Ed 1 + ed 25. What your opinions on mark Lawrenson as a footballer? He was just coming to his end (bad injury) when I started supporting and watching liverpool. on the old games, in the big games that u watch back, he looked brilliant. doesn't seem to be talked about as much as other former players. Maybe overshadowed by how good Hansen was? Looks like he would suit the high line teams play nowadays, lighting quick.

{Ed001's Note - he was brilliant and could play almost any position on the pitch too.}

Agree0 Disagree0

He was fantastic, Digger. He was my favourite player for a while because I was a young defender that loved a sliding tackle and Lawro was brilliant at it.
He could play centre half, left back and in midfield. He was that good.
I'd have him at left back in my all time greatest Liverpool eleven.
Only because we haven't been that strong there and I would love to see Hansen and van Dijk together.
I don't think they'd break sweat.

Lawrenson was our record signing for a time- maybe Bob Paisley's record signing- and that says a lot for that team at that time.

I'll also add, Digger, that Kevin Keegan said that Lawrenson retired him. It was an FA Cup game on a Friday night on TV. I think Newcastle were in the old second division but on the up.
Keegan thought he had a chance, he had got behind our back four, but Lawrenson just turned and caught him.
Hansen and Lawrenson were incredible but I'd still love to see Hansen telling van Dijk what to do. Lawro at left back, Stevie Nicol at right back and send my apologies to Rob Jones.

Strong, fast and read the game brilliantly - one of the best I’ve seen live. The best CB was a little known Watford player called John mcclelland in the 80s. He was like VVD and possibly even better IMO but injuries got better of him. Any Ed’s remember him?

Loved the Robin Friday / Mark Lawrenson story when he was at Brighton.

I vaguely remember him playing a stormer for Ireland v scotland in 1987. He played midfield I think and scored a screamer of a goal.

I think I would have Alan Kennedy, over Lawro, at LB in an all-time XI.

Too many last ditch slide-tackles for Lawro for me. Great player that he was.

John McClelland, Northern Ireland International, an accomplished CB, mainly playing for Rangers then Watford, plagued with injuries after and a plethora of clubs. Played for NI in 2 World cups, scored 1 goal against Turkey?, I think. I liked him but unfortunately, as much as I would love to say it, he certainly wasn't in the same category as Lawro but I'm sure he would appreciate the compliment 1jj 🤣👍.

I wouldn't excatly call it a screamer Digger but it was the winner and he did play in midfield that night.

Watched the goal there your right Barry wasnt a screamer, I thought he beat 2 r 3 men saloming threw but it was quick free kick. it was long time ago! An awful pity he suffered the injury he did, missed out on irelands glory period and no doubt massive loss to liverpool.

Digger he also scored at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup in a 2-1 win in 86,a lovely finish it was mate.

Great player, I fully agree.
I’d say he’d be better suited to partner VVD actually than Hansen, much quicker and could play the high line with ease.
Matip is more like Hansen with those heart-stopping forward runs 😂.

Lawro was magnificent. He would have partnered any of our current centre backs and it would have worked just fine.
