Watching last night's game . I thought we was a bit rushed with our football, like in the Klopp era, once we scored we calmed down n played a lot better . Gakpo n Robbo had great games . What do we do with Nunez, the fan base love him, he works hard n he keeps trying but just not happening for him in front of goal. not sure if it's pure confidence or he just not up to what we all want. come the end of the season we will have to make a big decision about him.

Agree5 Disagree0

27 Dec 2024 15:35:52
I think Nunez will still be here next season. Fingers crossed.

27 Dec 2024 16:13:30
Easy decision tbh. 80 mill on a striker who doesn't score means cut our losses and buy a striker who does score. The amount of chances he misses makes the decision easy.

27 Dec 2024 16:45:02
Nunez could have got a hat trick last night.

The positive in it all is he’s still getting into positions to get chances despite the narrative with some that he doesn’t get any.

27 Dec 2024 17:08:55
2 years left on his contract come next summer, which will show us what how the club sees his future.
Salah named him as his second favourite ever to play with.

27 Dec 2024 17:21:55
Hopefully Nunez will be moved on in the summer, fingers crossed.

27 Dec 2024 17:36:33
Whilst I understand people’s frustrations and concerns with Nunez’s scoring, I do prefer to have the goals spread across the team as we do now instead of depending on one player to score most goals, as man city with haaland, and I think that Nunez plays his part in that with his work rate and selfless runs. He’s also rarely injured. If we could upgrade, I would, but I think there’s more urgent needs to be addressed.

27 Dec 2024 17:45:24
For years fans moaned over not having a plan B. We now have a front 5 who all have different strengths and can change a shape/ plan/ formation during games if plan A is not working. Darwin brings a lot to the team, the lad is a nuisance he doesn’t stop running, closing down, creates space, his passing and teamwork has improved dramatically. And he chips in with a near miss and odd goal. Be careful what you wish for. I think if he was on the market now Arsenal Utd an Chelsea would be interested. He is better than anyone they got.

27 Dec 2024 17:54:57
Better than Cole Palmer, Scouse John? Hmm, let me think about that one.

27 Dec 2024 17:57:47
Spot on John, some people just don't see it. If we lost him we'd know about it.

27 Dec 2024 17:59:17
What does the striker bring to the team as well as goals?

We won the league with 99 points clear by 18 points. Four players that season scored over 20 league goals. None of them were ours. Our “no 9” scored just 9 goals (wasn’t even in the top 25) and yet Bobby was such a vital part of that team.

I am not comparing Darwin to Bobby and I am not excusing some often poor finishing. However, it’s clear that Darwin is being asked to link up the play a lot more this season and he’s doing a really good job of it when he’s playing.

Yes he does need to be more clinical but if he can make himself important to the way we play and so long as that bring success I couldn’t care if he scores 10 goals a season or 30.

27 Dec 2024 18:10:47
Regarding the performance I think it was a tale of two halves. We showed them too much respect in the first half by playing to Leicesters strengths. The amount of crosses into the box was lazy.
Second half we smothered them like we should have from the off. Suffocating a poor team into submission and won comfortably.

27 Dec 2024 18:19:36
I thought he played very well yesterday particularly in the second half.

It does get a bit annoying when it’s always him that gets targeted after games. It has now come to a point where it doesn’t matter what he does he will be criticised in some quarters.

I get why he can be frustrating at times but his attitude is second to none. He keeps going no matter what and gets the crowd up which in turn drags the team up a notch.

I love the guy. I can’t really think of anyone I’d swap him for right now.

27 Dec 2024 18:21:01
People do realise that Darwin has only played in 47% of the Premier league minutes for us this season.

We must have really rode our luck the other 53% of minutes.

I like Nunez and I do hope he stays and finds his scoring boots but I also know from watching the team that we aren’t sat top of the league because he runs a lot and links up our play. Christ every one of our players runs a lot and links up the play and they do it in far more than 47% of our games.

27 Dec 2024 18:49:29
Just on the subject of last nights game I’ve seen it suggested that we were trying to copy arsenals corners in the first half.

Can someone please enlighten me on what we were trying to do as I don’t watch Arsenal and they didn’t come off for us.

