If Gini were to go, i'd love us to take a look at Eggestein, if Shaq were to leave id like us to look at Trossard and then Patson Daka to replace Origi/ Firmino.

Ed's, what's your thoughts on these players and who has interest in the currently?

Many thanks.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I would doubt Eggestein would get a Work Permit in England unless paying over the odds. Trossard is a decent player but he would not replace Jota well. Patson Daka would not accept a place sat on the bench but there could be interest from Liverpool but there is interest from elsewhere. And Dortmund may be offered him if Haaland leaves.}

Jota had to work to get in the team and done well don't get this sit on the bench talk you get your chances if your good and lucky enough you take them.

I agree Dezzydekidd. There is no such thing as 'sat on the bench' now. Football evolves constantly and over the last few years we've been punching above our weight relying on the same 3 players to score 30 goals a season each, knowing full well nobody else in the squad will get near double figures. I don't think any team can do that season after season. Just shows how far ahead of his time Fergie was. He didn't care if he had Gibson and O'Shea in midfield, as long as he had Ronaldo, Giggs, Berbatov, Nani, Tevez and Rooney to choose from up top.

Go and ask Sterling, Aguero, Silva, Foden, Mahrez, Torres or Jesus how they feel about playing once a week, when they've got 2 or 3 medals in May. I think modern players are now far more aware of preserving their health for after their careers. They're more accepting of being rotated, being subbed, coming on as a sub, being left out of a squad etc. As long as the club is winning trophies or paying you well, who is going to complain?

The only reason Origi, Taki and Shaq sit on the bench is because they're not good enough. And look what it's done to Mane and Bobby having to play 270 minutes every 7 days for 3 years. Bobby is a shadow of the player who scored 27 goals in 18/ 19 and ran Ronaldo close for the Champions League top scorer. He can't even outscore Ramos these days. Salah is the only one who's not dropped off and he is a phenom.

how many teams in the world can say they have 2 top class players in each position? Not many. It is definitely the exception, not the rule. As previously explained, we do not have the money to have 2 top class players in each position either.

Redhead100, that is true but you would not believe it with some of the stuff people post here where they implicitly try to compare us to City in this regard on their bid to bash FSG even tho, they know we cannot afford to have two top players in each position.

Who are the 3 players who we relied on to score 30 goals a season, MK? Also cut Mane some slack he has never been the same since he got C.V.. Mane was our main man last season and I am convinced he will step up again next season.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Our squad is fine and has proved it over a 3 year period and even this season we were top at Christmas.
What we can’t do, nor can any other team in the world including City, is have to play 5 or 6 second, third and in some positions fifth or sixth choice players at the same time week in week out for a long period.
Regardless of squad there will always be a drop off between first choice players and the rest. That’s why they are first choice. Under normal circumstances though you are only forced to play maximum 2 or 3 squad players at any one time and not for a whole season so you can get away with it.
This season we are playing at least 4 squad players every game. Sometimes more and they have even been chopped and changed due to new injuries and C.V. etc.
I don’t care what squad you have that is going to have a huge impact on your results.

Oli i dunno where you got 2 top player in every position. I simply said 5 or 6 top forwards. As in, 5 or 6 players who will score goals. We already have 4 in Mane, Firmino, Salah and Jota. You could have all 4 of them on the pitch in certain systems. If i'd said 8 top forwards then yeah, sure. Shoot me down.

We already have 7 senior forwards on the books when you consider Shaq, Origi and Taki too. The problem is that those 3 aren't good enough. It's nothing to do with FSG or money. It's to do with Edwards and Klopp. They are the only ones responsible for why we have 3 average players as cover instead of 1 good player. I'd even go as far to say that one good player would earn significantly less wages than the other 3 combined. It makes financial sense and competitive sense.

It's a simple fact that we rely on too few individuals for too many goals. We have no goals in midfield because Ox and Keita can't stay fit. Our 5th most reliable source of goals is Van Dijk.

City are not an exception. All i'm asking is that we go for Quality over Quantity. Yes it possibly requires investment up front, but Shaq, Origi and Taki are probably being paid over £150k a week between them. For what? 3 goals a season if we're lucky? Just go get one player on £100k a week who will score 10 a season. You don't need 2 for every position but you do need the numbers to be able to rest and rotate even if somebody is injured. As soon as Jota got injured we lost that luxury and the goals dried up. Without Van Dijk as well, we've literally tried to navigate 3 months with only 3 players in our squad who you'd consider a goal threat.

