Can anyone tell me why see spent a chunk sum on a decent, above average goalkeeper? Unless allison is planning on leaving next summer, we have the best keeper in the world for at least the next 4 seasons imo. Kelleher is a great back up. It's gone under the radar because the keepers on loan but that's a strange decision. He's no upcoming worldie.

Mamardashvilli can absolutely be the best keeper in the world in a few years he’s fantastic. Maybe he goes on loan again next season then comes back and we have a Cech/ Courtois situation. Either Alisson doesn’t drop off and we stick with him and sell GM on for profit or if he starts declining we play GM. Who knows what happens over the next few years.

I think it's interesting how you never actually talk about football.
We just battered our biggest rivals in their own backyard and all you have done since is moan about contracts, FSG, Hughes and Edwards and now this. It's very odd.

03 Sep 2024 20:24:55
He used to be a CDM, it's another opportunistic masterstroke from hughes.

03 Sep 2024 20:42:46
Thunder, yes I do. Spoken well on slot gravs new position and boy wonder bradley. Plus how we've been performing. Seems there's always a few trigglypuffs on this page. As soon as someone or should i say I say something deemed criticism "all you do is moan or the world is ending".
Get a grip. He's also an average goalkeeper.

Spot on, TB2. Same old mess from the usual suspects.

@Mizer, We signed Ali's successor as the opportunity came to do a deal for the guy who the club deem will be good enuff to replace him.

Or would you prefer we wait till Alison actually leaves before we start looking for his successor in which case, we will have to pay prolly double what we did this season? Get over yourself and back the lad.

03 Sep 2024 21:51:32
@Mizer, a lot of people used / are using a considerable amount of (pointless) worry and anxiety about squad succession I. e. at the moment TAA, VVD and Mo, and what happens next summer. The current trend for worrying about succession seems to have started with the ‘we still haven’t replaced Gina’ gang.

What the club have done with Marmalade, or however you spell his name, is identify a suitable successor for the job in a couple of years. So, rather than pay £70m+ in 2 years when we desperately need a replacement as Ali’s contract is coming to an end and we have to find a replacement under a ile of pressure (and fan outrage) we have taken steps to solve a risk before it becomes a problem and in the process have saved ourselves a massive heap of money and can now have the lad under the wing of out coaching staff to make sure he progresses the way the club want and enable him to reach his full potential.

I hope this goes some way towards answering your original question. Of course, it’s just my opinion and the club might equally just have bought him for a laugh, or because of his name or any other number of reasons….

03 Sep 2024 21:53:15
No oli, i back the best keeper in the world. The other one we signed is half the keeper.

03 Sep 2024 22:07:41
To be fair Mizer doesn’t rate Trent either so I think it’s safe to ignore his analysis of any player really ?.

03 Sep 2024 22:13:09
Don't rise to flakes like MIZER.

03 Sep 2024 23:08:56
Did your brain get in a jam over his name there WDW?

04 Sep 2024 00:31:36
Certainly more of a jam than a pickle, Flash.

Or are you taking the pith?

04 Sep 2024 00:37:23
I agree with you Mizer to an extent. I also back Ali and Marmalade probably is half the keeper Ali is, along with every other keeper in world football.
He'll need replacing at some point. Now we won't need to worry about it. If we had shown this level of foresight with VVD and Salah there would be less concern there.

04 Sep 2024 00:57:44
Mizer is right.

This goal keeper signing for future is most weirdest which no one sane can explain sanely.

Foe entire two windows, we were apparently looking for CM or LCM and you pull a rabbit/ goal keeper signing.

Maybe Walkon79 is right ?.

04 Sep 2024 01:08:57
How's it gone under the radar?

04 Sep 2024 01:46:57
I do agree with Mizer on this. Mamardashvili is a strange signing in an area where we quite strong in. Allison is still young for a keeper and should still be able to play for 4 years minimum at the highest level. Kelleher and Jaros are also both decent keepers and it remains to be seen if Mamar is better than them. The only advantage he has is that he is playing regularly. But yeah, not really needed and we may have been better placed if we had sent Kelleher and/ or Jaros out on loan this season instead if there is a plan to replace Allison next season.

04 Sep 2024 01:47:25
I do think it was the right move by the club buying this Mamardashvili but at the same time I don't understand it. He is for sure one for the future but how long until he becomes our number one? Alisson is still in contract until 2027, it'll put him at 34, he can still easily have a couple if not more years after that! Alisson is the best keeper in the world and the best player we have showing no signs of any decline and I doubt he will any time soon.

