Top of the Day.
Quick one for Ed001, once again I am talking about Diaz playing through the middle, he has shown he can cause havoc playing the false 9, but i want to know, seeing the Darwin Nunez is not providing the numbers and Firmino played the role of false 9 for a long time, do you think we should look out for a 9 in the market and sell of Darwin or maintain our current setup and look for other positions to reinforce?

{Ed001's Note - I have answered this question a number of times already this season. The thing for me is that Jota can't stay fit and so he is the one that needs to be replaced. If that can be with someone who pushes Nunez out of the picture, along with Danns and Diaz, then we can move him on and replace him. But first, it has to be Jota that is replaced, he just can't be trusted to play enough games in a season imo.}

Agree0 Disagree7

Jota will probably still end up with more goals than Diaz and Nunez.

23 Dec 2024 21:35:32
Nunez won't play enough games because he won't be picked enough times.

23 Dec 2024 21:36:13
I reckon he sees Chiesa as a player who will play down the middle I think he will come up with a couple of big goals this season.

23 Dec 2024 21:49:52
Jota has his work cut out to finish ahead of Diaz, let alone Diaz and Nunez combined.

23 Dec 2024 22:09:53
Really really doubt that Markp08. I think Nunez will go on a scoring run soon!

23 Dec 2024 22:11:17
It’ll be nice to see all the forwards contribute with goals for the rest of the season.

I think Salah can get 25 plus and Diaz is already into double figures and Gakpo is only 1 off.

I think Jota will get Into double figures and hopefully Nunez as well.

Chiesa is a tough one as he’s not making league match day squads at the moment.

23 Dec 2024 22:43:20
Jota probably spends too much time playing video games and staying up late. Won’t be doing his recovery any good at all sitting rigid for hours and not getting a good nights sleep. The most recent injury was bad luck getting clattered in his ribs, but he gets way too many injuries. Diaz is looking like a pretty good number 9 this season anyway. Probably is time to replace Jota. Shame because when fit and in form he’s bloody brilliant.

23 Dec 2024 23:03:08
A lot's said about Jota and his obsession with video games. If I remember right, wasn't there a competition some years back, when he was at Wolves, when the final was between him and Trent. Jota won. Just saying.

23 Dec 2024 23:14:12
Mk there’s a lot of assumptions there mate about how long Jota plays video games and what time he’s up until. I’m pretty sure he’s got a newborn or two in the house as well.

Last season Jota suffered one muscle injury and then another impact injury from a challenge in the Brentford game where he ended up with knee collateral ligament tear.

Nunez probably has the biggest fan fair out of the two but from looking from outside to in from only a small amount of time it appears that Slot trusts Jota more.

I might be wrong but that’s how it looks to me mate.

23 Dec 2024 23:41:08
Boils my p*ss the team doing great atm partly due to Nunez involvement he’s running his socks off being involved for the team. Diaz had a great game against spurs but it was SPURS, everyone did. Be careful what you wish for.

24 Dec 2024 00:19:18
Slot has a track record of getting the best of players, getting them to elevate their game. If he can get best out of Nunez and Chiesa I don't think we will have much to worry about whatever occurs with injuries, comings or goings. I love Jota, always have, always comes up with a goal when needed, but if our front 6 were all playing at their absolute best I don't think he makes the bench, let alone the first 11.

24 Dec 2024 01:10:27
There were accounts on when Jota was online for a FIFA game the night before a game a few seasons back when he first joined us. So, it's not an assumption that Jota was using time that he should be using for rest and recovery on gaming. Not saying that he shouldn't be playing games at all, but he is a highly paid professional and he should have been taking care of himself more.

Granted, his last few injuries have been impact ones instead of muscle injuries so that account may be outdated, and he could be taking better care of himself now.

24 Dec 2024 04:49:04
Let’s face it, Jota is injured too much. Whether it is luck, leisure or lethargy.

He scores when he plays but first and foremost he is paid to play. And all too often he doesn’t play.

24 Dec 2024 07:26:04
Ok Drac I was unaware of that mate and when searching google or other search engines nothing comes up about Jota gaming through the nights.

Perhaps it was a one off, perhaps not, perhaps the accounts were click bait like every other supposed journo report.

My main point stands though that i hope all the forwards contribute with plenty of goals for the remainder of the season.

24 Dec 2024 07:39:06
I’d take Jota over Nunez every day of the week.

24 Dec 2024 07:42:51
Scouse John 100% the team are doing great mate.

And Nunez is part of that. But so is every other player. Teams been doing great with him in and out of the team.

24 Dec 2024 07:43:16
Exactly that Dracred, I think he was actually dropped for that game in question. Also, anybody who's ever gamed will know that you don't get that good to be able play in and win e-tournaments, unless you're pouring hours into it as a hobby. You can't just pick up a controller once a week for a few hours and then mix it up with the worlds best gamers.

