Wolves boss Mick McCarthy is ready to sign Barnsley's exciting Adam Hammill in a bargain £500,000 deal today, despite late interest from his old club Liverpool.
The 22-year-old Scouse midfielder was tying up a chance to sample Premier League football last night after earning rave reviews with Mark Robins' team in the Championship.
McCarthy hopes to complete the deal quickly after Liverpool counterpart Kenny Dalglish sent spies to watch former Anfield youth prospect Hammill in action last weekend.
Barnsley are being forced to cash in because of a fixed price clause in the player's contract.
gutted thought i was on for a winner there .

Just been reading on ajax life that they never wanted babel it was babel that wanted to go there, hence babel having talks with hoffenheim, it also said that any team wanting to sign suarez would have to pay 25-30m euro and apparently liverpool and spurs were interested, i wish NESV would hurry up and start making some signings, i think we'll see nzogbia 9m, suarez 18m, adam 4.5m and warnock loan with just babel 8-10m to hoffenheim and jova loan leaving.

Agreed Ed, the Suarez circus is just that, no way would NESV allow one of their targets to be shouted arround the media in this way, it just inflates the price and NESV would IMO have backed out of the deal by now if there had been interest.
You've stated in the past that Liverpool have prepared an offer, do you know for what position? or like to hazard a guess?
Also, ESPN Soccernet has a story about Babel to Ajax but it is linked to a story of the accepted bid to Hoffenheim. Think this could be to force Ajax's hand? Perhaps to swap Babel for a player other than Suarez?
I rate ESPN very highly as I use their site for NFL, NBA, and NHL. Thanks again.

Actually mate Suarez didn't say he wanted to come to Liverpool. The media said he would prefer to play with "Spanish speaking players". He said " I am a family man and London would be a good place".
Ajax have never said that Liverpool were interested the newspaper Da Telegraaf said that.
I agree i think that we are interested and Ajax are resigned to losing him. But what worries me is if any other team comes in for him i.e Spurs, then they would look more attractive to him, especially if he wants to live in London.
After all this talk about Suarez we'll probably end up buying no one. Or worse again buying Carlton Cole? ?

A couple of days I would 've agreed, but I do think / believe Liverpool have made an enquiry (to please the masses), but people need to understand there is a big difference between making an enquiry and actually submitting a bid , then a bid being accepted and personal terms agreed etc etc .
I do think Liverpool are the only club with some sort of interest in him and I think he will be willing.
By the way Ed/ anyone , do you know anything about the clubs PR and marketing staff joining as many lfc forums as possible as part of their job? This is what I heard don't know if true or not? If its I think its a very nice touch , keeps them informed of the fans want and act on it like enquiring about players .

Bad News LFC Fans, Suarez will NOT be signing for liverpool, despite interest from the reds. He wants to play champions league football. Also, a fee cannot be agreed. All this suarez talk is just rumours, ED, even believes this information to be untrue. Thanks, The Truth.

No rumors but a reply to people who say they don't want players like Downing, Young, Warnock etc etc. I'm sure i read that one tactic that NESV employ is to look for players who maybe are playing below their potential and therefore are priced a bit cheaper (eEd you might be able to clarify this?). I would put Downing and Young in that category as they are good players but for me they have the potential to be alot better. One problem is the fact that they are British which means that they are priced at amounts which are unrealistic to their ability (happens with any nationality but more so with English players being bought in the Premier League, Bent 18-24mil! I would say he's worth 12mil max).
Rumors (Well my 2 pence worth)
Young & Downing - I wouldn't say no if we got them for a good price but can't see Villa letting them go.
Suarez - Big name don't know much about him but watched quite a few Dutch games last season and the standard was poor.
Honda - Looked good in the World cup just concerned that we would be a flash in the pan but certainly has the potential.
Van Bommel - Hell no, plus he's 33 so would assume that this went against NESV's policy.
Babel - Sad to see his go if he does, i liked him he had the potential but I think that he was caught in a circle of no confidence and playing out of position, seemed to have renewed vigor after RH left.

