Trent, VVD, Salah are not dead certs for the all-time Liverpool XI team. All time greats are a matter of opinion just as 'who’s the best player in the world' and 'what’s the best club in the world'. we all have our opinions!
Late 70s and early 80s provide a significant volume of the best 11 for me! I for example would put King Kenny as Liverpool’s best player ever by a country mile - he was a joy to watch and even in his twilight player manager years that run off the ball in the 1986 cup final is still my greatest Liverpool watch. But I appreciate that’s my opinion, not fact.
I would also argue it was also harder to replace such a man than any since!
10 Nov 2024 12:53:03
Right, that’s just your opinion and let’s not impose it on the younger generation of fans who has seen different set of players.
Gerrard for me.
10 Nov 2024 13:15:57
My all time Liverpool X1, based on players that I've watched, would be:-
Alisson
Nicol
VVD
Hansen
Lawrenson
Souness
Gerrard
Salah
Sir Kenny Dalglish
Barnes
Rush
I've always struggled with coming up with a full back combination, and a couple of seasons back I would've had Trent in there, with Nicol at left back. Left back is a position where I don't think we've had a truly world class player, in my time of watching. Lawrenson gets in there due to his versatility.
Regards to centre forward it was a toss up between Suarez and Rush. I was swayed by the hatefulness of Suarez, as a person, in him not getting a spot. When it came to sheer playing ability, he was one of the best players I've seen for us.
This is a favourite topic for a pub table and we will all disagree with one another, I know.
10 Nov 2024 13:09:19
Salah and Virgil are in there for me, no issue whatsoever. Salah’s numbers over the seasons he has been here are just unreal . Virgil? just a machine, Rolls Royce of a player, not seen in our team since the great Alan Hansen.
10 Nov 2024 14:03:29
It’s crazy how some of those players being mentioned are from a time where Liverpool and Nottingham Forrest were the best two teams in the Land.
And they still both are now ?.
10 Nov 2024 15:39:10
Does being in an all time 11 actually have any bearing on what the club do or think of them.
Surely the fact they’re in our best 11 this season is what counts.
10 Nov 2024 16:33:21
Rome 77 has it spot on for me from the the players in my lifetime apart from Phil Neil gets in instead of Lawro.
10 Nov 2024 16:42:15
Its should JK, to get in the alltime 11 of the most successful team in the land you have to be pretty decent.
10 Nov 2024 17:19:32
just my opinion but any all time XI has to include Hansen, Gerrard, King Kenny, Barnes and Rush. again, just my opinion.
10 Nov 2024 17:05:37
So if they can’t get in the all time 11 then it’s a no from you in regards to them staying mate?
10 Nov 2024 17:32:24
Oh! Stone! it's good to see you back mate!
10 Nov 2024 17:32:28
Rome’s all time 11 pretty much spot on. Though I would have Robertson or Nicol at left back, Trent or Neal at right back. And possibly Clemence in goal.
Honourable mentions to Whelan, Henderson, Beardsley and Aldridge. And Lawrenson and Carragher.
But it’s quite something that so many of the current era can stake a claim in the all time 11. Alisson, Virgil, Trent, Salah, Robertson all true greats. Henderson and Mane were too.
And if Konate’s upward trajectory continues, then he could be knocking on the door.
10 Nov 2024 17:39:16
Thanks mate. I got drunk and was a complete a$$ to the eds. should have been banned to be honest. Haven't had a drink since January 23.
10 Nov 2024 18:17:12
Well done Stone, it takes a big man to admit his mistakes and an even bigger man to give up alcohol.
I have just done a month alcohol-free, driven by horrific dental surgery and it was tough. Kudos to you.
10 Nov 2024 18:38:42
Trying to pick an all time team just can’t be done. I’m in my late 60’s but just missed watching Billy Liddell a player regarded as good enough to earn the team the name Liddelpooland there were others, notably Elisha Scott, who would probably have a claim. I’m not trying to have a go but the club has been around since 1892 and you could make a case for the very first team being all time greats. Without them we might not be bickering about the need for a DCM or for Nunez to start or not. Given everybody’s age it might be worth calling it the best team since 1975 - 50 years - as, invariably, the picks come from that timeframe.