Nobody is blaming FSG here. They don't pick the transfers. If Klopp has any weaknesses it is loyalty. Edwards biggest weakness is asking ridiculous fees for average players so we get stuck with them. It is okay to criticise constructively.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - how can Klopp be accused of being too loyal when he has never been in a position of being able to keep hold of players he wanted until now? Just because we couldn't offload some of the fringe players doesn't mean we didn't try, but you are making ridiculous accusations of people who deserve far better support. It is to do with money, there simply wasn't the money around being offered to the likes of Shaqiri and Origi, not just in terms of fees but wages, to get them off the books. Though I can't believe you are already writing off Minamino, he showed against us that he has the ability. Oh and he already has 2 goals in 6 matches for Saints, which suggests he would get a lot more than 3 a season if given the chance.}

18 Mar 2021 09:22:02
It's not an accusation or an attack on them. It's just an opinion. Under Klopp and Edwards we've struggled to offload fringe players even long before C.V.. Grujic is still here. Clyne took years to move on. Wilson is still here. Ojo is still here. Awoniyi is still here. Lallana and Sturridge were here 2 years past their sell by date. Karius is still here. Origi and Shaqiri are just the tip of an iceberg! I dread to think how much we pay out in wages to players who don't even kick a ball in anger for us.

The positives of Klopp and Edwards obviously out weigh any negatives by a distance and i hope they're here many more years. But you surely can't deny that our squad is bloated and carrying a lot of players who simply aren't or were never good enough. It's been that way since about 2004! There was still a lot of money thrown about last summer by the way but we know from the past that Edwards tries to get blood from a stone when it comes to selling players. Klopp's obviously authorised the new contracts for a lot of the players we were or still are stuck with, too.

I will admit I have almost completely given up on Minamino though. Mo matter what he's done for Saints in the honeymoon phase, he still only scored 1 league goal in 12 months for us. If he proves me wrong then great but realistically i think he's just not suited to the Premier League.

Anyway, probably will have to agree to disagree on this subject. But i'm still not going to blame FSG for squad management. That falls on Klopp and Edwards. They've been here for so long now that if we are stuck with anyone, they're the sole culprits. Whether that be bad signings, poor contract decisions, or asking for too much. The 25 players at the club are all their responsibility and nobody can convince me a lot of them aren't good enough. I can think that, and still think we'll win the Champions league this year, and reclaim the league title next year.

I do admire you MK. you voice concerns that I sometimes have regarding pricing squad players out of moves that our club and their careers could benefit from. But in the grand scheme of things the hierarchy do a great job. I don’t know how long we can continue to ask big bucks for our outgoing players when recent big money transfers out have been so unsuccessful, (Solanke Brewster) . I agree, it is ok to make constructive observations as long as we recognise how amazing the club as a whole is performing right now.

“Mane was our main man last season. ”

Actually, according to who scored it was Salah (again) who was the “main man”.

Salah 19 goals 10 assists
Mane 18 goals 7 assists

MK does make a good point that our goals have only generally come from our front three and if any of them fail to fire, we struggle to score as we simply don’t have goals in our midfield.

It is evident that our front line and midfield need refreshing as well as another centre back (if Kabak proves his worth then that could be a bargain solution), I think It’s clear that Jota is good enough to step in, so the sensible thing to do is to cash in on the players whose form is dipping alarmingly and whose age is against them, regrettably in that context the sensible option is to sell Mane and Firmino and use that to bring an absolute top drawer forward in (someone who is also not going to be going to AFCON either, so regrettably, not Patson Daka) .

Sell Shaqiri, Origi, Matip, Ox, Wilson, Ojo, Grujic and then use the funds to improve the midfield options and replace Wijnaldum.

I’ll agree with you MK that minamino won’t cut it in the premiership, unfortunately I think he’s too lightweight but it’s hard as everytime I’ve seen him play he tries. I also agree with the fact we have a lot of players we need to move on for their sake aswell as the team. Karius, Williams, matip, Ojo, wilson, shaqiri, kieta, ox, origi are all players that can be improved on. Milner only has a season left in him but will likely stay because of his versatility but don’t see him playing that much. I honestly can’t see us moving all those players but I also can’t see where they fit in the team.

Players like Shaq, Wilson, Grujic and Origi have been priced out of the market. Nobody is playing 20 million pounds apiece for these players. we'd be lucky to get a combined 50 million pounds for that lot. That is where we are struggling to offload them and unable to buy players we actually need.
Hard to pin point why we are so stubborn when it comes to offloading those players and why we insist we receive such high prices for them but just like us, all clubs have serious financial issues and we cannot expect them to stump up big money for injury prone/ inconsistent players mentioned above.
Maybe its just better to take a small hit on the prices of these fringe players just so we have the money to sign one top quality player.
As a whole Edwards and Co have done well but maybe need to realise that the post C.V. market will work a little different and flexibility in terms of the gaps in our squad taking priority over unnecessarily standing firm on the prices of our fringe players.

Agree1 Disagree0

18 Mar 2021 13:35:24
I have to agree with MK and a lot of those who agree with MK's post. We seem to struggle to sell players. Markovic being one of them. And to an extent, Klopp and Edwards have to factor the damage that C.V. has done to the transfer market just by the way they structed the Jota deal. So if its good to apply affects of C.V. logic there, then we should apply it on the ones we seriously want to get rid of.

The same names keep popping up, Origi, Matip, Shaq, Takumi, Wilson, Karius, Ojo NEED to sold this next window. Simple as that. They are not making our bench strong at all.

