Smashing review eds001 as always, I feel JK as taken the team to another level this season, they seem so much more dominant in their performances and they are now developing a ruthlessness that all winners have. There won't be many who fancy playing us now-We go again.

{Ed001's Note - thanks Chief!}

We are still a level off our title winning form. We need a run of good performances not what is happening atm. Consistency is the key now.

Agree with that Mark - thought we were ‘hitting our groove’ early / mid October but we are being hamstrung by usually not having two or three of out ‘first starters’ recently.

I think we have it in us to get there but we need a bit more luck on the injury front to enable us to build confidence and a consistent run, as you say.

If Tsimikas, Thiago and Fabinho finally get a run of games together in the side then we’ll be much improved from the period of chopping and changing we’ve experienced so far. You only have to see how much more effective the whole team was against Arsenal with that midfield. If the injuries calm down and we get some stability i think we can go on a mad run, only problem is there is no reason Chelsea or City can’t do the same. Chelsea are ominously confident at this moment in time.

AW everyone is changing their minds by the game. Tsimikas is playing well but he is still a level off a top Andy Robbo. Fabs has had as many poor as good games this season, against Chelsea and City he was dire. One game changes nothing it’s just the start. Thiago has lots to prove as well. We beat Arsenal because they are not very good. We need to build now.

Pretty sure that midfield 3 never played against Man Utd or the other outstanding results the team have had this season.

24 Nov 2021 10:00:05
Exactly Irish as soon as a player has one good game people are going ott, same as after a defeat. They both didn’t play v Man U.

We can hardly afford to drop any points before we play Chelsea in the new year. You don’t want to go to the bridge 6 points behind.

24 Nov 2021 11:12:56
To be fair Mark, Robbo is about 2-3 levels off too Robbo himself. Tsimikas has been good all season and improving by the game! Robbo not really been at the races this season.

24 Nov 2021 11:54:14
do we perhaps need to admit that our title winning year was slightly out of the ordinary? To reach for those levels as if that is the only way we can win the league is one possibility, but each season is different and I think the seasons since have been more closer to normal imo.

The glaring weakness of a midfield containing Fabinho and Thiago is their lack of recovery pace if you manage to turn them. Arsenal got a little bit of joy in the first half but none in the second, as Liverpool squeezed them up in the forward press.
I always feel that Thiago doesn’t have a natural position in our midfield, there’s no one place that you can say is truly his, as he had at Bayern?

24 Nov 2021 14:58:14
Manemino you are correct mate, but I have every faith in Robbo getting back to his best before Christmas. Faith you have a fair point of course, but we need to be a lot more consistent than we have been so far.

To elaborate further, Thiago has a tendency to operate in a rectangular area forward and behind the centre circle. This is where he drifts to and looks most at home.
It’s also Fabinho’s theatre of operations, and we can get constricted when this happens - there were signs of it in the first half when the ball was being pinged around between the pair of them but without any forward penetration.
Thiago’s presence seems to often cause a 4-2-1-3 to happen, whether this is planned or not I don’t know.
He is not comfortable at all in a wider midfield position.
That’s the issue with Thiago in a midfield 3 for Liverpool for me, the midfield takes on a certain shape which causes other players to have to adjust.

I’m sorry Mark but I don’t quite understand your point. I don’t think you’d find many people who don’t think that our strongest midfield is Thiago, Fabinho and Henderson. Nor would you find many people who would contest that Tsmikas’ form has been consistently excellent all season, whereas Robbo’s has been consistently poor, and that we’ve looked far better going forward and at the back when Tsimikas has been in the side. Fabinho has had a few bad games and, like Thiago, has struggled with injury, but i don’t know how or why anyone would argue that they both shouldn’t be starting as much as possible.

That midfield three didn’t play against United Irish, you’re right. However, it also didn’t play in the multitude of games we have lost control of this season; Brentford, City, Brighton, West Ham, you could even see it in the Champions League games we went on to win against Milan and Atletico. I think a bit of stability and composure in that position could go a long way to making sure we don’t drop anymore silly points.

Since 2018 the most assists in the premier league are

1. Trent
2. KDB
3. Andrew Robertson.

Robbo is not hitting the levels he has previously and Tsmiskas is def deserving of his chance. But please let’s not make out that the team have been faltering because of Robbo.

I really hope Robbo gets back to his best too Mark cause what an asset he is! Enjoy the game tonight lads YNWA.

I think that, on paper, our best three midfield players are Fabs, Hendo and Thiago, but I don’t think the three of them playing together is necessarily our best starting midfield. Playing the three together restricts our width, particularly on the left, and collectively we lack a bit of pace.

That said, I have to say it’s not the worst midfield we have ever fielded and, on song, they would give anybody a game.

Can’t wait to see Elliot, Jones and Keita fit for selection again - with Millie back and Ox and young Morton showing signs of form things will look a lot better.