I’d go with a
Ali
Neal
Lawrenson
Hansen
VVD
Alonso
Gerrard
Barnes
Dalglish
Salah
Rush.
10 Nov 2024 18:58:18
Souness over alonso. Alonso became elite when he left us. His years at Liverpool do not compare to Souness.
10 Nov 2024 19:46:33
I love alonso but souness for me. He was the general of the best midfield in the world at the time. And through sheer force of personality he would have improved Gerrard's game as well.
10 Nov 2024 21:26:40
I have no issues with the original slections having watched them all.
I would like to add a few subs though.
I recently watched a Suarez on Youtube, and I admired how he could score goals out of nothing. Next video up was Robbie Fowlers goals and I then realised that Robbie could also, so he would be one of my subs
Beardsley was a very clever player as was Jari Litmanen although he was only with us for 18 months he made a big impression on me, so he would be my 2nd sub. Goalie Sub Kelleher all day long.
10 Nov 2024 22:21:33
Alisson Trent Virgil Hansen Robbo Souness Gerrard Barnes Salah Dalglish Rush
Subs: Clemence Neal Hughes Nicol Mane
I think sometimes we underappreciate the numbers that Alisson Trent Robbo Virgil Salah and even Mane put up. It’s insane.
11 Nov 2024 00:26:42
Well done Stone mate, onwards and upwards.
11 Nov 2024 00:37:09
How any of you can have this discussion on not include Paul Konchesky is beyond me.
11 Nov 2024 05:38:38
Firmino is one of the best forwards ever to play for the reds in my opinion.
11 Nov 2024 05:39:11
i am amazed not a single person has mentioned Kevin Keegan.
11 Nov 2024 09:10:16
You are right, Telemicus, Keegan nearly always gets overlooked. This is maybe due to the fact the man bought to replace him went on to become an absolute club icon. Also, it can be argued, Keegan went on to have his best years after he left us, becoming European footballer of the year. He was certainly my idol when I first started supporting us but, you are right, he rarely gets a mention. He makes my subs bench.
11 Nov 2024 09:53:46
From what I can see, only two people picked king Kenny?
Very surprised at that.
How about an all time eleven comprised of English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh players?
11 Nov 2024 10:10:32
Clemence
Nicol
Hansen
Lawreson
Neal
Souness
Gerrard
Barnes
Owen ( even though I personally can't stand the smug pr#ck)
King Kenny
And god of course.
11 Nov 2024 10:45:50
For me, on pure ability, 1st and second picks, and at the peak of their powers and having seen them playz which limits me to the 90's onwards.
Ali - Reina
Finnan - Trent
Virgil -
Hyypia - Carragher
Robertson - Riise
Alonso - Redknapp
Fabinho - Mascherano
Barnes - Mane
Gerrard - Coutinho
Salah - Garcia
Suarez - Fowler.
11 Nov 2024 10:46:30
Clemence
Nicol
Hansen
Thompson
Lawrenson
Gerrard
Souness
Barnes
Dalglish
Fowler
Keegan.
11 Nov 2024 11:07:52
Can't believe I left out Rush, replace the smug pr#ck with him.
11 Nov 2024 13:22:34
Stupid me! I too left out Rush. Take out Keegan and replace with Rush!
11 Nov 2024 14:30:24
Fowler in while leaving out Salah, Virg, Alisson and Trent? I loved Fowler but he couldn't make an all time XI, unfortunately. Had he cared for his body better and had Ged not sold him before he reached his peak, he may well have challenged the numbers Rushie put up.
Owen? Coutinho? Riise? Garcia? Good grief.
11 Nov 2024 14:39:20
To be fair to all our players over the seasons i would be more inclined to pick the best lfc squad of 25 players.
11 Nov 2024 15:04:37
FPF, the latest bit of fun was selecting British and Irish born players.
