Chris Wood to Newcastle for £25M at 30yrs of age average striker no better than Divock imo and Origi is valued at half that by other clubs football stumps me sometimes. I know that Newcastle have a striker crisis and had no option but to pay his release clause and with our boys away on afcon duty we are not in a position to let big Divock go but surly if Wood is valued at 25M Origi has to be somewhat similar. I'm not his biggest fan but the guy gets important goals when he does play and I'm sure if he were playing week in week out he'd get 15 premier goals a season for someone surly. Interested to know fellow posters view on big Divock and if we will sell him in the summer and of course if like me you think he's worth every much as the £25M that Newcastle have just paid Burnley for Chris Wood.

Cheers

Working out a players worth is so difficult, if you were to compare Wood and Origi then on the face of it surely you'd say Origi was a £30m player based on his age, attributes, record. But I wouldn't expect any more than half that!

Has Bobby ever scored 15 premier league goals in a season. 15 league goals is hell of a return in this day and age.

13 Jan 2022 11:47:53
Reading between the lines, it looks like they want a target man with experience of performing under premier league relegation pressure and someone who doesn't miss too many games through injury - especially given Callum Wilson's injury record.

This signing is clearly with the anticipated relegation fight in mind and that the fee was inflated by the fact that Burnley didn't really want to sell and that Newcastle are wealthy.

Not sure Divock is the best of bets there with his availability and consistency record.

Agree that Divock is more talented and could be worth more in certain circumstances. Despite his natural talent, when given the chance, Divock hasn't made the most of it or hasn't been available when needed. His value will reflect that.

You have to ask which clubs need and can afford to have a laid back character like Big Div in their front line?

13 Jan 2022 11:50:42
The problem with that comparison Zippy is that no one other than Newcastle would've paid £25m for Wood.

If we activate our year extension option on Origi, so he doesn't leave for free, I'd say we'd get around £10m at the most considering his lack of game time and the fact that he'd only have a year left.

How long did woods have left on his contract?

13 Jan 2022 12:43:13
JK23, Bobbie actually has done it in the PL in 17/ 18 along with 7 assists. He scored 27 goals in all comps. that season.

OP, As for a player's actual worth, it's a case of supply and demand. Newcastle are desperate and were ripe for the taking and Burnley cleaned them out of 25m for a striker who is not even as good as Divvy ability-wise and skill set.

Also and most importantly, a plyer is only worth what someone will be willing to pay for him and if the buyer is desperate, they will pay what is asked by the selling club. It's business.

Oli just for info my comment wasn’t aimed as a dig at Bobby. It was meant to show that 15 league goals a season isn’t a easy number to achieve. Without looking into it At a guess I’d say maybe only 5-6 players on average a season get 15 plus goals in the league and there’s us with one in our reserves who gets roughly 500 mins of league football a season.
Not a dig at Origi but if premier league managers believed he could get 15 league goals a season they would be bidding for him. And if Klopp believed it he would be coming on for far more minutes.

13 Jan 2022 13:47:47
JK23, not sure what you understood by my post BUT at no point did I imply that you took a dig at Bobbie nor Origi. You asked an honest question and I answered it honestly. That's it. And I agree that 15 goals a season is no mean feat.

Same with Origi. That part of my post was in response to the OP's comments comparing Origi with Chris Wood. Now if you thought I came across that way then, my framing may have been percieved that way. In that, I apologise.

13 Jan 2022 13:50:45
Wood was £25m because that was his release clause.

13 Jan 2022 14:31:32
Oli I never said you implied anything mate. You answered my question and I replied just expanding on my original post 👍.

13 Jan 2022 14:32:13
And no need to apologise 👍.

Out of curiosity I’ve just had a quick look at Woods stats. And unbelievably he’s scored 49 Premier league goals in the last 4 and a half seasons.

If that was in a pub quiz I would have guessed he’s scored less than 20 in that time.

Who knows might end up being a shrewd signing for them. No idea where they’ve found the 37 mill from this window as we all know owners can’t put their own money in 😜.

I think origi could definitely be a useful player for any team, he’s been useful for a champions league and league winning team, but with his lack of real game time I think these clubs in trouble would be hesitant to take that gamble. Would love to see how he’d get on at Burnley or somebody.

{Ed025's Note - i think he has found his niche at liverpoo ljerry, good option off the bench and does not really seek game time...lazy sod .. :)

13 Jan 2022 15:43:35
Get a room! 🤣.

13 Jan 2022 15:52:26
JK23 Fair enuff, man.

13 Jan 2022 17:08:04
Would origi step his game up for a relegation fight? Apart from a few important goals he’s scored he’s never looked like he’s interested or got the drive to be a first team player.

13 Jan 2022 19:25:21
Firmino scored 15 League goals in 2017-2018. His lowest total in the league is 9 - in the last two seasons!

13 Jan 2022 19:41:57
They paid £25 mill as that was his release clause. I’m sure Burnley didn’t want to sell to a relegation rival and for Newcastle it could be worth the transfer fee alone taking away goals from Burnley who will be fighting for survival against Burnley for sure come May.

13 Jan 2022 23:00:20
Chris Wood is no Zlatan but he is fair value at that price imo. To say origi is as good is disrespectful to Wood imo. The boy can play and it'll suit him to have Saint-Maxim, Joelinton and the other fast guy buzzing around him.

13 Jan 2022 18:45:57
True that Ed! I’d just like to see how he’d cope whether he could flourish or plummet I guess, I think he’s a decent enough player but as you say maybe he’s just comfortable as he is.

{Ed025's Note - hes a very good option from the bench jerry, never a starter though but you could say that about bobby and mini as well, great first 11 you have mate but the squad is as weak as piss im afraid..

13 Jan 2022 22:08:20
Spot on about Div, Ed025. He is one of those rare people who seems happy with his job. He is an ideal member of the squad - happy with the amount of game time, never let's anybody down when he does get on the pitch, has an eye for goal and has scored some crackers and some vital goals for us. What they used to call a ‘great club man’ in the old days 😉.

{Ed025's Note - absolutely WDW..

14 Jan 2022 03:57:57
WDW

lol he knows he wouldn’t ever get that money anywhere else 😂😂😂.

14 Jan 2022 05:51:11
These comparison are ridiculous. Wood went for such a high fee because Burnley didn’t want to sell, especially to a relegation rival. I think with origi both player and club are happy and he won’t move unless a similarly inflated bid came in. At the end of the day he’s happy to play a bit part role at the club which suits us and he scores important goals.
