Ed001 I don't understand what could possibly be so wrong with what Alonso wants and what we are offering.
Because if he is willing to take over at Chelsea because he is not getting much input there unless they are changing everything for him.

They are a true mess and I think if Alonso has any true interest in being our manager I think he is walking away from it by going to Chelsea.

What is he supposed to do, wait around a year to see if we come calling again?

The Chelsea job is available, the Liverpool job is not. What is so hard for people to understand.

Chelsea are a bizarrely run club with some unconventional decisions being made, but it almost kind of works. With the right manager, they could be a real force, perhaps Alonso could be that manager, good luck to him.

I think that Xabi didn't jump into a role after he left Real Madrid says a lot.

All speculation, but if it is us he wants, he will wait until we've cleared up whatever it is we need to before making a call.

But how long is a piece of string, really.

If he is getting itchy feet and wants to secure his next job then go for it, bro!

But I Rekon just wait. ?

Or, this is all a smokescreen and then he's confirmed Liverpool manager after the season like (some of) the ITKs have been saying. ??

I seriously doubt it with all the noise around the Chelsea job, Faith, though we can only hope. I'm sure that if the decision was made tonight and we came back with our tails between our legs to Xabi, he'd jump at the chance to come to us. Not sure that's happening any time soon though.

No-one would reasonably expect Alonso to wait around a year, but... it's mid-May.

The FA Cup final is on, the CL hasn't been played, the playoff final isn't decided, the league title could go down to the last game.

Maybe wait until late June before getting desperate and taking the Chelsea job.

As I've been saying since January, Alonso's a smart bloke; he's not going to take just any old offer that's thrown at him. He sees what a disaster his season's been with Edwards/Hughes doing the transfers and the coach having to hodgepodge an unbalanced team. If Edwards doesn't relinquish some control over the transfer policy, Alonso's not going to be keen.

We just witnessed how devastating the lack of cohesive vision between coach and execs can be. After the appalling treatment he received in Madrid, Xabi will not be willing to leave so much decisive power on the table going forward as he looks to get his career back on track.
