I'm having a think at the minute. What's your best ever Liverpool team? It's 77/ 78 for me, there's no beating it. Let's go on your age as well, what's the best team you have seen in your time? Some youngsters may well say the season of 19/ 20 is their best Liverpool team, the list goes on.

We've had tons of good teams over the years but for me nothing beats the 77/ 78 team.

One thing I feel has changed over the years is passion and the determination they had, the lads back then had that passion but these days it's not there as much, it's not gone but it's nothing like it used to be because of money in my opinion. Back then it was a sport and now it's a business. I dread to think what it'll be like in 10-20 years from now but we get on with it. Lots has changed over the years but one thing that'll never change is my/ our love for Liverpool.

Lots of talk about contracts and new signings for ages now from myself and most people here, it's a weird period we're in because we have every right to be excited but at the same time we have every right to be concerned. Lots of changes are coming and I'm not too sure the changes are going to be good ones because none of us know something that hasn't happened yet.

I think when we're concerned we can easily be misinterpreted because it's online but we all want the same thing, that's what matters more than anything. We agree, we disagree, it is what it is. It'd be a boring website if we all agreed, it'd also be boring if we were winning every single game, sounds stupid I know but it would be.

Liverpool don't do things the easy way and after a few off results I find it more exciting as daft as it may sound, the gap is closing but I do fully believe we'll win the league and something else. We just have to believe and what will be next season will be.

Point of the matter is, enjoy - this is the entertainment part of our life and no matter what Liverpool will always be special to the majority of us whether we're winning every single trophy at the top or if we're 7th in the league.

77/ 78 team was obviously great but I don’t really remember that era. The early eighties teams were also top class. The Barnes, Beardsley team could well be regarded higher if they were allowed to dominate Europe as they surely would have.

Can’t remember the 77/ 78 as I was only 4, my favourite team was probably the 87/ 88 team when Beardsley, Barnes and Aldo were tearing it up and we’re a joy to watch. Shame that team never got to play in Europe as they would have taken some stopping to add to European cups.

Good question salah. i started supporting lfc in 1986,1st game I can remember watching is 86 cup final v everton. Best team I've seen is the 18-20 side, absolutely outstanding team who had bit of everything from all angles.
87-89 team brilliant to watch as well and maybe better squad depth than 18-20 side but I think vvd+ali in the defence swings it for me.

Good post, Salah, though we finished runners up to Forest in 77/ 78. Do you mean the 76/ 77 team, which is where my username comes from?

My favourite team is between the 87/ 88 and 19/ 20 teams.

17 Jan 2025 17:49:16
83/ 84. They could play a bit, but if you wanted a scrap they could give you that too. Nearly won the lot.

17 Jan 2025 17:58:35
Not necessary the best team, in fact far from it. But something about 17/ 18 felt special. After so many false dawns you just knew this was different, the way we destroyed City in Europe and those 7-0s we dished out etc. The aura Jurgen had in the first part of his tenure

It didn’t even feel like hope, it was more than that. It felt like a certainty we were about to do something great. Losing that final the way we did should’ve felt horrible (and I did for a few days don’t get me wrong ?) . But I just knew we’d be back. Can’t put my finger on exactly what it was but it was some ride.

Been a good few elite Liverpool teams . loved the 70s one but still bit young to remember clearly. but the 84 team had a bit of everything, could mix it up or play great football. then the 87 version but all these teams had desire n belief aswel as the skill set .

I only have vague memories pre 1980 mainly crying when Terry Mcdermot left, but early 80’s where great teams Rush Molby Johnson etc, I agree the Barnes Beardsley Aldridge team and the Klopp 19/ 20 champions league and prem winning team on pure at times breath tacking football top it for me, and agree the Barnes Beardsley team would of dominated Europe too, but at a push those two for me, the best of a very good bunch. But as i say to my lad, life has its ups and downs but over time the redmen won't let you down…. his 15 now, so thus far he can’t ague with me……although he hasn't had his Ronnie Rosenthal. years yet.

87-89 team for me. what a team.

