Righto. So who is everyone’s preferred target to replace Salah next year? I just read an interesting article that compares stats of Salah at Roma before he joined and style of play that raised some interesting ideas.
Bowen was the obvious one, and probably my preferred choice if possible however Moussa Diaby was also mentioned alongside Chiesa and Saka. Any thoughts on these any others?

Agree0 Disagree0

If money is no object then Bowen has been the player i've suggested for nearly 2 years. Wanted him when we sold Shaqiri. However his career has taken off and now he's probably going to be valued at £100m by next summer. So I'd keep on eye on Neto and Olise next season and go for one of them if their niggling injuries clear up.

Probably someone who plays in the Portuguese league that we haven't heard of yet but who is about to have an incredible season!

Or, perhaps we have a complete change of system. Maybe someone like Carvalho takes Salah's place and we buy a new CM or someone more central like an Nkunku.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a surprise!

12 Months is also a very long time in football. I mean who really had heard of Diaz or Nunez 12 months ago. Let's get this season started first and see how the new guys bed in.

23 Jun 2022 17:36:47
I have big hopes for elliot and carvalho. and personally think 1 of those is going to claim his spot. And if his form from the end of the season continues it might be sooner than he thinks. Hopefully not.

23 Jun 2022 18:06:07
Bowen had a stand out season last year but very much with English players he’s just as likely to have an average season next year as he is as good or better.

If he has as good or better a season then I think he might come into the conversation but if we’re buying off 1 good Premier league season then Michu will be cheaper ?.

23 Jun 2022 18:19:19
Martenelli from Arsenal looks a good player ot will we go back to Adama?

23 Jun 2022 18:30:58
Sadio Mane.

23 Jun 2022 19:06:25
I really think Antony from Ajax have the potential to be special, not the same type of player but could be a great player under Klopp.

23 Jun 2022 19:38:26
Given the club-record fee paid and the 6 year contract signed, I think there will be a tremendous amount of pressure on Nunez, and Klopp and coaching staff, for him to hit the ground running and produce. As such, I see some of the emphasis shifting from the wingers and more towards the center, with our fullbacks continuing to bomb forward and cross. So I don't see the club going for a like for like replacement for Salah (it's not like there are many, anyway) . Clearly our attack is in its "transition" phase (am surprised nobody has used that word), so Klopp will have to manage it very delicately.

The new guy over at ManC will be banging in the goals from day one, because that's what he does everywhere he goes. So it will be crucial for our guy to do just as much, and hope that Salah, Jota, Diaz and Firmino keep up or even improve on their previous levels.

£100 Million sounds outrageous to me, for Bowen. He's good, no doubt, but not twice as good as the £40-50 Million guys, that we've had, still have and are out there playing for other clubs.

23 Jun 2022 19:38:45
We might not need a similar player to salah, as we might change the formation. We will probably see less goals from the wing and more from the AM and striker position. I would go with paqueta. He is an AM by trade, but can play Any position from midfield and forward. He is similar to firmino.

23 Jun 2022 20:00:28
But sure doesn't Neto play on the left Adam?

23 Jun 2022 20:32:22
ArAy, a lot of people are focusing on Haaland but I have a feeling Julian Alvarez will do extremely well. People seem to forget City bought him and he has gone under the radar, but he looks an excellent signing, though he'll probably be crap now I've said that!

23 Jun 2022 21:38:24
Stuie_boy, I haven't forgotten about Alvarez. Have never seen him play, but he's at the top of almost every Gen Next list I've seen, so I trust he's talented enough. Either ManC are planning on moving Haaland on in 2-3 years to Madrid or Barcelona (he will end up there one way or another) or it's just standard operating procedure for them to have 2 top players for each position. You remember Aguero was uncontested at the time, but they still went out and got Gabriel Jesus anyway? It's clearly their recruitment strategy.

23 Jun 2022 21:42:43
RedFuzz, I like Paqueta too. But I think Klopp will groom Elliott for that AM position. Anyway, after what we did with Fekir, I doubt the Lyon owner (Aulas) will let us anywhere near his stadium or building for any negotiations, LOL.

23 Jun 2022 21:57:39
Interesting reads. Always interesting to read others opinions, especially when they change regularly. Since I made my original post Iv actually changed my mind and I think Diaby would be best! Guess we’ll find out this time next year!

23 Jun 2022 22:12:04
Chiesa for me but i don't think he'd come! i like Saka but i'd hate to see us paying the bones of £100m for him when we have Gordon coming through. Best case scenario would be if Salah signed on till Gordon was of an age that he'd be ready. Whoever replaces him though is going to struggle to get near his numbers.

