Re ed 066 excellent commencements on 5 sub rule. I don't like it as benefits us bigger clubs. I'd honestly rather see games reduced in length to 80', if that safeguards players from injury. Would balance the deck a bit too - not particularly in our club's interest- but would be good for the game overall.

{Ed0666's Note - I’ll be done with the game soon mate. Too many changes I’m a purist and sentimentalist. Soon there will be breaks within the half’s and kick ins instead of throw ins and it will all be nonsense

It’s the first time in my lifetime the rule has changed and i can see why it would benefit the bigger teams, however up until the 60s there were no subs. Late 80s it became 2, 90s it became 3. 25 years later it’s still 3. Was there the same arguments then? The best paid sports scientists think 5 subs are needed to manage minutes bc the intensity levels have gone up. I think maybe 5 subs but two of them have to be club developed players would work better?

I get how on the face of it it would benefit big clubs but I think it can benefit all.

The smaller clubs can try youngsters with less pressure and it could save them millions. Or generate millions in sales. Plus It means they can rotate their smaller squads more and hopefully avoid injuries from having to play too much.

Yes the bigger clubs can bring on some greater and better depth but that's the same with 3 subs anyway. It's just the nature of clubs having bigger resources then others.

WYred, my thinking is that if it improves the overall quality of premier league squads then there will be an inevitable trickle down effect where slowly slowly the lower leagues put better and better squads together by needing greater depth too. And that eventually leads to greater involvement and interest in the sport, at even lower and grassroots levels. Somewhat of a Utopian view I admit, but that's what I see.

I think the 5 subs rule has plenty of pros and cons and I just hope teams don’t see it as a further opportunity to waste time.

Football is an entertainments business and the game is already lost to bus parking, keepers and players time wasting and feigning injuries etc. The game needs more in play action over out of play.

Any law, rule or regulation is absolutely worthless if not enforced. Very simple. And in football games, the refereeing contingent is the enforcer. Up to them.

Ed066, Generally people don’t like change. There is also this nostalgia where people long for the “gold old days”.

Unfortunately change is inevitable for progress. Football will continue to grow and grow.

{Ed0666's Note - I agree with most of what you say but ‘progress’ is subjective

On the 5 subs and time wasting. Would the 5 subs be with a maximum of 3 breaks or 5 breaks?

{Ed077's Note - 3 + HT I think

26 Jun 2022 16:43:38
That was my understanding so therefore the extra subs will have no further impact on time wasting.
There was I believe a couple of years ago a change was considered were games were reduced to 60 minutes. As soon as the referee blew for an infringement or throw in or goal kick the clock was stopped and would only restart as the ball was back in play. I assume the 60 minutes was based the actual playing time on average. This would end for ever time wasting.

JK, teams will use it to waste time regardless cos every team likes to search for any competitive advantage they can get. Don’t be surprised if Klopp dies it esp in key games where we may need to hold the lead. That said, it only extends the amt of injury time so teams should have nothing to complain about if they do use the rule for time wasting.