17 Jan 2025 19:48:51
The team of Barnes, Beardsley, Aldo, McMahon etc were some outfit. The 5-0 drubbing they gave out to Notts Forest must be the most complete game of football I have ever watched. Could literally have been 10-0 . The best Liverpool team for me.

Bill Shanklys team that won the FA Cup for the first time in clubs history 1965, all on the same wages of circa £30 pound a week. Played for each other and the love of the club.

17 Jan 2025 20:03:32
Yeah I'd go with late 70s team. first match I ever went to was LFC v Oulu in 1980. European Cup.10-1.MC Dermott and Souness got hat tricks. I even remember MC Dermott trying a Scorpion kick. just cracking memories from a great match. me dad said to a 10 year old me, don't expect that score every game.!

I’m with Rome again. I loved both. 30 years apart. Both teams gave you same feeling when watching them. Only football can do that.

17 Jan 2025 20:41:18
Lots of great Liverpool teams, the most recent Premiership/ CL winning team would be in with a shout, having watched Liverpool since the early 70’s, I feel the league winning teams during the era when English clubs were banned from Europe really missed out on greatness, I think the Barnes/ Beardsley/ Houghton team would have won more European cups when they were in their prime. But for me, it was the team that beat Roma in the EC.

Just as an aside to a great thread, which player from former Pool great teams would you love to have in today’s team?

For me, it would be one Greame Souness, what a player he was, better than Roy Keane. A combination of skill, leadership and nastiness that would be a £150m player today. Of course he wouldn’t get away today with the bone crunching tackles he used to dish out in his prime, but he would adapt to todays game.

19/ 20 was our 3rd best under Klopp I reckon. We didn’t even play that well in half the games we won everything just seemed to go our way? although I think we could have won the treble if Adrian didn’t make those mistakes in the CL and Fa cup in the same week. Season before in 18/ 19 we got a point less but won the CL and played better. 21/ 22 despite not winning either of the big 2 funnily enough I think was our best under Jurgen.

17 Jan 2025 21:36:10
Joe Fagan’s team. 83/ 84 season. Unbelievable team.

17 Jan 2025 21:58:16
If we had Barnes, Nicol or Souness or Gerard we would have the league by now. Probably prime Robbo as well. Not all of them, just any one of them.

17 Jan 2025 22:07:16
Souness is a good shout, D-day. My favourite all time player is Barnes, but Souness is what's needed more in today's team.

17 Jan 2025 22:33:01
Jordan Simon, Prime Souness would be the one. He was a proper centre midfielder.

Good question to pose Salah. I started following the pool in 1977. Steve Heighway was my idol even at the end of his career. European cup final 1978 was definitely a better team than 1977 IMO - the 3 Scots raised the bar for me.

In 84 Rush and Dalglish were the perfect partnership up front but the midfield (Lee, Johnston, Whelan and Souness) may not have been as good as 1978 (McDermott, Case, Souness and Kennedy) .

Finally hard to look past the 2019 side with Mane, Salah and Firmino up front and Virgil imperious in defence. Also had the best goalkeeper of all the sides in Alison. And Trent and Robbo were assist machines. Maybe it’s fading memory but the 19 side for me was the best - just about. Didn’t win as much but was outstanding.

{Ed025's Note - im a massive fan of Alisson Jonbon, and i dont know if you seen Ray Clemence play mate?...but for me ray was better than Becker..

18 Jan 2025 00:33:03
That's an excellent points about the 78 and 84 midfields, Jonbonone.
Btw, going off your name, are you a horse racing fan, mate?

17 Jan 2025 19:38:20
Ed1 + ed25 + other eds what would your opinion be on salahs question? Be interesting to hear your opinions if use had time.

{Ed025's Note - i was a big fan of the Keegan and Toshack days when i was young Digger, and then the 80,s team with the likes of Rush and Dalglish were a really good watch, its so hard to compare era,s though mate and the 19/20 season under Klopp was superb to watch, but for me the 30 year slump you had were probably the most memorable.. :)
