James Pearce reporting “Liverpool hope to agree contract extension with naby keita” 🤦🏻‍♂️ I simply cannot see the logic behind it! What has he done to deserve a new contract, he’s been nothing short of a disaster since he signed! Always injured and even when he’s not he has one good game in 5! I’d rather see him leave for free and cut our losses than give him a new contract!

Agree0 Disagree0

Liverpool Echo* reporting that PSG are/ have made a 42.5 million bid for him.

*big pinch of salt.

01 Jun 2022 10:06:52
Please no.

01 Jun 2022 10:23:43
He’s absolute pony! 4 years and he’s played f all! Get rid of him.

01 Jun 2022 10:42:01
New contract higher sell on. Couts Suarez e. g.

01 Jun 2022 10:49:45
@STRALFC, that worked with Suarez and coutinho because they were very good players, it’s not going to work with keita because nobody is going to pay the fee we would want if he’s has 3-4 years left on his contract.

01 Jun 2022 11:34:56
4th choice midfielder behind Hendo, Thiago and Fabinho! Maybe the cash ain't there for an upgrade? Klopp might have to work with what he got.

01 Jun 2022 12:08:59
I think selling is the best option, he’s not worked out as a signing and it’s not as if Jones or Elliott couldn’t replicate his role in the squad. We do need to bring in a midfielder who can play anchor as well as box to box (Sangare? ) and Keita’s proceeds would go nicely towards it.

01 Jun 2022 12:12:51
It’s a business decision. If there’s no buyers they don’t want a £50 million asset leaving on a free 🤷‍♂️ Doesn’t necessarily mean the club rate him,

{Ed001's Note - it is throwing good money after bad, a bad business decision.}

01 Jun 2022 12:27:57
Do any of the eds know about this? Is it true Liv want to give him new contract? I think ed002 say that PSG is unlikely to be interested. I don't see any good in giving him new contract at all, rather let him leave for free than new contract.

{Ed002's Note - I don't know.}

01 Jun 2022 13:37:39
Naby Keita is NOT a “£50million asset”. That is what Liverpool paid for him, and man oh man were we ripped off there. Keita is in the top 5 worst pound-for-pound signings the club has ever made - he can’t shoot, can’t pass, shirks tackles, has no dynamism or athleticism, can’t take set pieces and has little to no defensive ability, not to mention his injury history.
No club in their right or wrong mind is paying 50 million for Naby Keita. Giving him a new contract would be a bizarre thing to do given that it is looking more and more likely that some of our star names, players that have given everything for our club, are being allowed to leave.

01 Jun 2022 14:02:25
Keita cost nearer 65 million when all said and done I believe. He simply has not been able to meet the expectations that were set when he played in Germany. He has been either unable or unwilling to adapt and perform at any where near the levels on the pitch expected of him. However and it is a big however, Klopp seems to like him. He must see things in him day in day out in training we simply do not see on the pitch on match day but that may not be enough for him next season. It is obvious that had Elliott not been injured he would have been ahead of him in the pecking order this season, so if Harvey regains fitness he should be next season as well, and you would expect the same from Jones and the lad Carveliho (? Spelling) from Fulham. That makes him 6th choice . An expensive one at that. The best thing all round is surely cut the loses and sell, perhaps for a quarter of what was paid if necessary.

01 Jun 2022 14:09:17
To say he’s in the top five worst signings ever is a bit harsh Lowe, I mean, there’s Balotelli, Carroll, Downing, Kozma, Paul Stewart, Itandje, Degen, Konchesky, Markovic, Julian Dicks, Nigel Clough, El Haji Diouf, Salif Diao, Bruno Cheyrou, Fernando Morientes who were all far worse. At least I can say I’ve seen Keita have several good games.

01 Jun 2022 14:29:37
VVVV - Pound-for-pound, though I do see your point. Keita is obviously far from the worst player to play for us but the the difference with him is not only his ridiculous transfer fee but the accompanying wages.
The list you’ve provided is quite excruciating. The absolute state of it lol.

01 Jun 2022 14:30:32
He's far from our worst signing, but he still isn't good enough and I don't see the benefit in offering him a new deal.

That Klopp has used him as much as he has tells me we need a new first team centre mid more than it tells me anything else. Given our apparent interest in signing a big money midfielder, the club seem to be of a similar view.

01 Jun 2022 14:34:41
There is also a lot of talk about, but not here, Mo pushing buttons about the new contract saying he'll go to another Premier League club if his contract runs out next season. What a way to turn fans if it is true. And if it's true he should be sold now.

{Ed0666's Note - what’s the problem with him
Going to another premier league club? People go and work for rival companies everyday they aren’t castigated or demonized.

