What made everyone start supporting Liverpool. For me, it was when my grandfather was a caretaker of a crown court in liverpool in the 70s.

I started reading about English football during the early to mid 70's, in any magazines I could find. And occasionally watching a game or two on TV. But it was Kevin Keegan and his destruction of Berti Vogts "the bulldog", during the European Cup final against Borussia Moenchengladbach that sealed it for me. Have been a supporter ever since.

For me it simply was how good the team of the eighties were. Used to watch and go to a lot of football games with my dad who was a massive Leeds fan. I was just blown away by how good they played, and obviously won a lot.

I'm from somewhere in Asia, so I'm not like most of you guys started supporting coz of family etc.
Occassionally I read mags and news about BPL (back then was Barclays), and then I managed to watch a match (I forgot which one, but Kuyt was playing along with Torres) . I got hooked with Liverpool because of these two. 2008, I subscribed with a satellite TV, football channels were part of the package. Been following Liverpool ever since. Around the same year I found this site too (back then was footballrumours)

I'm an 80s baby. I recall watching mcmanaman having a mazy run against celtic I don't remember the game or score but the run and the all red kit and that was me.
Best decision I ever made!

There was a team playing on tv and I was only 5 so I asked my brother who are they and he said they're Liverpool. So I asked are they any good and he said they're the best team in the world and that was that.

My big brothers did so I did. We're scottish ao they liked the connections aswell.
Basically didn't have a choice.

Growing up in NZ I had 3 options on a Sunday morning show I think called Big League Soccer
Arsenal, Manchester United or our beloved Liverpool
Basically John Barnes was making a effortless stylish run and I was hooked
Thank you John
Wembley here we come

My father supported them!

I was living in Burnley at about 7 and knew feck all about football as my dad didn't follow it. I was one day asked who I supported and I knew enough not to say York, where I was born, as I did know them to be rubbish, and everyone knew I wasn't from Burnley. So I picked the first place that came into my head. Would have been about 1983 at the time, so I randomly picked well.

I was born within the sounds of a cheering Goodison. My dad was a red, mum didn't care, sister worked for Bill Kenwright, brother was on the books of Liverpool early days, my cousin is Mike Marsh. I was wowed by Shankly and loved the team of the late 70s early 80s, so it was a no brainer for me.
Moved to Australia in 91 when we were champions. Didn't win the league again for 30 years. Unbelievable.
07 Feb 2025 07:14:19
My dad and grandad went to the match and started taking me when I was 4, back in the early 60’s - being a fan just grew inside me. Can’t remember a time when I wasn’t a fan.
07 Feb 2025 07:22:25
Born in 1980, my cousin is 7 years older and a huge Liverpool fan so he got me supporting Liverpool
My mum was a big Utd fan and never forgave my cousin for that haha - I owe him big time myself lol
Redscarface, that goal was at Parkhead in Europe - finished 2-2 - was around 97 I think, I watched it with a mate who is a huge Celtic fan lol.

Kenny Dalglish was signed when i turned 7. Still my favorito player of all time.
07 Feb 2025 07:30:01
Mid eighties started watching them can't remember exactly why but my dad a big supporter so probably because he was I copied.
Absolutely fell in love with the football produced by the 87 team of barnes, aldo etc . Completely hooked then!

Growing up in Sweden during the 90s, everybody was cheering for United because they won everything, but I never got hooked on them. During the 97-98 season, there was just something about that Liverpool team that got me excited. It was a combination of the up coming stars Owen and Gerrard, mixed with really exciting and skilful players like McManaman. And what about Fowler? A pure goalscorer, something we lack today.

Back in '75 I was being babysat by a neighbour. I fell over in the street and ripped a hole in my brand new jeans - she sewed a LFC patch over it and said it would be fine because my parents support Liverpool.
Turned out my mum and dad were actually Man U fans. Perfect!
07 Feb 2025 07:44:18
I'm from Asia as well so like Haizan, it wasn't because of family. Heck, my father and uncles are all Utd supporters. One uncle is even a West Ham fan but we don't talk about him much ?
Anyway, it's a bit clichéd but I became a fan after the 2005 CL Final :)
07 Feb 2025 08:00:56
My dad is an Everton fan despite having spent all his years in Scotland, so when I started following football I thought it would be good for the banter. Plus, I loved me some spice boys!
07 Feb 2025 08:11:09
The traditional way. it's who my dad supported. Being local helps too, unless you're a bit thick and support Everton or Tranmere.

