Well I don’t know about everyone else but I think that Darwin Nunez is some player!
First leg he went down far to easy but last night he stayed on he’s feet and proved what a fantastic finisher he is and only 21 years old. I know he's not the same position as Salah but if Salah did leave I would go all out for Nunez.

Was following his development before our QF. Even more impressed with him now. Power, pace, tenacity and a decent finisher. Has Haaland vibes about him in terms of physique. He has a great career in front of him.

But, it sounds like he's attracting a lot of interest from elsewhere and his price tag could be huge when he does move from Benfica.

United, City, Bayern, Dortmund, Real, Barca, Arsenal, Newcastle are all in the market for forwards this summer whereas our situation is not clear given the contract situations of the 3 Amigos.

He wouldn’t fit our style of play but a decent player.

Would be a class Firmino replacement, he would do quality the middle of our attack.

He did well last night, no doubts about that.
Probably put about another £10 million on his asking price as a result.
He was up against Matip though, who is our slowest centre back.
I noticed that Gomez could match him pace-wise, so maybe Matip made him look good to some extent.
Nunez is a good finisher though, give the lad that, and obviously playing with a lot of confidence at the moment.

Jones just asking out of curiosity but why do you think that Nunez wouldn't fit into our style of play?

14 Apr 2022 13:24:10
He needs to stop diving but he is an excellent young player who'd suit our team seamlessly.

However he's only realistic if Salah leaves.

Aye, he looks a very decent player. Just don't tell Harry tho 🤣.

When the time comes for Firmino to leave, I think our system will have to change anyway. We're seeing it already when Jota is playing instead of Firmino, and I doubt very much there is a player out there that does what Firmino does: so like for like replacement is out of the question.

So if you accept our system up front will have to change eventually, going for Nunez is not a bad idea. I do like his direct style of playing. He goes forward and towards the goal in a straight line always. But I don't buy the excuse that we don't have the funds to buy him, if Klopp decides he really wants him. We spent 3-4 months reading and screaming that we're a "sell to buy club" Who did we sell exactly to spend 40 million plus on Luis Diaz?

{Ed002's Note - The debt is getting bigger and bigger - don't forget taht.}

ArAy I agree and if anything the system has already moved on this season. Bobby has only started 9 league games and 2 CL games. So for the other 22 league and 8 CL we have had to find a system without Bobby and looking at the results we’ve done ok.

This isn’t me saying Bobby is no longer required as again last night he showed what he is capable of. It’s just put the argument to bed for me that Salah and Mane and the Liverpool team cannot play or score without him.

Just to finish off on Bobby he has now surpassed his total goal tally for last season.

With 11 goals and four assists in total, Roberto Firmino is averaging a goal involvement every 111 minutes in all competitions this season. That figure stood at 187 minutes for 2020-21, 157 minutes for 2019-20 and 142 minutes for 2018-19.

His most prolific season for Liverpool was 2017-18 when he ended up with 27 goals and 17 assists – a goal involvement every 95 minutes.

He would suit our style of play. I wouldn't mind him at all. Incredible finishes even if they were offside. And that volley. He was unlucky that Ali realized he was the "one", started seeing everything in green matrix numbers and just said "no"

Nunez reminds me of the player Andy Carroll could have been if he’d stayed out of kebab shops etc.

When you say “the system” must change, what “system” are you referring to exactly?
We play with three forwards and three midfielders virtually all the time.
Bobby may drop deeper when he plays whereas Jota is more direct but the whole thing is fluid in any case?
I’ve noticed that Jota scores most of his goals around the penalty spot which indicates a more direct style but his speed allows him to move around at will.
Against the deep block, his heading ability is welcomed being in the box too.
But surely Liverpool’s system is one of flexibility, we’re not tied to one specific way?

Funnily enough watching him over the 2 legs I did think he was a poor man’s Haaland. (Not in a derogatory way though, he looks a good talent in his own right)
Not sure he would fit in at Liverpool but it’s going to be interesting watching his career.

{Ed0666's Note - He reminds me a lot of Raul Jimenez the wolves striker

In looks or playing style?

14 Apr 2022 19:09:59
Juicer, "the system" I was referring to involves using Firmino as a false 9 (a term which has not always been clear to me) as the following: pressing from the front and chasing down the ball carrier amongst the back 5, spending a lot of time in midfield in linking up play and more of the pressing, creating space in the middle, for the other two up front, by going on diagonal runs which drag opposing defenders out of position and opening up the middle for the other two to shoot, and above all stressing and prioritizing, assists to better positioned players. Now how many No. 9's are out there that do (and would agree to do) this? Can you see a Suarez, Benzema, Lewandowski, Kane etc etc do this on a fulltime basis? All of these guys are mostly about run, dribble and shoot, dribble, swivel and shoot (I'll accept that Kane spends time in midfield, but not so much) . You can see most No.9's are focused on scoring and that more than anything else. You don't get that impression with Firmino.

ArAy I’ve not even looked mate but I’m sure Suarez, Kane, Lewa and Benzema have all got pretty high assists and chance creation stats throughout their careers. I might be wrong though.

JK. Ahem. We frown on stats and statisticians on this site. 😉.
