Liverpool has shown many times under Edwards that they want the right player not just a body. Now imagine we had not waited to get VVD and gone for someone else that summer.

Similarly the Giorgi and chiesa deals are for the medium long term.

Giorgi is long term replacement for Allison

Chiesa is replacement if Salah decides not to stay. Chiesa will give us 3-4 years at top level still.

What has been unfortunate is that the club has not been able to get the players it wants for the positions it needs to address in the current term i. e. CDM and a defender.

This has led to fans thinking we have our priorities wrong in going for a GK and FWD.

My understanding is that they have been working on all 4 positions i. e. CDM, CB, GK and LF and it happens that we got the right players for the latter which are nor immediate requirements.

Having said that we should have gotten a CDM in by now as we have been working on this for 3 years now including fabhinios last season with us.

These problems don’t happen at Madrid? These problems are self inflicted.

28 Aug 2024 08:28:38
With all due respect that’s bollock. If they wanted Chiesa he has been available all summer. We cannot materialize a deal for Gordon hence the back up.

28 Aug 2024 09:03:39
He’s available for around £12m and nobody has wanted him.

Comparing Liverpool to Real Madrid, the biggest and most prestigious club on the planet (something LFC is in no way comparable to), is already a weird comparison to begin with and severely lacking in any true substance, IMO.

Apart from that, we have always had an interest in Chiesa going back 3 years (I think) so this link did not come out of nowhere. Now how do we even know he was available all summer? It could be that an opportunity came along where he is available now cos Juve can't get him to extend an if they don't sell him now, he walks after this season. Juventus cannot afford to do such things cos they ain't made of money. Not anymore. It is clearly an opportunity that has come, not that we were following him around all summer, in my view.

Now I have been a big fan of his for years till his grave injury in 21/ 22. He has battled some niggling knock (effects from recovery) and has been fit for the past 2 season esp. last season. Now, I understand the concerns of everyone esp. how he would fair in England and I know this happened with Thiago and we know how that worked out over time. We will have to see.

Sound argument, OliRed. Hard to argue. Still wouldn’t touch him, though.

Well in my opinion there's no excusing the fact that we've got this window terribly wrong. Chiesa? Too many ifs, buts and maybe's about him but we'll see, there's a reason why nobody else is in a hurry to buy him at such a low price (in todays market) .
A GK? a welcome addition we don't need right now but could prove to be beneficial in the future but no matter which way we look at it we haven't addressed the issues, we haven't strengthened the team whatsoever. All we've done is get rid of dead wood, get somebody in for the future and about to sign somebody who won't be improving our starting 11. Where is the ambition? a club wanting to win serious trophies has to do better than this.

The contract situation is another matter but it's terrible business as a whole from the club.

You can't sugarcoat s**t and I can't help but think these constant bad decisions will come back to haunt us long term.

28 Aug 2024 10:08:56
Didn't Real Madrid sign Joselu, Jonathan Woodgate and Tommy Gravesen?

28 Aug 2024 11:00:51
Ironic that a lot of people don’t want Chiesa because of his ACL injury, which he appears to have recovered from but want to sign VVD to a new contract.

VVD, who also had an ACL, no longer has age on his side and sooner or later his pace is going to fade.

The club has been following Chiesa for years and if they have decided he is who we need short-term, I am going to side with the subject matter experts. Pretty sure we will recoup the £12m fee after a season or two, as a bonus!

{Ed002's Note - He is a right footed LW primarily and Liverpool have three already.}

28 Aug 2024 12:00:57
@delvecs, nice one, my guy. Like I said, I am not even saying we should sign him immediately cos I am fully aware that the Chiesa many of us wanted 2/ 3 years ago, no longer exists due to his injury and it's after-effects and it would be stupid of me to ignore such a realities just cos "I want LFC to sign a player I love". It is what it is and there are arguments fo and against which are valid so again, we will have to see.

28 Aug 2024 11:57:08
I'm speculating but we could see Diaz, Jota and Salah more through the middle. What that says to Nunez, I don't know.
Can't Chiesa also play as a 10? That could mean Szob plays deeper but again, I don't know.
But for me, it'd be a signing based on price and availability when we need a defensive midfielder and experienced centre half more.

{Ed002's Note - He is versatile but primarily a fourth right footed left winger for the collection.}

28 Aug 2024 11:58:49
That's another sticking point, Ed02 however as you mentioned before, Slot loves wingers so there could be a bit of that. After all, he wanted Gordon even tho as you said, we have 3 left sided forwards there already.

28 Aug 2024 12:27:49
I think Chiesa is a very shrewd acquisition he’s European pedigree yes major injury and may have lost a bit but he will be a very useful player and it protects us if Diaz or salah leave this window and/ or next year . I don’t care for fees and wages that’s for someone at the club to worry about . If you asked me beginning of the window Chiesa would be added to the squad this year to be a backup / salah rotation when rest is needed I’d have bit your hand off .

I’d love salah to sign on for another year/ 2 and manage his minutes to get the best out of salah rather play him regardless as we have in the past .

Same goes for virg another 1/ 2 years and Trent 3/ 4 year extension and a couple of additions and we are a very complete squad capable of winning.

28 Aug 2024 12:45:20
Exactly Salah. In any business if you continue to make bad decisions it will not end well.

Why shouldn’t we strive to be equal or overtake Madrid? We got to the top of the tree only recently and for about 12 months we were the best team in the world. We got there by making excellent decisions. Why shouldn’t we strive for that, we are Liverpool not Spurs!

28 Aug 2024 12:48:28
@olired, if we end up signing him, and he pulls on our shirt, I'm all in. He'll be one of ours.

On the ACL, I'd rather him be trained by Slot's team than Klopp's. It wouldn't even surprise me if Jota stays injury free this season.

28 Aug 2024 12:54:40
Del piero baggio totti all beat acl. Chiesa will a great addition to that list.

28 Aug 2024 13:08:21
He is also capable of playing effectively on the right wing.

Aside from his favoured roles on either flank, he has also been deployed in several other attacking positions, given his capability of playing anywhere across the front line; he has most frequently been played in a central role as either an attacking midfielder or second striker, but has also been fielded as a main striker on occasion. He has even occasionally been used in deeper midfield roles, including as central midfielder. [nb 1] His pace and movement off the ball allow him to exploit spaces and make attacking runs to beat the defensive line and provide depth to his team.

Yes, he has been usually deployed as a left-winger but he is no one-trick pony.

28 Aug 2024 14:23:18
@delvecs, spot on. The kid is here now so like you, he will have all my support cos I loved him from the off. Oh, and he doesn't have to play right away so he has time to bed in fully and the new tactics. Hopefully, Jota stays injury-free as well cos wehn on form, he is lethal in the box.

@StEtienneAmen to add to your point on Chiesa, his repertoire is that vast, man. If he can even rekindle half of the ability he had/ showed pre-injury, that's good enuff for me.

28 Aug 2024 14:40:17
Mane was bought as a right winger but moved to the left when we bought Salah.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it’s ludicrous to pidgeon hole a player into one position on the pitch. A good winger can play either side, a good CB can play either side, a good midfield player can play anywhere in midfield.

All of this ‘but he’s a left winger’ should be left on the computer games. He’s not a computer game, he’s a human being with attributes of an attacking player. He can learn to play anywhere across the front or even in attacking midfield areas.