JK23, I think a lot of modern footballers play video games mate so I'm not having a go at Jota. They're young men after all and Jota can do what he wants with his free time ultimately. I only gave up gaming very recently and I'm 30. But he gets a lot of injuries and hobbies where you sit still are not great for your muscles, especially after a game so it's not a huge leap. It is an assumption though, you're right. I'm only speculating on a discussion site after all mate! I also agree that Slot trusts Jota more than Nunez. As I said, when he is fit he's brilliant. I wouldn't really care which of the two made way, but I do still believe we need a striker who can score goals and stay fit.

24 Dec 2024 07:59:20
Not combined but out of the three I reckon Jota gets the most goals and the most important goals. As for Nunez we have waited a long time for this scoring run. It’s highly unlikely.

24 Dec 2024 08:24:21
We need to replace Jota because he "probably spends too much time playing video games".
For real?
That's along the same lines as getting rid of Diaz "because his Dad spoke to someone".
What a strange notion.

24 Dec 2024 08:33:57
I understand people are frustrated by Jota's injury record but do we need to make up reasons for it and use them to question his professionalism?
I try to look at what is actually happening. As things stand, Slot prefers Jota and Diaz as the nine or false nine to Nunez; especially in the bigger games. I like Nunez and his attitude but his goal return is poor and he is inconsistent. If we went on to win the League with Nunez as a nine and he didn't score another goal I would commend him for his role in a successful team system. 100%.
I must say that what I like about Diaz as a false nine is the fluidity it gives us. It seemed to suit Szoboszlai, too. They both work very hard and can interchange and it must be hard for the opposition to handle.
I do feel that Slot will want a new number nine or false nine though. He's done brilliantly with what he's inherited but I can't help thinking he'll want his own player in there.

24 Dec 2024 09:34:37
Cheers for the reply Mk and it is all opinions.

I can’t imagine a club as professional as Liverpool under Klopp and Slot allowing any players to take shortcuts with their preparation and recovery away from the pitch.

The thing we do know though is Jota’s last muscle injury was in March 2023 and he’s had 3 impact injuries since (knee, hip and ribs) .

I really like Nunez and Jota. I think both have a large part to play this season but if I had to place a bet on which one scores the most it would be Jota.

That doesn’t mean he will though and Darwin might even go on this big scoring run we are all hoping for.

24 Dec 2024 09:51:15
If the question is …. Do we have a world class centre forward at the club then the answer is ‘no’. Jota and Nunez both have their qualities but neither of them has what Slot seems to want for the way he wants his CF to play. The fact that we have seen Jota, Nunez, Diaz, Gakpo and Szoboszlai all playing the (false) CF role, and I image Danns will join the list before the end of the season suggests that we may look for a more permanent CF, from outside of the club, than we currently have.

24 Dec 2024 09:59:16
It’s the same players year in year out injured. Slots biggest challenge will be in the transfer market, it’s obvious he’s a brilliant manager, can he build on this under the restrictions of FSG?

24 Dec 2024 10:51:21
So when Jota isn't playing video games, I imagine he is constantly running on the spot or doing star jumps like other professional athletes who don't play video games.

24 Dec 2024 14:22:51
Jota you would imagine, would score more but only if fit - and that's a big 'if' given his record at Liverpool. We can speculate towards why, but it is what it is and he simply does not stay fit enough does he?

Nunez is a real connundrum isn't he? All the attributes you'd want from a stiker - great attitude, never stops pressing or running and quick as hell and works so hard - but, simply does not score enough

Out of the two though, i'd keep Nunez and sell Jota - purely on availability. I like Nunez myself, he needs to score more, but I do like what he brings to the team and love his work rate

I do see Slot trying to get another striker - we've discussed it before, some names have come up and I remember being concerned about Isak's injury record when he was suggested, but a friend pointed out just how many games he has played ion the last two seasons so are his injuries behind him? Good finisher, would he suit us? Could we afford him?

Though I do believe it is a CB and another midfield to rotate with Grav we need more - not sure why Endo does not get many minutes tbh, some games look tailor made for him tbf.

24 Dec 2024 15:35:24
Flash, what are you on about? I never said we should get rid of him for a start. I said it *probably* is time to *replace* him because of *injuries*. 3 key points there and you managed to miss them all. All I said on the video gaming is it *probably* won’t be helping the injuries if he’s playing them excessively. Thanks for the paraphrasing though, troll ?

JK23, I think I was the first person on here to put Jota forward as a player we should sign a few years ago. I rate him so highly and he is only behind Salah in terms of his numbers for us in recent years per 90 minutes. Sadly we just can’t build a team around a number 9 who misses half the season with injury. I think he needs to put the injuries behind him ASAP or the club will likely start looking to the market for a striker. There’s seemingly genuine interest in at least a couple of strikers (Pedro, Marmoush etc) . Like you say though, Jota’s been mainly suffering impact injuries of late. So things might turn for him if he can put a run of 30 games together without injury until the end of the season. He has the talent.

24 Dec 2024 16:22:30
I’m with you flash. It’s all speculation.

The reality is Jota is a better player than Nunez. I think we need to stop expecting Darwin to turn into what we all hoped he would. He just isn’t kicking on IMO.

I’ll say that I would actually be very surprised if Nunez is still playing for us next season.
