Morning reds.
This season was always going to be challenge with city and Chelsea looking strong and us only getting a CB with needed a year ago.
The future really does make me worried. Our owners seem to not want to spend the money which is up to them. But with midfield built out of glass we seem to have no other option?
Can you Ed’s see us signing someone this month?

{Ed002's Note - I am not sure what money you are referring to. It is very difficult to answer questions about timing, but there is a reasonable chance if the right player is available.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed’s; I understand fsg run Liverpool in a ‘self sufficient’ manner and it’s an investment for them, not a ‘toy’, however is it unreasonable to think they may loan the club funds for a transfer, in order to protect their investment long term, the funds being more than recouped if/ when they sell a more successful club?

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool are not self-sufficient and already have significant debts, including to the owners. Money will be tight as the pandemic has taken a huge toll.}

09 Jan 2022 13:30:29
Who is the right player eds?

{Ed002's Note - One of the players Liverpool are considering for midfield - perhaps Sanches, etc. or maybe they will look to Dembele or Traore again.}

09 Jan 2022 13:32:32
I think it's always been the case that unless the right long term target became available there would be no expenditure.

That being said Bissouma, who's our first choice, is supposedly available (rather hefty £50m price however) . If the right bid for Nat Phillips comes in, and the news about Thiago is true, I could definitely see Liverpool moving to secure his signature.

Ed002 are you aware whether the current court case could have a negative impact on any deal for the player?

{Ed002's Note - Bissouma is not available.}

09 Jan 2022 14:50:12
Sanches injury record worries me. Not sure he’s the answer.

09 Jan 2022 14:59:53
Where Liverpool self sufficient pre C.V. when they recorded pre tax profits of £40 and £100+ million?

{Ed002's Note - No - they live a hand to mouth existance.}

09 Jan 2022 16:09:05
Are brighton not open to selling then Ed? into the last 18 months of his contract abd let's face it he's not going to sign another one at Brighton.

{Ed002's Note - Not right now.}

09 Jan 2022 16:46:50
Well if a club can record £160+ million over 2 seasons, while investing circa £400+ million on new players into the bargain. I doubt many Liverpool fans would be complaining.

09 Jan 2022 16:48:08
Thisago, I'm more concerned with our owners inability to spend money. Unfortunately in today's game you have to have money to compete or you take your chances every few years to make a run.

We don't have any money. This hand to mouth approach will not work long term, but it's what we have. It's frustrating how the sport has changed because of money.

I'm really afraid about the future with our aging roster and Klopp leaving in a couple of years. It looks like we will try to hold on for now with what we have and then a complete rebuild after that. I hope I'm wrong.

09 Jan 2022 17:35:42
@stone : Who is paying for the expansions to the ground and the new training facility?

The owners are investing in the club and building for the future. They have also brought in a number of players along the way.

Just because they don’t see the value in the fans latest obsession doesn’t mean they haven’t / aren’t putting money into the club.

09 Jan 2022 18:38:34
I may be wrong but i don't think they payed for the expansions of anfield. i thought they loaned us the money for the anfield expansions so we have to pay the entire sum of it back to fsg?

09 Jan 2022 18:39:51
The owners have but little money into the club, any spent has been recupted on sales or added onto club debts, they either invest or sell otherwise in the next few years we will not be competitive .

That's modern football.

How comes Liverpool appear to be one of the worst run clubs in the PL, living a hand to mouth existence, unable to buy players without breaching FFP but have such wonderful owners?
I get that they rescued us but when we are routinely getting outspent in the transfer windows (as in last two seasons) by 17 of the 19 PL teams, something is horribly wrong.
All of the teams have to deal with contract renewals, not just us, so please don’t roll out that excuse.
Or are the other teams walking a tightrope and close to going under?

