Ed1 do you feel young footballers are becoming too functional under today's managers and we are less likely to see players like Messi again?

For me players like Jones are told to play it safe when they should be given licence to attack first rather than the fashionable keep ball passing backwards and sideways rather than dribbling and taking a player on like Macca and Barnes (even Diaz turns back too often when he can beat most players with his skill and pace) .

Thoughts?

{Ed001's Note - very much so, I have been saying it for years, modern managers want robots to follow instructions rather than flair players. It is the academy system that is the problem, players in European football are being overcoached, particularly in the UK. Kids can't just kick a ball around in the streets any more like we used to anywhere and everywhere we went.}

Jumpers for goalposts eh ed.

{Ed001's Note - it is the best way for kids to learn. They develop with freedom and have to get involved in all aspects of the game when playing with their mates in the park. We used to rotate all positions and so learnt to read the game. Playing organised games is great too, but they are being shown only the way their coach things is best that way, not finding out for themselves.}

Agreed. Such a shame as it’s meant to be entertainment but yet again that’s why most neutral fans prefer watching Liverpool under Klopp than ManCity as Pep is the master of over coaching (though he is pretty good at it to be fair :)!

{Ed001's Note - exactly mate. That is one of the reasons I love Klopp so much, he gives players a lot more freedom than most modern day coaches.}

It's funny when I take my lad to his matches. Him and his mates all try and do the turns and runs you see on the fifa games along with the skills that are on them. I'm all for natural ability being nurtured but these fifa skills usually end up with the ball being lost.

Man I miss those days. Using my gateposts for goalposts and shouting ‘CAR! ’ every time a car went past as we all moved to the side of the road.
Happy times.
In regards to Jones I think it’s the opposite. He needs more discipline in his game to play in our midfield. We constantly underestimate the importance of that midfield 3 in the system we play.
Yes they need to defend but the 2 most important factors are anticipation (to win the ball quickly and stop counter attacks) and ball retention. With our full backs pushed so high the midfielders simply cannot lose the ball under any circumstances.
It’s why more attack minded players have struggled to adapt as they tend to try more difficult passes and lose the ball leaving us wide open.

Hopefully Klopp can encourage Jones to release the pass that one touch earlier. Watching him live it’s clear he has the ability and he sees the pass, it’s just he chooses to have that extra touch sometimes that then closes the window of opportunity.

Spot on, Ed. There was a time where clubs where I grew up, would come to watch kids play on the streets in the localities during the summer holidays to scout players cos street ball was where it was at in those days. That's where kids were free to be kids and be themselves and the flair and skill were a joy to watch.

Now with the micro-coaching now rampant in the academies in Europe (this has been the case for 20 yrs btw), there is literally no flair, natural instinct nor natural skill left in these kids anymore. Sad.

Absolutely Jk, he holds onto the ball too long and turns back on himself too frequently. Perhaps it’s a confidence thing.

09 Jun 2022 12:09:14
Agree with JK. Although I don't think it's a lack of confidence with Curtis. More a lack of appreciation of the level he's playing at - players are better and everything needs to be quicker. Pass opportunities like the one's Thiago sees come and go in an instant.

I think and hope Jones will become a LFC regular for years to come. Plus, like Trent, he has the added benefit of coming from the city which is priceless to have in the squad.

I understand the problem with academies over coaching etc. But I think the main problem is that kids don't 'play out' anymore.

We use to do everything with a football - curby (trying to land the ball on the curb edge), 1 kick (2 players hitting a ball at a wall -only one kick allowed), foot tennis (chalk a tennis pitch onto the street) .

This, in my opinion is where we use gain all our ball control and ball manipulation skills.

I don't see kids playing these games anymore. Shame really.

{Ed001's Note - agreed.}

09 Jun 2022 12:55:48
Curtis is a class act on and off the pitch he will only get better this is for sure a big season coming for our trio of youngsters really hope they can kick on and show what there about.

09 Jun 2022 13:05:29
Whereas I don’t think Jones is there yet to be a regular starter (I agree with others that his decision making is a bit iffy and he holds on to the ball too long), I think he offers the same qualities that Keita is supposed to offer and I think we could afford to sell Keita and give Jones more chance to establish himself.

09 Jun 2022 13:13:13
You learned close control playing football in the street when you were wearing wellies, lmao.
Happy days ????.

09 Jun 2022 13:54:40
Have footballers really been that bad for the last 20 years under the micro coaching.

I think if players had no flair, instinct or skill etc I wouldn’t be still watching the game.

09 Jun 2022 14:26:09
JK if the players had no flair, instinct or skill I’d think I was watching Everton.

09 Jun 2022 14:31:59
Djimi Traore used to play in wellies. I think.
You lot were lucky, we had nowhere to play football. We'd be given a thrashing if we were caught playing with a football on the polo pitches.

09 Jun 2022 15:25:53
Lol Rigsby, did you go to School with Boris Johnson? Polo pitches? The only horses I ever saw in the flesh as a kid were mounted riot police ????.

09 Jun 2022 20:13:59
I wish I'd gone to school the Eton Mess, VVVV. I'd have had his head down the toilet everyday.

10 Jun 2022 03:42:57
I would be surprised if Jones was being given any extra chances to play conservative other than what is usual for our midfielders. It's not like we've generated loads of attacking midfielders with flair under Klopp! workhorses more like it!