The reality is that we fans who want these players gone may not know the ins and outs of transfers so we come on this platform to find someone to vent too and to side with us to feel better that others see what we see. Sad thing is, Klopp don't read this and he has his reasons why a tired Milner and unfit Shaq and light-weight Takumi and a goal-shy Origi is good enough for Liverpool.

A bit of devil’s advocate here, but for those saying Edwards and Klopp have failed to trim the squad down because some players are still on the books, what about:

Benteke, Sakho, Ibe, Solanke, Brad Smith, Stewart, Coutinho, Ward, Ings, Mignolet, Lovren, Kent, Brewster

I for one didn’t want Shaq gone until probably this summer, so I don’t think it’s a failing not move him on yet and if you listen to everything Klopp says about Lallana, he certainly doesn’t feel we kept him for 2 seasons too long.

All opinions and that’s what makes football great, but I definitely don’t think it’s a failure on Klopp and Edwards.

18 Mar 2021 17:58:03
I agree with smplfc. And will add that we got fantastic money for all of those players that you listed and not even one of them made us regret selling them, not even Ings, who needed to leave and start afresh to reboot his career. Most of Klopp’s signings have been fantastic - he’s the best Liverpool manager I’ve ever seen at judging a player - and last summer’s plans got derailed a bit because of a C.V. that nobody had seen coming.

I think it's hilarious that posters on here are advising Edwards and Klopp about the transfer market.
It's almost as if the team we currently have was put together by sheer luck then stumbled its way to a few flukey trophies.
Lord knows where our transfers would be without the wisdom of the armchair experts who have achieved the total sum of sod all in football.

Ed002, if you were Klopp who would be your realistic targets for CB, CM and FW this summer?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Assuming sufficient sales to raise the money, of the players Liverpool have shown at least some level of interest in, Konate (CB), Bissouma (CM) and perhaps take a chance on a youngster to replace Origi - Ricky-Jade Jones (S) or Matthew Hoppe (S).}

16 Mar 2021 11:34:55
Agree with Konate and Bissouma but definitely need a new attacker to come in who can make an instance impact.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - The problem would be that he would be replacing Origi and unless one or more of Jota, Mane, Firmino or Salah then he would only get the same number of opportunities as Origi. If Mane or Salah were to go the choice would be different.}

16 Mar 2021 11:57:45
CB - Konate (if Kabak does not convince Klopp until the end of the season
CM - Hard to disagree with Bissouma, being BPL proven and an upgrade on Gini
FW - Patson Daka (if funds permit) and Zambia unlikely to qualify for AFCON.

If Mane were to also go, Ed?

{Ed002's Note - The Patson Daka as a striker would be attractive.}

16 Mar 2021 11:51:56
Ed, what are your thoughts on Darwin Nunez and Amine Ghouiri to replace Origi?

Given that Bissouma plays for a PL team, we may find we are priced out. Are there suitable alternatives?

Also, would Kounde be of interest to us? I feel he would complement Virgil better than Konate.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - These are all players that Liverpool has no interest in. An English club who enquired about Darwin Nunez were told he won't be available before 2022. Amine Ghouiri is not for sale.}

16 Mar 2021 12:30:12
CB B White or Webster.
CM Bissouma or H Barnes
Attack Neto or Raphina
All PL proven.

16 Mar 2021 13:24:15
I think konate, bissouma and a young striker along with minamino coming back along with all injured players would be enough next season.

What will be interesting is who will be leaving to make space for these players. They always struggle to move what some may consider squad players.

Agree1 Disagree0

17 Mar 2021 06:25:27
Ed002, Mane and Bobby in no way should be guaranteed first team players next season. Simply Jota is not enough as competition. Salah looks a little burnt out as well coz our regular front 3 have been run into the ground.
Man City have Mahrez, Aguero, Torres (all good enough to be first team players) on the bench and able to step in when the others need a rest without a drop off in quality. Liverpool need similar blend of quality and depth coz Origi, Shaq and Minamino are just not up to scratch.
A player like Daka or maybe Donyell Make is exactly what we need. Someone who is a genuine threat to Firmino and Mane's places in the first team and who we can build our future forward line around.
I'd say Daka replaces Origi and Minamino. Elliot replaces Shaq.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Players of a higher-profile are not going to move if they are not going to play and Liverpool do not have the money to add such players.}

17 Mar 2021 08:54:05
Just out of curiosity, how much would a player like Daka or Malen cost? I'd assume in 30 million pound region along with agent fees.
Maybe LFC will need to find buyers and good prices for Origi, Minamino and Shaq before we look for that type of forward.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Of that order.}

17 Mar 2021 10:35:24
I'd never heard of Daka before but have been checking him out on youtube (not always a concrete source of credibility) but from what I saw he reminds me a lot of Mane. Very fast, strong and decent with both feet. Also still very young. I'd love to see him in our red shirt!

No offence to anyone on here, but all these talks gives the impression that the Academy is non existent or is useless or clueless in identifying, recruiting and developing emerging talents.