Hey guys just a few rumours i heard from an ex liverpool youth player who still has contacts at the club.
Elia to sign this week as Babel's replacement. This was suppose to be completed sooner but Liverpool did not receive any bids for Babel until this week!
Big talk that Skrtel is on his way out to Italy and not Agger. Shawcross is favourite to be bought but it all depends if old red face wants him as he has first refusal.
Also there is a striker linked and unfortunately it is not Suarez it is Gervinho!

Long time reader, first time poster.
Infuriating site Ed, but I can't stay off so I think I love it.
I have faith that NESV will do what they believe is right to move the club forward. Now that Babel is all but gone I am convinced that someone must be very close to signing.
I don't understand the Van Bommel rumours as he doesn't fit into what NESV has outlined, also not too partial on Downing, Young, or Warnock as these players all seem to have realised their full potential and are not good enough. I can't see any of them signing.
I do however think that nobody has any idea who will sign other than Kenny, Commoli, Henry, and Werner. This allows me to hope that maybe this is why we haven't heard anything about Turan, Llorente, Shawcross. Players I think could really help. Have you heard anything remotely believable regarding these three players even if its them going to other clubs or staying where they are.
What do you think Ed? Thanks for your time. {ed's note - I have not heard anything about those players, but I think that is a good sign in a lot of respects. I wouldn't expect anything as public as the circus surrounding Suarez for the players we actually are going to sign.}

According to ben smith @ the times were abut 5 mil euros away from agreeing fee for suarez we want pay 20 mil euro ann jax awant 25 milion euro, think reason we publicised agreeing fee to sell babel was to panic ajax!

Despite Ajax insisting no official bid has been made, it doesn't necessarily mean that Suarez will not be leaving Ajax. Liverpool ARE in negotiations with Ajax. Liverpool value Saurez at around £17m with Ajax holding out for £25m. Despite the huge difference in valuation, Liverpool are confident they can strike a deal with Ajax. Only when negotiations have been agreed will an official bid be launched.
As I posted earlier which I am not sure if it was actually posted on here, the reason why Liverpool have accepted a bid for Babel is for the simple fact that Babel wants to go to Ajax and they want him as part of the Suarez deal. But, because Ajax are playing hardball with Suarez, Liverpool are trying to pull down their asking price quickly by 'scaring' Ajax by allowing Babel to talk to other clubs. Liverpool are willing to sell him, hence the accepted offer, but hope Ajax want him enough to come to a compromise with Liverpool for a lower cash plus Babel offer for Suarez.

I played in the same youth team as Chris Kirkland at Coventry. .I spoke to him today asking of any rumours.
Suarez deal is on but a fee can't be agree as yet.
Downing & young won't be signing
He didn't have anymore names but heard Liverpool are trying to make 3signings one being on loan

My friend is studying european art in amsterdam at the moment, and he said the reports in the local papers etc are that Luis Suarez wants to play in champions league, so i am not too confident he will join Liverpool because we won't be back in the champions league for a good few years now.
I can see someone like Van Wolfswinkel, Mario Gomez or Gervinho signing to help torres.
downing is to be babel's replacement and warnock is about to join on loan

What with the rumours about Liverpool interested in Aston Villa wingers Downing and Young. . We may well be interested in both of them, but one of the guys I worked with today, said he was at Ashley Young's house recently installing something - and Ashley wants to move to United and not us.
Not especially gutted as I don't think he is the answer.
Question is whether Villa will sell even one of their wingers, let alone both of them.

Gerard Houllier insists that Darren Bent's supply line will remain intact and Stewart Downing and Ashley Young will not be sold.
The Villa boss was adamant that the highly-rated midfielders are not going anywhere during the January transfer window and will be linking up with new arrival Bent on Saturday against Manchester City.
Houllier was full of praise for his new striker, signalling that the £18million club-record signing is part of the club's long-term plans going forward.
Villa fans will hope that the former Sunderland favourite can quickly find his scoring form as Villa sit one place above the relegation zone on goal difference and will have been heartened by Houllier's stance on two other key men.
"They [Downing and Young] are not for sale - as simple as that. Whether it's Stewart or Ashley, they won't be leaving. They are rumours, " said Houllier.