{Ed002's Note - I have no idea what you are talking about - but it is clear you don't understand the situation with FFP nor with the investment the owners have been making.}

09 Jan 2022 18:23:55
That's all great and I appreciate all of that WDW, but our roster is not getting any better. There has to be a way to balance it all. They don't have the luxury in the Premier League that they have in MLB. In baseball, you can finish last and be okay, which they have done more than once. in the Premier League falling out of the top 4 is a big loss. If Liverpool are going to compete with the "hand to mouth" approach, then it's scouting and youth development have to be among the best in the world. For example, in my view Thiago was not a good investment for the future. That was a win now purchase and it has not worked out at all. I'm not saying they need to go out and buy Mbape, not at all. I'm saying they have to start buying smarter. We don't have the luxury of overselling a Coutinho for example and investing in world class ready to play talent. However, we should be investing in young up and comers. Elliott is a perfect example of that.

09 Jan 2022 20:13:38
So is Gordon who shone today. And there are one or two others who may come through yet.

09 Jan 2022 20:25:57
Ed - do you reckon FSG instruct Edwards and Co to sign injury prone players who can therefore be signed to cheaper deals.

P. s. don't answer this . . .
🤣.

09 Jan 2022 20:46:24
I don't mind getting routinely outspent in the transfer windows.
We are routinely finishing in the CL places and challenging in that competition under our current owners and manager.
Most of the clubs routinely spending more than us would love to be in our position.

09 Jan 2022 20:47:46
Watch moneyball.

09 Jan 2022 20:50:57
Hopefully when the accounts are announced soon we’ll see the money saved from the loyal club staff who were furloughed.

09 Jan 2022 20:59:08
shivers ed2, you've triggered people with your "hand to mouth" comment.

09 Jan 2022 21:16:00
good discussion everyone. cheers.

10 Jan 2022 00:42:33
That decision was overturned after the fans kicked up a fuss, JK23.
That's one of the main reasons I love this club. The likes of Ann Williams are up there with Sir Kenneth Mathieson Dalglish MBE, in my book.
Them Scousers again.

10 Jan 2022 06:08:29
Well said Rigsby.

10 Jan 2022 07:12:27
Ed002 - I’m remember your mentioning the club were close to losing close to £1m per week when FSG took over with the owners pumping money in

Drogie.

{Ed002's Note - Yes.}

10 Jan 2022 14:18:33
Well said, Rigsby and WDW. We have the owners we have and that's that. They do dumb stuff that I don't like and they need to be read the riot act BUT let's not act like they are like the Glazers cos they are NOT as much as many may like them to be.

They have an approach that worked for the most part until C. V happened. Are we blaming that on them now? Under our current model, we have been more than competitive to being literally successful since they got Klopp in. Why? Cos their model would only work under a manager like him.

Some may say, "They are NOT backing Klopp". Well, Klopp knew what the deal was and STILL accepted the job so that's not a thing and mind you, Klopp has been funded way more than he ever was at Dortmund and Mainz and has brought us success in spite of City, Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal (yeah, them) outspending him/ LFC at 2 or even 3 to 1 like City and Utd. To do that, we had to literally outperform every metric possible on and off the pitch to get where we are and with the owners we have, you're going to have a couple of lean years where you need time to rebuild, regroup and go again. We are prolly there now, based on ED02's recent info about critical decisions needing to be made players-wise so Im more worried about that than anything else.

10 Jan 2022 17:11:24
Over the last 8 transfer windows we’ve signed 9 players.
5 of those were Adrian, Elliot, Van de Berg, Kebak and Davis. Freebies, Loans and Kids.

11 Jan 2022 09:39:49
LiverpoolFC8 and out of these players you mentioned, only Davis and Van Den Berg (not for the first team) have NOT contributed in some way. The rest of them have. Also, you conveniently missed the likes of Konate, Jota, Thiago, Tsimikas who are now performing for the first team along with Kelleher in goal. Like I said, we have the owners we have and were it not for CV we would have made better signings cos that was the plan, IMO.
