4/ 5 of them are injured or taking longer than expected to recover then, you are going to feel it at some point as we did and could not sustain the press as soon as Keita came off.

My only solution to that would be to keep it tight and let the other team have the ball and have them try to break us down esp with a 2 goal lead in place. That is the type of plan b I would like to see moving forward instead of continuing to go all guns blazing in attack hence, leaving us vulnerable on the counter. Just my opinion.