Ajax are trying to get the best price possible with suarez. . Liverpool are playin hardball. . he is definitely interested and I do expect him to join but not for another couple of days. . price around 18mill plus add ons.
Ashley young is seriously being looked at as a replacement for babbel and downing is just a smoke screen. A similar bid will be lodged (15-18mill) with him allegedly being very interested.
Charlie Adam is being considered aswell, He also wants to sign 5million. (if we can get a suitable offer for poulsen that is)
There are back up options but these are the players that are top of the priority list, if we can abtain their services for a reasonable price, they will be signed.
Regarding the cb and situation i would not be surprised if we were looking at shawcross rather than huth, but his former ties to skankchester could foil any future bids(CB). I have no info on lb :(

Liverpool 'Make Approach For Ashley Young And Stewart Downing'
Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is reported to have identified Aston Villa duo Ashley Young and Stewart Downing as potential transfer targets for this month - with the Reds rumoured to have made a double approach in the wake of Darren Bent's proposed switch from Sunderland.
Bent is said to be in Birmingham to discuss contract terms with Villa after handing in a written transfer request following Sunday's Wear-Tyne derby draw with Newcastle.
Liverpool had an approach for the two highly-rated England internationals turned down last summer, when Roy Hodgson was Reds boss and Martin O'Neill was in charge at Villa Park.
However, both managerial positions have now changed hands, with Dalglish in temporary charge at Anfield and Gerard Houllier looking to make changes after succeeding O'Neill.
The Frenchman still has several connections in the backroom staff on Merseyside following his six-year spell there between 1998 and 2004.
And although Houllier is not keen to sell Young, he believes refreshing the squad could be his only option to turn around the club's ailing form this season - and he believes he can get a good price from the Reds' new board.
Dalglish is desperate to add some spark to his midfield and is keen to deploy Joe Cole in the centre of midfield rather than using him as a left-winger.
And the Scot believes adding the dual attacking threat of the Villa starlets, 25 and 26 respectively, will improve the service from the flanks to striker Fernando Torres

Well since Babel is on his way out we will sertanly get a new striker and a winger. Suarez looks to be the striker accoring to the media (even tho i think this seems alot like the Elia rumours some weeks ago) and for the winger i think it will be either downing or Young, hoping we are atleast considring Honda and we all know that Dalglish likes Turan so i guess we willl atleast talk to galatasaray if its possible to sign him this window (of course if kenny has anything to say about the transfers since hes only here for a half year contract for now). Well it looks 90% certain that babel is going to hoffenhiam , if he has travelled to germany then they must be in advanced stages , hopefully in the region of £6m-7m , now getting suarez should be finacially easier because if we get £7m for him and say suarez cost us £20m then nesv would only have to come up with £13m , if AV can come up with £18m for bent im sure that we can come up with the £13m for suarez , perhaps it wasnt ment to be babel in the swap deal with suarez , perhaps it was ment sell babel and use the babel money to fund a move for luis suarez.

Alright lads as you all know people been saying for a while that babel would go to ajax as part of a deal to bring in suarez ti liverpool (which could still happen) i believe the acceptance of hoffenhiem bid could be to force the hand of de bore at ajax.
i have 2 close friends who work inside melwood but i won't say in which capacity they work there in, i text them this morning to see if babel was in training today as i heard he was in amsterdam finalizing deal to ajax ( since proven wrong ). my friend informed me none of the first team squad were training today given day off. but now i know there is alot of crap that goes around on here and you can choose to believe this information or not but i assure u its from a reliable source inside the club and that's why ive provided my full name and e-mail address to the eds and they may publish it if wrong lol but they informed me that luis suarez arrived at melwood this morning with john henry and damian comoli. john henry left alone 1 hour later and suarez was picked up by a club car along with comoli a little after, but he was told NO medical had taken place and a deal was NOT YET completley on place but he was shown around all club facilites today.
as i say believe it if u will but i assure u it 100% came from a very reliable source.