Bill Shankly.
Similar background from Scottish villages where life was based on hard work. doing with out and community spirit.

Beardsley and Barned. Loved that keegan was the manager and loved reading about how he was a player before taking the reins.
{Ed001's Note - Keegan?}
07 Feb 2025 09:05:11
My dad bought me my first kit - that was it.
07 Feb 2025 09:06:12
My Papa was of Irish decent and moved across settling in Formby.
As a kid in the 90's - 00's staying with him every weekend in order to go to the games with him and my father, there was nothing more special.
Unfortunately after his passing and I grew up, made a career for myself, life has caused me to live elsewhere and like most getting a ticket today is near on impossible. I would love nothing more than to take my girls and their Papa to Anfield to experience the magic. Maybe then they would understand why every weekend for 90 minutes Daddy becomes a little kid again ?.

My sister was dating a scouser when I was 10. I'm from the Weymouth/ Portland area, so no connection to Liverpool and my dad was a Utd fan. Never had any interest in football. Went around my sisters partners house with her and watched Liverpool vs Chelsea in the 02/ 03 season. Owen scored a 90th minute winner. The elation I felt from something I thought I had no interest in was mind-blowing. Loved them ever since.

Born in ‘71. Wanted to support the local team (Crystal Palace) and my Dad said “No, they don’t play football”. He gave me two options, Forest because he liked Clough and Liverpool because that is where his family landed after leaving Ireland.
I had a 50/ 50 chance of picking the right team. Got a Hitachi kit for Christmas and a pair of Puma Kings on my following birthday and that was it!

I’m similar to Ron Keague. My great uncle bought me my first strip when I was 4yo. Red Hitatchi kit in around 1978. It helped that I’m Scottish and we had the King, Souness and Hansen. I don’t support a Scottish team at all.
07 Feb 2025 10:25:55
I started supporting them when i watched the 78 fa cup final even though Man Utd won Liverpool were my team from then.
07 Feb 2025 10:46:01
Early 80's, used to watch a pprogramme called Big League Soccer which was like a MOTD type show and there was this team in all red that won games for fun so I started supporting LFC.
My fav. player back then was Craig Johnston cos he showed so much grit and determination and seemed to have the ball all the time cos many of his crosses resulted in goals. Go figure.
Thzn, I watched us in the '84 CL final vs Roma and we won on pens. and BOOM went the dynamite.
07 Feb 2025 10:49:23
I was born in 84 in South London and with no dad around or family telling me who to support I got recruited by my neighbour who was half scouse half catalan and supported both Liverpool and Barcelona. I could go round as a kid and watch games and old vhs of Liverpool. All went a bit wrong when souness took over. Got the 91 Dark Green Addidas Candy shirt for Christmas and never looked back. First game I went to was away against Wimbledon when Owen scored his first senior goal.

My Dads mate and neighbour was a Blue season ticket holder in the 60s . He asked my Dad to a match at Goodison and for me to along. Hated it. I watched the reds, cried my eyes out when we lost to the gooners in 71 was red and always will be. Y. N. W. A.

In the 70's in the part of the US lived, it was very difficult to get information on european football. There was a family who moved to our town from Southampton and brought me Shoot magazines and absolutely LOVED reading about Kevin Keegan. Then my father told me that an ancestor immigrated to the US from Liverpool and that sealed the deal.

I grew up in India with limited football telecast in the 80s and 90s, but I played for the youth teams of some good clubs (East Bengal), and liked soccer.
Finally got my hands on fifa 98 as the first soccer game on my first computer. And I just loved playing with Fowler. It was between Liverpool and Wales to play using Fowler - and Liverpool it has been since :-)
The treble in the Houllier era helped cement it.

Great answers people. I was the only one in my family to support Liverpool . Parents and brothers are united fans. Fools.
08 Feb 2025 07:41:10
my mum was born in Liverpool (Lived on Ince Ave, stones throw from Anfield) immigrated to Australia in the 70's. The rest is history.

My Grandparents are from Breck Road and my Grandad supported Liverpool (his brother was a Blue so I got lucky! ) .
I was born on the Wirral and both of my parents were Liverpool fans and my dad had a season ticket. He took me to my first game in ‘83 against West Ham and Paul Walsh scored after about 40 seconds. That was it, done but I had no choice really. I was born a red.
We had that season ticket until 1995 when I moved to London. So wish I’d kept it!