27 Dec 2024 19:13:28
I just saw that as well JK.

27 Dec 2024 19:24:04
We set up for the corner as Arsenal do but fell short because we actually tried to get in positions to head the ball rather than just block and grab players.

Then it was all pretty much a waste anyway as Trent didn’t beat the first man lol.

27 Dec 2024 19:32:24
@Rome1977: maybe not but he’s better than Jackson.

27 Dec 2024 19:40:00
Nunez has all the attributes to succeed, he just needs to apply himself. My only worry with him would be his returns seem to be lowering not improving. 15 goals in his first season, 18 last season and I believe 3 so far this season at the halfway point. Yes he hasn't played as much but come on, do we really think slot rates him when he has preferred to play a winger in the 9 position? Personally I hope that he gets a bag full between now and May and stays to become a mainstay of our post Salah attack, but practically I reckon he'll be gone in the summer.

{Ed001's Note - does he prefer to play Diaz there or is he simply rotating the forwards to keep them fresh during a long, hard season? You have to remember, the other two choices for that position, Jota and Danns, were both out injured. So Slot either ran Nunez into the ground, knowing how hard he works off the ball etc, or he finds a solution to rotate him, which has been Diaz. It also allows him to give Gakpo more minutes when he is playing so well, without having to drop Diaz, who is also playing particularly well.}

27 Dec 2024 20:05:12
Fair enough Ed001, that's a good point. Don't get me wrong I do like Nunez and want him to do well because I still believe there is a real top class striker in their somewhere, I just see Slot working wonders getting a better tune out of these players than the management team did last season, the whole team, almost to a man, except perhaps Nunez. I hope I'm wrong.

{Ed001's Note - yeah, he is the one outlier I agree. But he has never shown himself to be a quick learner, so maybe it is just taking time to click for him.}

27 Dec 2024 21:13:16
Ed01, Im not sure our system works with an out an out no. 9 so it seems like Slot is coaching Darwin to be more than just a no. 9 hence, asking him to do a whole lot more than just stand in one place waiting/ hoping for the ball/ chance to come to him. And since he has such a great mentality (and the qualiries) and is willing to do whatever it takes for us to win (just like Bobbie did, btw), he excels at it.

IMO, our goals mainly come from our wide players and from midfield which means our CF (Jota or Nunez) is the CF that our wide men bounce things off of hence, their linkup play has to be on point which Darwin is good at for the most part.

IMO, Maybe people need to consider what Slot is actually asking his CF's to do rather than project their opinions on what they think the CF's should do. Just saying.

27 Dec 2024 21:25:50
I’m a big fan of Nunez in terms of his effort and general chaotic nature however people comparing him to Bobby is a bit lazy, Bobby wasn’t a 20 goal a season striker but his link up play and pressing was top level. This isint an attack on Nunez but let’s be real he is nowhere near Bobby level in those areas and unfortunately he is nowhere near the 20 goal a season player either so what is he?

Love the guy to bits and really wanted him to do well but the sample size is there for all to see and if we want to be challenging for titles now and in the future ( post Salah) we need our strikers to be clinical not nuisances. He reminds me slightly of Divok, you always want them to do well, a fan favourite but ultimately you know that they are not quiet at the level we need.

27 Dec 2024 21:44:44
“Maybe people need to consider what Slot is actually asking his CF's to do rather than project their opinions on what they think the CF's should do”

Oli how do you know what Slot wants the centre forwards to do? Or are you just projecting your opinion.

27 Dec 2024 22:12:09
I do enjoy Nunez but if an offer comes in we need to take the money. If we can find a decent priced striker we will win the next two leagues after this one in my opinion.

27 Dec 2024 22:20:46
I’d have no objections to Nunez staying as a squad player as I do think he could play across the front 3 positions but I don’t think he would/ should want to be back up so if the money comes in then I think we take it! He can still go on and have a very successful career for himself and may thrive in another league, premier league is quiet unique and a tough gig so maybe the German or Italian league would suit him more.

27 Dec 2024 23:35:37
Ed1 what's your opinion on Nunez. stick by him or move him on next season and bring in someone who is more productive.

