Honestly don't get it when people say they don't want Trent in midfield because his defending is suspect.

Firstly that's not entirely true. One on one he's not great but he regularly leads the team in interceptions and recoveries.

Two there are other aspects of midfield than breaking up play. Nobody is arguing to sell other midfielders because they can't defend. No reason Trent can't play a more creative or attacking role in midfield and leave the defending to defenders or a more defensive midfielder.

Agree3 Disagree0

I don't want Trent in midfield because he's the world's best right back. Why would you make him an ok to good midfielder?

I also don't want Trent in midfield because he will need to massively improve his peripheral vision, positional awareness and short passing game - something he doesn't have time for this short pre-season.

Trents not a midfielder and I'll be glad when this talk is eventually buried. Either by the new season or him signing for mardrid.
We have a wealth of extremely talented footballers going into the new season with a fresh coach and this constant talk of trent is annoying now. Mayve it's the scouser connection but he's no Gerrard and if Madrid offer an acceptable bid trents gone to. You'll have to take the talk of trent as a midfielder for the millenia time to the Madrid page.

Trent is better when receiving the ball facing the play rather than with his back to it.

He’ll be the best right back in the world when he’s at Real Madrid and doesn’t have to defend half as much.

Well if yall think he's the world best right back don't complain about his defending.

Personally I don't think he's the world best right back since tackling and being good one on one vs the winger are primary attributes of a right back and they're weaknesses of his.

He's an excellent attacking wing back as long as someone can cover his gaps, but as we've seen the defence struggles to do that so it makes more sense to play a traditional right back in that role until the defense is able to cover the gaps left by Trent pushing forward. Or until the midfield drops into right back to cover.

What another poster said is accurate in my opinion, he'd be better at teams not requiring much defending, like Madrid.

Out of curiosity what makes people think he's a great right back? The way he plays it's much more like a creative midfielder being shoe horned into right back.

Trent got a lot of goals starting at right back because the system we played allowed him to push forward into midfield. He wasn't scoring from the right back position he was scoring and assisting from the final third.

You can't blame people for saying what they are saying about TAA in midfield, simply because you saw exactly the same thing that everyone was seeing. In the inverted role for LFC he was leaving space behind, that posed difficulties for the CB behind him. And for England he didn't do much in that role, aside from scoring that penalty (which you'll agree he could have still done as an RB) . We all praise him for his offensive abilities and prowess. How much of that do we see when he is in the midfield? How much does LFC improve with him in midfield as oppossed to him as a right back? It's an open question for me.

17 Jul 2024 19:27:29
It’s not just the defence that hasn’t been able to cover the gaps, the elephant in the room is the complete lack of a top class defensive midfielder.

17 Jul 2024 21:14:58
Trent can never be the best right back in the world while Dani Crvajal is still playing.

A few years ago John Flanagan as the Cafu of the world. on this page. Anything can happen. Just saying.

{Ed025's Note - i think you had Flanagan and Allen on the books at the same time Jaguar...comedy gold mate..

Don't forget Borini ed.

Underneath the Arches Ed0025?.

{Ed025's Note - you have a very good memory Baz.. :)

I find myself agreeing with VV far often these days! Once again he is correct that the lack of a class DM is affecting our ability to use TAAs best attributes e. g. flying up the wing from RB and putting in excellent crosses and long range passes. There’s just not enough quality cover right now to fill the gap he leaves.

I was at their 1st gig Ed?.

{Ed025's Note - i bet you were baz.. :)

Flannagan before his injury was a good RB for us and was displacing Johnson. He did show that he had a crap character though so glad to see the back of him.

As for you Jaguar/ Harry, I seem to recall you gushing over the signing of Keita, claiming that he is the last piece of the puzzle and he would dominate midfield for us. We all have crap opinions that we have voiced here, including you, so not sure what you stand to gain from your "anything can happen on this page" comment since you are hardly the voice of reason that you seem to think you are.

18 Jul 2024 02:39:32
I want Trent at RB with license to get forward and whip crosses in. He is literally the best crosser in our team and one of, of not the best, crossers in the league. It seems daft not to utilize that talent.

18 Jul 2024 04:01:02
If trents ability is crossing surely it makes more sense to play him on right wing? If we are being honest he is a classic Beckham style right winger.

He's not a right back. he's also not a defensive midfielder.

I don't understand the obsession with defensive midfielders, there's maybe three or four that get played whose sole job is breaking up play. The fact there aren't many tells you they're not really required anymore now that pressing is much more refined.

18 Jul 2024 13:19:14
Ed, does Trent see himself as a midfielder and not an RB? And if he does, could that be a problem to him signing a new contract if Slot wants to utilize him as our starting RB?

{Ed002's Note - Not that I am aware. The issue is interest from Madrid.}
