I'm thinking about Gini Wijnaldum tonight. To miss out on all of these must be hard to take, considering the yo-yo season he's had. I just wonder if he'd be there to cheer his old boys up.

But part of the reason we've gone to the next level (whether people like it or not) is that we found better solutions on the pitch to the likes of Gomez, Wijnaldum and Firmino. 3 players who played their part, but were never truly elite. Konate, Thiago and Diaz are all just better players. Wijnaldum would be a grossly overpaid impact sub if we'd matched what PSG are paying him.

Mane playing through the middle changed the game. Jota will now need to work incredibly hard to make into the starting eleven. I can’t see it happening myself.

MK scouser, i think your being a bit harsh on Gomez in injuries have held him back, but his a world class defender in the making, I'd rather him come off the bench, then englands current no1.

Finglasred, Gomez was a decent player pre-injury and i suspect he'll get back to that level. He has always relied on his recovery pace though. For me he's just a slightly taller Kyle Walker. Seems a great bloke, but i personally think he'll follow Gini out the door this summer. I suspect Bobby might too.

The 3 of them are cult heroes but we've moved on as a team in my opinion.

At the end of this season Gomez will have lost almost 2 years of playing Premier League and CL football as a centre back.

I agree the lad is quality and you only have to look at the current crop of English Centre backs (Maguire, Mings etc) to see how good he actually is. Problem is he’s battling for a starting place with Matip and Konate and not such overrated English centre half’s.

He’s likely sacrificed going to a World Cup by staying as a squad player so it could be a case of how much more he’s willing to sacrifice.

Matip can’t go on forever but the way he’s remained injury free this season shows he could potentially have a few more seasons left in him.

I’d love Gomez to stay but I think a lot depends on him.

Can’t help but feel sorry for Jota. He came into the squad knowing we had a formidable front three and he would have some job ahead of him to break into it, but break into it he did, only for Diaz to come in and throw him right back out again.

Konate, Thiago and Diaz have won nothing of note yet. Let's wait until they actually do. As it stands Gini has a League and CL medal in his back pocket and a few other minor medals.

Salah, some people are very strange and would rather reminisce over the past than look forward to the future. Djimi Traore has more Champions League titles than Tsimikas but that doesn't mean he was a better left back.

Mikey I think Jota has been our worst player since Diaz has come in but has still been given chances so I don't feel too bad for him. Really needs to up his game.

The proof is in the pudding, plain and simple. If these are elite players and better than the three mentioned then it should result in trophies. After all they are added to an already great team?

You're right MK, Traore did win a CL medal. The team didn't win much else. The team Gini and the other 2 played in won the League as I have said and CL plus other minor trophies. That makes them a great team in my opinion. It seems that the excuses are ready to be rolled out if THIS team doesn't succeed, which Konate, Thiago and Diaz are a part of?

You can't say Konate is a betetr player than Gomez already. He's only been here 5 minutes and has been very ropey in a couple of games. I think his goals have glossed over some of his mistakes personally. People seem to forget Gomez and VVD were the preferred partnership for a long time before his injury and he is only kept out of the team by Matip playing very well and staying fit, he just hasn't had a chance to get his place back. I would also Firmino was an 'elite' player whilst at LFC, I agree he isn't at that level now, but to dismiss him so nonchalantly is disrespectful for what he has done over the years. Diaz is certainly an excellent signing and incredible player, but let's hope he does it long term before building his statue.

I'll remember Wijnaldum for being part of the team that won the League for the first time in 30 years and being part of the team that won the European Cup for the sixth time. With a special mention for his two goals in the semi final.
Apart from that I don't think about him that much.