{Ed001's Note - I have answered this so many times in the last few days. The first priority is to replace Jota as he can't stay fit.}

28 Dec 2024 00:15:55
JK23, I don't know what Slot is asking him to do. What I do know is that Darwin is doing very diff. things than what he was being asked to do at Benfica and with the Uruguayan national team.

Out there according to a podcast I watched by a Benfica fan when we first signed him, Darwin was THE guy to score the goals. He was allowed freedom to roam the front line popping up on the right and esp. on the left to assist and score. Essentially, the whole team worked for him. Same goes for his time with Uruguay under Bielsa.

That is clearly NOT happening here based on what we can see and others have noticed it as well. They don't know what Slot is asking him to do either, do they? We are all giving our opinions based on what we are seeing hence, we would do better by trying to understand what Slot wants from him or Jota first.

28 Dec 2024 01:09:10
I am with Dow-ney.

We all like Nunez and want him to succeed but unfortunately its not working for him with us.

Feel he might still master PL if he played for other team (mid to lower rank) with him as primary focus man or he can try other league.

He is not at Bobby's level (intelligence wise) but has his own attributes.

If (BIG) there is an offer, wise option is to accept and move on which is best for all.

28 Dec 2024 07:07:57
Oli So after telling people they shouldn’t project their opinions on the matter you’re now admitting that everyone including yourself is just projecting their opinions on the matter.

And on an opinion site as well. Who would have thought that’s what we did.

28 Dec 2024 08:21:17
I’m literally losing the will to live reg fans and nunez.
The lad has been with us for 21/ 2 years and he’s done nothing.
Ok he runs about but he can’t
Use his pace
Always offside
Awful first touch
Can’t link play
Can’t finish
Now you can all have opinions but that is fact his numbers prove it.
Now we get to the important time of season and the deciding games ( semi or finals and title winning games ) and he’s Just missed yet another sitter and costs us Nunez Nunez lovers won’t be on here then saying he runs about.

28 Dec 2024 08:49:58
Kopites1 did Nunez miss a sitter against Leicester? I don’t recall but might have missed it. Often I read fans slating him saying he missed a sitter on here when in reality they are half chances, ie the Girona game.

Nunez is a Torres type of striker, in that he is at his best running in behind into space. The way teams defend and we build up doesn’t really suit that so he needs to adapt his game. I thought overall, Nunez was ok against Leceister, at times his link up play was good and he played a vital role with the ball retrieval for Jones’ goal.

Yes, I would like to see him score more goals, but he really isn’t getting many chances compared to last season and he is clearly having to adapt his game again. He is playing in a time that has its attacking threat built around its wide-men.

I can understand the frustrations, I do get annoyed at times too, but he is contributing.

28 Dec 2024 09:26:23
Todd
He was completely out of the game that’s why he always gets dragged off.
This has been going on for way to long now
And he will cost us.
We know slot don’t like him anyways so it done matter let’s get to summer get what we can and move on.

28 Dec 2024 09:46:18
Nunez had 3 good chances and a half chance.

Gakpo had 3 chances. He scored 2 and blazed one over.

Mo also had 3 chances and scored one, missed one and keeper saved one.

28 Dec 2024 10:09:13
Nunez's finishing has never been that good. He did score 3 against us whilst at Benfica but their fans did warn us that was wasn't a finisher. What he does do is occupy defenders and help create space for other players.
It's unfortunate how much we paid for him as you'd expect a complete player for that feel. If we'd picked him up for 20m then he'd get a less scrutiny imo.

28 Dec 2024 14:25:17
When has a near miss been chipping in?

What would you do with Nunez? Would you offer him a new contract as he enters his last two years? Would you be prepared to pay big wages to a number 9 that doesn't score goals or play like a classic number 10?
I'm asking this remembering that a lot of fans were prepared to take the money for Salah, a player that has delivered year after year for us.

It's just my feeling that Slot prefers Jota and Diaz as the 9 or false 10 in the bigger games than Nunez.
I don't think the club will hang onto Nunez or offer him a new contract because some of us are predicting and hoping that he will start to score goals. If he starts to score or if he starts regularly, then fine, but to me he's running out of time and new contract negotiations pull.