Was Mamardashvili told it could be by the end of his contract before he becomes number one for us? or that he's expected to be number two (after Kelleher leaves) until Alisson is done?

Let's just do an example, imagine Trent is given a new contract for 6 years. It's almost like us signing a RB for the future even though Trent is playing fine now and Bradley is there to step in - Just like Kelleher in this case. It'd be a stupid move and everybody would be going daft about it.

No matter what though, good luck to the lad and posts like this from you Mizer aren't warranted. He's never played for us and you're already writing him off. Give it a break mate.

04 Sep 2024 03:56:53
probably just front footing an issue that may appear in a couple seasons when Allison's contract ends. So not a bad thing.

Also, are people so black and white in real life? Like, when you see a caterpillar do you never consider the beautiful butterfly it may turn into?

{Ed001's Note - but Alisson has made it clear that he wants to stay, so why not just extend his contract and not waste 40m on a keeper who can't kick, and so will never be able to play the style of footie we play?}

04 Sep 2024 05:32:29
That made me laugh Flash.

Hear what you are saying about Ali Ed01 but it’s quite possible with the nature of the business that he might have had a change of heart, although obviously I hope not.

04 Sep 2024 06:23:35
His back will be gone by time he joins us anyway the amount of time he’s bending over to pick up the ball from back of net anyway. I’d stick with kell myself.

04 Sep 2024 06:44:56
There is not a keeper in the world who can dislodge Alison from our team. And a happy Alison too years left on his contract . Ludicrous signing absolutely no thought given. Ed2 is right with the flip flopping, they went from Gordon ( we got more left wingers than parliament) to zubimendi then this keeper? No thought process whatsoever it’s like they panicked “got to buy someone “only good thing about it all is it’s showing Hughes an co to be out of there depth.

04 Sep 2024 07:45:44
I think it just protects us if Ali didn’t extend and wants the big bucks of a free transfer . We have a very decent keeper on the books then . If kelleher leaves maybe marma becomes no2 for a year or so under Ali before taking the reins . Who knows it’s all guessing game . Regardless of plans we look very good this season.

{Ed001's Note - we already have a very decent keeper on the books in Jaros.}

04 Sep 2024 09:45:02
People: "why are the club so reactive, now we potentially have to replace 3 world class players in one go which will cost hundreds of millions we don't have".
The club: sign a young GK with a very high ceiling when the opportunity arose to future proof the position.
People:"the club are so dumb, we have the best GK in the world who will definitely play for another 4 years minimum. Why sign anyone"

04 Sep 2024 10:04:15
This is a ridiculous conversation. None of us know what Alisson’s situation is or what he wants to do. None of us know what Kelleher’s situation is or what he wants to do.

Let’s just put a hypothetical situation forward. Kelleher asks to leave to get first team football (and who could blame him? ), Ali could leave at the end of his contract but he’s not made up his mind yet. We manage to persuade Kelleher to stay on for one more season and sign Marm to take his place next season. Then when Ali leaves we have Marm and Jaros to battle it out for the number 1 shirt.

If Ali doesn’t leave then we sell 1 of Jaros or Marm or if Ali is on the wane we still have 2 other good options to step in.

All of a sudden it would make sense. Whatever the reason I’m sure it’s not just that they panicked and bought a keeper for the sake of it.

We criticise them for not succession planning with Salah and VVD and then criticise them for doing exactly that with the keeper. I personally think that a keeper is the most important position on the pitch. A crap keeper will prevent you winning things no matter how good the outfield players are and a great keeper will get you out of jail time and time again.

I’m quite happy for us to sign Marm as I do believe all will become clear even if it doesn’t look to make sense right now.

04 Sep 2024 11:02:40
"No oli, i back the best keeper in the world. The other one we signed is half the keeper. "

That makes no sense at all but carry on.

04 Sep 2024 13:36:28
Does he mean top half or bottom half?

04 Sep 2024 13:55:25
One can never have enough "World Class Players" for any football position in a Squad.

Exceptional start 9 from 9 new manager, new system of playing, things will only improve even further when both team and manager fully implement the new "ethos", which is quite frightening for our rivals.

{Ed001's Note - thank you mate!}

04 Sep 2024 21:25:08
" Onwards and Upwards"-"Thank You" Ed001.

{Ed001's Note - more sort of stumble downwards these days mate!}
