Just been watching the FA Cup all day and it got me thinking, how much money would City get from the Leyton game, how much will we get from Plymouth? With travelling alll the way down to Plymouth, did they fly? Are they staying there now overnight in a hotel? And it’s not just the players it’s all the staff. Putting up say 50 people? Will Liverpool make any money? Or will it even cost them money to take part in this game?

It’s half the gate receipts and prize money for reaching that round.
08 Feb 2025 21:32:45
The national cup competition don’t really make money I would guess even home games I think 20% of gate receipts goes to fa then 40% goes to travelling team and prize money is next to nothing.

It’s depressing how many people think about money in football these days. The Premier League and Champions League has changed people’s perception of football.

Yeah, big clubs don't play in the domestic cups for the money. It's a relatively trivial amount even if you win them.
I find the "think of how important the draw is for the smaller teams" argument tired and a lazy appeal to emotions as well. How is it fair if one team gets x money for drawing a big team but another small team who reaches the same round does not? It is obvious to most of the world that having two domestic knockout tournaments that serve exactly the same purpose is nonsensical, especially with so much fixture congestion. Maybe if they just had one, it would reclaim a bit of prestige.

I’m not saying it’s rubbish or anything I just wanted to know what the finances are and why clubs still take part when what you could win wouldn’t even cover a week’s wages for the club. Do they legally have to play?

Fidby that looks like a text John Henry would get off his Mrs.

The FA Cup gives non-League teams the chance to win a major domestic cup, Rabbity.
Come on, don't be a killjoy ?.
The FA Cup was massive when I was a lad. It's a shame what has happened to it. The CL has had a big effect on it, imo. Some teams would rather finish fourth in the PL than win a trophy at Wembley.

Rigsby I'm more critical of the League Cup than the FA Cup. The FA Cup is the original cup and, as you say, it's more inclusive. The only reason the League Cup exists is because the League association were jealous of the FA's domestic tournament. It's only about 60 years old. People harp on about "the tradition" but people have been debating its value since I can remember and if they had just scrapped it back then, there wouldn't have been much tradition to scrap in the first place. The League Cup is a completely pointless tournament in the modern day and I don't care how many times we win it; I will die on that hill.

I'm with you Rigsby. We almost saw a huge upset yesterday too in the Leyton Orient. But I get what Babbity is saying as well. Is there really a need to have two domestic cup competitions when most other countries only have one? I think it would work better if they scrap the League Cup and make the winner of the FA Cup qualify for the CL instead. That would increase the prestige of the cups to the level they should be at and make teams more willing to compete for it.

Winning the domestic cups can give huge boost to any club's image - sponsorships, increase fanbase, etc. That alone, in my opinion, is enough to supersedes the income from tix and the prize monies.

I hope the entire first team are having a day off on the sofa today, or in Mo's case doing 6 hours of Ab work in his gym.

The League Cup is great, gives the squad and youth team players minutes, also an opportunity for a day out at Wembley which is a bonus in itself.
As for the FA Cup, well that for me is what English footballs all about, footballer fans around the world love the competition and look forward to watching the Final.
I would rather see the CL get knocked down to a competition for only 'The Champions' of each league (you could throw in 2nd place for the numbers), than lose one of our domestic trophy's!

The domestic cup competitions were massive in the 70's and 80's when I was growing up. Such a shame they are just regarded as "Mickey Mouse" nowadays.
I agree with Rigsby, it gives the smaller clubs and their fans a shot at the bigger clubs and a welcome opportunity to boost their income.

Dracred
No way should winning the FA Cup be a route to the Champions League. There is still the possibility that a lower league side wins it.
But I have a radical idea. Why not create a European competition for all the winners of each countries cup competition. We could call it the European Cup Winners Cup.
09 Feb 2025 09:41:12
Sounds crazy, but I rather Liverpool was in the new World cup than these cups. Close to CL money the new club world cup. Shocking we were not even invited, could have sworn we are a much bigger European club than half the garbage invited!
09 Feb 2025 10:52:11
I like to keep it simple - more cups / games, more I get to watch LFC!
Only caveat I’d say is criteria for qualification or money grabs (club word cup for example) . Only changes I would like to see would be somehow splitting / tiering finances perhaps based on which league teams are in (eg if Premier vs non league, lower get more) and maybe stricter quota introduced for homegrown players helps develop youth (dunno maybe only like 6 non homegrown players in squad? ) .

Fixture congestion is a serious concern in modern football. At the same time, the dynamics of the football world are changing. The football world outside Europe is becoming impossible to ignore with the Saudi league investing a lot, the MLS growing, the South American teams always have developed great talent and now they are receiving more investment and the Japanese have become a dark horse in player development and many of their clubs are owned by the big Japanese conglomerates. it is easily foreseeable that this Club World Cup expands into something more significant and consistent.
You have to move with the times in modern football otherwise you will be left standing still and having two domestic knockout tournaments that serve exactly the same purpose is pointless.

@TB2 - I think it was more a case of Sky and the PL that turned footy into a business in England.

Amorim will end out back at sporting within 12 months, he’s just not a very good manager and believed his own hype too much. Rigid tactics but bailed out by a lad bagging goals left right and centre in a poor league. Without that he seems lost and started early doors with the excuses about United being poor, they are, but fortunes have been spent and he as a manager should be adapting his tactics and trying to improve the players not just relying on amad doing bits from time to time.
