Evening Ed’s,

Just a quick question regarding Juan Castillo, is he still with the Ajax 2nd string on loan, and if so, is there an option for them to buy? Is he a player that we have an interest in or simply a viable and sensible suggestion of yours?

Thanks as always.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - No he is back at Chelsea and may well be available. He is not a player Liverpool has shown an interest in but as the fans are keen for another option I suggested him as he is very well respected, under 21 and Home Grown.}

13 Jul 2020 18:00:37
Thanks for the reply Ed, I have literally just read something suggesting interest and remembers you making a mention of him. Appreciate the swift reply. Thank you.

Would you say he was currently a step above larouci and Lewis right now?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - From what I am told he is. He is also capable of making the transition as Lamptey has done.}

14 Jul 2020 07:27:06
Thanks Ed, I’ve always been impressed with the Chelsea youth set up, seems to be ahead of the other in England in having players at the appropriate level to transition into playing at premier league level.

Really rate Lampety already showing his talent at Brighton.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It has taken a long time and a great deal of money but the system is churning out good players. Lamptey left because he was ready to step up but Reece James was ahead of him.}

14 Jul 2020 10:21:28
What do you think is lacking at Liverpool’s academy vs Chelsea’s in order to get up to a similar standard?

I know we have made big strides since the days of pre Benitez, but still a long way to go!

Just hopefully we can start seeing some players make that 100 game mark rather than the odd debut to then have to move on.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It would be the equivalent of at least a couple of years behind right now.}

Money is the answer IMO. Chelsea and City sign young players from all over the world paying them and their clubs much more than LFC can offer. They farm a lot of them out to develop elsewhere. After Brexit it might be a bit more difficult to get them all work permits but I am sure they will be able to place them with " friendly" clubs in Europe until they were ready.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Chelsea and Manchester City do not pay youngsters more than anyone else. Liverpool’s wage bill is more than both Manchester City and Chelsea. Where do you get this stuff?}

Can I ask is Weston mckennie a done deal interesting player could help is in the long run also is there any other interest in a St at all.

I don't think he is a done deal. At least it hasn't been reported yet.

He is a very talented player from what I can tell. We have a few more defensive minded midfielders moving towards the end of their Liverpool careers in the next year or so (Gini and Milner), so it could be a case that he is being brought in as their eventual replacement.

My only concern is our home grown numbers (as Ed002 rightfully keeps reminding us of) . If he comes and Milly goes then I think we are right at the upper limit of non-home grown players in the squad. Somethings has got to give somewhere to keep us in line with the requirements.

It’s not a done deal. Ed002 isn’t aware of any interest so at the moment it seems like the press just putting lfc name in the hat.

He's in talks with Wolves apparently.

Gini at the end of his Liverpool career? Isn't he in talks for an extension?
A bit premature lad.

Not saying he is at the end but he is one of the players moving towards the end. He is 29 and so has a few more years left in him for sure!

I was just trying to work through the logic as to who McKennie may be a replacement for. He plays CM and is non-home grown so the logic would be that he would be a CM replacement for one of our existing non-home grown CM.

Personally i don't think it will happen - and Gini doesn't need replacing so hoping that doesn't happen either!

I would be quite happy to see Gini replaced with Thiago Alcantara but doubt it will happen.

Any truth in lovren contract being extended.
Pretty much ends all this new cb talk.

I read Chelsea are willing to listen to offers for Kante, would he be a player we'd be interested in at all?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Chelsea has not put Kante up for sale - there is interest in him from a couple of clubs - if one were to come up with an acceptable offer and Kante to Chelsea he wanted to move then they would not stand in his way. Liverpool have shown no interest in him and do not have the money to buy him.}

13 Jul 2020 11:27:39
We have fab why would we want kante.

13 Jul 2020 11:54:28
I would take him in a heartbeat. Like ed002 says though we can’t afford him, that’s a silly money transfer and we don’t have silly money.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Jul 2020 12:05:14
Personally, I think Kante’s legs are going and there’s not many miles left on the clock, I’m more than happy with Fabinho personally as his all round game is better.

Ed this interest in Lovren from Zenit, do you no if they're looking to take him this summer?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - There was interest in January and there may well be interest now - but they could look for a loan or perhaps for a loan with an obligation to buy. The other option would be for Zenit to ask Liverpool to release the player from his contract - but Liverpool has already refused such a request in respect of another player.}

13 Jul 2020 10:00:46
That other player being Adrian, Ed?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Yes.}

13 Jul 2020 10:16:35
Thought so, having seen the Real Betis links not that long ago. Thanks for the quick response.

Out of curiosity Ed, which positions do you think we could realistically strengthen this summer, if any?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - If Liverpool cannot improve the first team spending money on padding is not a great idea unless players leave or unless the younger players are not good enough. Klopp wants a first pick CB - but money is an issue. I am sure Klopp wants an attacking player to replace Shaqiri but again money is an issue and youngesters are emerging.}

13 Jul 2020 11:26:12
Padding the squad takes me back to the Houllier and Benitez days. We had game changers like Cheyrou, Biscan, Nunez, Kromkamp etc to bring on off the bench 😂.

Considering there has been very little spent for almost 2 years now, and that we have just won the league and signed the Nike deal, it would seem odd if we had 'no money'.
Whilst i understand that things are quite different in these unprecedented times, is it so bad that we have zero to spend?
Do all incomings depend on outgoings Ed's? Are we expecting Wilson, ShaQ, Origi and Marco to stay now? If any of those sell, are you expecting Carlos to be the main target, and for a deal to go through?
Thank you.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - This has been done to death.}

Ed001 or Edoo2, quick question for you if you've the time. When the club signed VVD the fee was widely reported as £75m. Was that a straight up fee? Or was it £75m with targets? For example x amount of money for CL win, premier league win and him getting footballer of the year? Thanks in advance.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - That was the fee which was an increase of £15M on the fee they wanted. The club paid very significant agent fees as well.}

Spaceman that question has been repeated over and over again and the answer to my basic knowledge is to try understand that our financial running doesn't break down into a simplistic idea of transfer fee net spend recently dictating the funds to splash now. Things such as big transfers in last couple of markets maybe being payed over instalments still due, new contract renewals rising the salary figures, player bonuses, agent fees, lack of star players being sold for big money, lack of gate receipts with empty stadiums, I'm sure a large decrease in merchandise income while the world stopped, stadium upgrades costing large sums since main stand expanded and future works in the pipeline, mega investment put into new training complex to pay for.

So many avenues that the club have spent big on over the years to get us to the top with all that still continuing to draw money while much of our income has halted and we need to plan wisely to manage for the stability in the future without knowing yet what timeframe could impact us in losing out precious income. I recently heard that during lockdown months our salary outgoing was 80mil+ plus paid to staff while no football was played. Without any incoming matchday funds and merchandise there's large losses. Those lost figures could easily equate the big number that many of us expected the club to be capable of spending this summer before the virus. But the people making the decisions have an actual insight into what's best for staying as strong as possible right now while also thinking about keeping strong in times ahead. We simply have to accept they are making the best choices with the factual projections they see and our constant questioning and doubt towards the planning is ignorant and naive with the complete lack of info we have. Constant posts referring to league winners and European winners somehow receiving over the top prize funds are not seeing sense in regards to where the big money comes and goes.