01 Jun 2022 14:43:37
Lowe, I was cringing as I wrote that list and there still a few I forgot.

01 Jun 2022 14:34:52
I understand that he’s not set the world alight Ed001 but is it not better to renew and protect whatever market value he does have, rather than lose him for free next year? Surely it would cost us less to renew his deal and sell him in a year or two rather than him leave for free? Genuinely curious.

{Ed001's Note - no one is going to buy him as his wage is so high. Just get rid and save the wages. It is stupid to keep renewing players to protect the value of something that is essentially worthless and costing the club money.}

01 Jun 2022 15:28:59
Naby for me, has not fulfilled his actual potential for which he was signed for, IMO. He should be sold.

01 Jun 2022 15:30:17
As soon as I read that polecat my view is now to sell salah and get as much as we can. The briefing his agent is putting out in the press really isn’t winning friends here.

Complaining about only being offered a 15% pay increase while there is a cost of living crisis for millions from a man who earns more in one week than most do in three years cumulatively, then happily saying he’d play for a rival team in the premier league is a really good way of annoying out of most reasonable supporters.

Truth is that Salah has no intention of renewing and we’ve been here before with various others, get the cash in, reinvest it boldly in top talent. Previously my opinion was do what was needed to make it happen, but we have to consider life beyond Salah and Mane.

Nunez and Bowen would more than cushion the blow of Salah and Mane leaving and refreshes our front line with a new dynamic. Sell Keita, bring in someone like Sangare or Bissouma, sign the lad from Aberdeen and we’re fixed for next year. It would bring a new era. With Milner, Ox and Keita leaving it will mean more chances for Jones and Elliott to develop and a midfield player like Sangare or Bissouma makes us a hard team to play against in tight matches alongside Fab as well as giving us a fallback if Fab is injured or suspended.

01 Jun 2022 15:28:59
Naby for me, has not fulfilled his actual potential for which he was signed for, IMO. He should be sold.

01 Jun 2022 15:44:55
Without a doubt, Keita's time is up and he should be sold. I don't know what's up with the club's thinking? I can see the many angles but it still doesn't make sense to me. And if he is given a raise in wages with the new contract, all hell will break loose, out here. It sends out the wrong signal in so many ways, to both fans and his team mates. If this happens, clearly the finance guys will have had their say, while the football guys at the club will have remained quiet.

01 Jun 2022 15:45:28
Triple6 - to be fair I couldn’t care less that Joe blogs moved from Shell to BP. Just sayin

RegardsMo, that startling headline is attributed to the same 1:1 interview he gave a few weeks ago. I think the daily mail have released the headline today? Anyways look like a planned article for end of season to drive clicks and traffic amongst Liverpool fans. Which it has lol. But Mo hasn’t said anything different to why he said a few weeks back.

01 Jun 2022 16:00:01
Keita needs to leave IMO. It’s just like Bayern let Tolisso leave, even though he’s not a bad player and was their record signing, I think.
There’s enough sample size to show it isn’t worth renewing his contract.

01 Jun 2022 16:48:57
Giving keita a new contract feels as bad as the time it was announced we bid 37 million for caroll. I'd rather jones was given his gametime to really grow into the player he can be. Midfield is our weakest area. We've no cover for fabinho, thiago isn't reliable to be fit and Hendersons getting older. He has done nothing to justify a new contract if its purely football reasons.

01 Jun 2022 17:03:29
Naby really brings the best out in us fans 🤣.

01 Jun 2022 17:42:48
This subject is about the only thing I have ever seen on this forum page with so much unanimity. Ever.

01 Jun 2022 17:52:08
Keita isn't everyone's cup of tea, but if a CL and PL winning manager and his staff see something they like then I'm inclined to trust their judgement.
When people say "I don't see what they see in him", that's the point.
Multiple trophy winning coaching team's opinion or random Internet posters.
No contest.

01 Jun 2022 18:26:42
@flashthered, you don’t have to be a world class manager to be able to judge whether a player is good enough or not! It’s not hard to understand that the only reason he is still here and playing is due to the fact no one else will pay the fee and wages required to sign him and we’re short of midfield options. If we had a fully fit midfield and one or 2 others who were first team quality, he wouldn’t be anywhere near the team!

01 Jun 2022 21:24:04
Ed’s, was Keita a very poor purchase by Klopp or had you seen enough of him to think he was a good buy who just hasn’t worked out for us?

{Ed001's Note - how can it be a good buy who hasn't worked out? He did play well in Germany, right up until we signed him, then his head disappeared up his backside. But that is the problem, it was a mistake by Klopp because he went away from his usual pattern to sign him. Normally he signs a certain type of person, but Keita does not fit. He listened to Mane, who was friends with him.

But it is the only major transfer mistake I can think of in Klopp's time with us, so it is not a bad record at all!}