23 Jun 2022 23:36:15
If we are buying to replace salah. try moussa diaby or Antony. Both exceptionally talented and young. shrewd investment. Salah has no intentions of signing and think elliot or carvalho will claim salahs spot. Are the club looking to move salah on now?

{Ed002's Note - No.}

24 Jun 2022 06:33:15
I think moussa Diaby right now.

24 Jun 2022 07:46:58
You're correct Barry. Neto plays mainly on the left and is left. However, Salah is a left footer who played on the left before we signed him (and Mane played on the right at Southampton) . I don't really focus on what position players play in for their current club. I prefer to look at their skillset to decide if they'd fit into our team.

{Ed077's Note - "Salah is a left footer who played on the left before we signed him" Thats incorrect. Did you ever watch him play in Italy?

24 Jun 2022 08:16:29
I watched 4 or 5 full games of Moussa Diaby at Leverkusen. can't believe anyone on earth would want him to replace Salah. He is not anywhere near good enough to play for Everton let alone replace Salah. Please stop watching highlights and thinking a player is great because of them. Jeez.

24 Jun 2022 09:22:35
If I could choose anyone it would be Chiesa everytime, such a good footballer.

24 Jun 2022 09:55:43
Aray haven't lyon got new owners now?

24 Jun 2022 10:47:42
Oh, do they? I didn't know.

{Ed001's Note - just about to be bought yes. Shows you don't read my review of the day there ArAy!}

24 Jun 2022 11:00:31
MKS, Salah played on the right at first with Roma (cos that's where he played at Fiorentina before hand) . And then, he played behind Dzeko at Roma when Luciano Spaletti took over. There's a reason Dzeko was nearly in tears when Salah left cos he was his foil and took the pressure off him which allowed him to be Serie A leading scorer in 16/ 17.

As for who I would like to replace Salah, Chiesa would be my choice BUT he is recovering from a bad injury and Juve won't sell, IMO.

24 Jun 2022 08:04:46
Although Salah has mainly been a RW since moving to Basel, Salah did start his career as a LB to be fair to MK.

24 Jun 2022 08:21:19
Not a lot Ed077 but that doesn't really alter my point. I did double check though and you are corect; Salah's only played LW 20 times in his career. Either way Mane played RW for Southampton and LW for us, Gini played LM for Newcastle and CM for us, Firmino played AM/ LM for Hoffenheim and ST for us, Lallana played LM for Southampton and CM for us etc. List goes on and on of players who changed position when signing for another club.

I still stand by my statement that Neto would potentially be great for us on the RW (next summer) if he can stay fit and kick on next season.

{Ed077's Note - see, you could have used so many examples but chose the one that is factually incorrect in the first post. Saying Salah is (played) LW would be like saying Caulker is a ST.

An on Neto, I think pre injury he looked a great prospect and hopefully he can get back firing next season after missing most of last season.

24 Jun 2022 18:15:21
I'll be honest Ed001, I used to do it every day. But of late, I've been skipping it preferring to read the jousting that goes on over transfers and rumours. You already caught me once before when I commented about Eriksen being allowed to play once again. I will go back to reading them. I admit there's always a couple of new and interesting tidbits in there.

{Ed001's Note - I was only joking mate, though obviously I would prefer people to read them, as they do take a lot of time and effort to put together.}

24 Jun 2022 19:21:37
Ed001, your efforts are always appreciated, but if I may ask for one thing, it is that you stay as far away as possible from any new superstitions and continue writing those post game reviews. Seriously. They are the highlight of the week on these pages. And maybe expand it to include all cup and European games too (okay, maybe that's asking for too much) .

{Ed001's Note - hopefully next season I should be back to writing them, all being well.}

24 Jun 2022 21:24:57
It's called a difference of opinion Malak.

Fact is there's no clear cut ready made Salah replacement that I see. Maybe raphina is best placed but I suspect he moves elsewhere.

I'd like a young raw player with the potential to become a Salah.

My own personal opinion is that's not Antony. He s neat and tidy. Reminds me of Sancho. He not fast enough for what I would want. Decent but nothing massively special as you think. I don't think he ll turn out to be the player you think he is.

One thing you can't deny about Diaby is his super quick. Easily a level or two above Antony's speed. Antony doesn't really dribble past players. He can get a little bit past to cross or get a shot off but Diaby can literally leave you for dead. He's got great energy and that low center of gravity. He also has good power to his shooting. He needs some polish but I honestly think he has some serious ability and a sky high ceiling.

But hey, klopp could easily have another idea to us and I'm sure he'll be right.

25 Jun 2022 00:40:20
Haaland.
I know he doesn't play in Salah's position but it would annoy City if we signed him.
