Not really sure we lost much in the midfield battle today.
Virg and Konate looked like they were playing in the pandemic season and were having to maintain social distance from each other.

Huge gaps in between the center backs, it has happened in pre season too, I'm hoping and praying that gets fixed.

Not sure we lost a whole lot in midfield. We died a death with 20 to go. Also missing our starting double pivot.

Some embarrassing comments on here today. Grav would have made a big diff w and wout the ball today. Breaks up play, moves the ball up the pitch. Big miss. Jones passed sideways and backwards as always and even misplaced passes under no pressure. No protection for the CBs.

Jones and Szobo isn't a midfield pair that works, I don't see enough defensively, from them. Needs must though today, and they didn't play terribly. Penalties were a disaster though. VVDs face when Arne high fived Guehi was hilarious!

I do think having a certified DM in there plugs the gap between the cb’s with the fullbacks bombing down the wing and makes a temporary 343 with the ball at least. I’m hoping grav fills that role as we all expect him to, but it’s clear we are playing a slightly different system this season and this might be something we will come to expect.

Redflyer, Jones completed 52 out of 52 passes. Didn’t give the ball away once.
You can criticise the sideways passes if you want but don’t make stuff up about him misplacing passes because he clearly didn’t.

Robboslostlegs, exactly. People just decide to hate on a player or expect every player to be extravagant or with outrageous goals or assists. I love Szobo, one of my favourite players but he lost the ball numerous times that Palace should have punished us from. Jones played quite well, keeps the ball so well and was asked to play that deeper roll today. He didn't really do anything wrong.

Is Nyoni worth gradually bringing on as the true replacement for Grav when he’s unfit or rested? Seems a better fit than Jones.
