There was a rumour one time when we played Valencia that Mata would play the first half with them and second half with us. Kind of extravagant reveal of a transfer.

Wowww, Ola Toivonen, that's some real Liverpool-rumours OG stuff right there, a much much deeper cut than Arda Turan, Keisuke Honda, Konoplyanka, Alex Teixeira, Thomas Lemar etc.

Arthur Melo, rumours are that he did sign, I've yet to see any proof. I've seen a still of a match he apparently came on in, but like The Patterson–Gimlin film, I'm dubious.

I do have to say, though, that pretty much all of the players we failed to sign haven't turned out to be that good? Lemar looked a world beater at Monaco and on the same trajectory as Mbappe, but his career at Atleti was generally terrible. Konoplyanka and Teixeira didn't turn out to be anything to write home about either.
I think Fekir could have been incredible for us, though, even if he didn't pull up trees at Betis afterwards, he was a real handful of a player at Lyon.
Anybody remember us signing Loic Remy and then sending him home from our preseason tour because we detected something with his heart?