Profit statement - as far as Mascherano is concerned - depends what website you read - but allegedly we didn't get much more than the £18.6m we paid - nowhere near the £24M some sites quoted.
That's the problem with alleged fees - depending on what site or paper you read, we paid anything from £20m to £26m for Torres.

Why are spurs always trying to nab our targets, can't they just kiss off and make their own transfer list
I might just be talking out my apse but the more I think about it the more it seems to make sense.
1) Liverpool have 30 million to spend in the transfer window.
2) Liverpool take interest in a player of substantial reputation ie) Suarez someone whos price can fluctuate quite a few million.
3) Spurs register their interest in the same player (Having champions league football and hopes for the title have their desired affect)
4)The agent and the club talk to both interested partys ie:player and club
5)Almost overnight you were trying to secure the player for 15 million now you are looking at 20-25 million plus overinflated personal terms to secure the deal.
Spurs are using their stature to inflate everything meaning our budget decreases even though they have no real interest in the player its actually very shrewd bit of business.They can't do it to the likes of man city, United , Arsenal but they can screw us big time.
Ed am I talking sense or twirling deeper and deeper into the depths of paranoid conspiracy theorys.

Apparently, Babel is in advanced negotiations with Hoffenheim. They've said that he's the preferred replacement for Demba Ba (didn't he fail his medical at Stoke?).
They've said that the fee is only 7M Euros, which I'd find disappointing - but, I'm not sure that we'd really get that much of our initial transfer back.
If this is true, can we assume that the talk of him being used in the Suarez deal is false? - is Babel merely trying to reach out to his preferred destination?

Ed, why are you so sure that Suarez won't sign? I must admit i was very sceptical but now that everything is starting to snowball . . . plus nobody has come out and denied interest on either side {ed's note - because there is no evidence and no real concrete talk of it happening. All the rumours are complete pie in the sky, he even said himself that he is staying at Ajax because no one big has come in for him. This is merely his agent trying to get a move for a player that no one is willing to spend the money on because he is a bad risk.}

Disappointing fact is that Suarez is not coming to Anfield this january. just checked it at Espn.com, where Ajax's manager has said it clearly that it would much more to take suarez out and confirmed that there hasn't been a bid in for him yet. . Well his agents have been hawking him around Europe since last spring but the only teams to show much interest in the player have been what you may term the second tier sides (Malaga, Levante and Napoli in the summer) whereas his agent proferred rumours of a move to either Barcelona or Manchester United. Now we are in a situation where a couple of English sides have a passing interest (Liverpool and Tottenham) with Chelsea slightly interested in any offers for the player. And his agent (even this morning) is pushing the Liverpool option as they seem most likely to make a move for the player.

Glen Johnson will not be leaving anytime soon. We are only looking at one winger to cover the left hand side, hence approaches for Young and Young and interest in N'Zogbia. The reasoning behind this is that Dalglish wants to play Martin Kelly as right back to nurture his talent for the future and play Johnson as a right winger. Johnson is brilliant at running with the ball, has pace down the right hand side and has good delivery into the box. Dalglish is hoping to convert him into a winger and have the same success with him as Tottenham have had with Gareth Bale.

Ajax insist they have yet to receive an official bid from Liverpool for Luis Suarez - and have warned Kenny Dalglish they will settle for £25m.
Reports have suggested Liverpool are closing in on the Uruguayan, who scored an astonishing 49 goals in 48 appearances last season.
Suarez has been linked with moves to Manchester United, Barcelona and Tottenham and now Liverpool are also said to be keen.
Director of Football Strategy Damien Comolli has earmarked Suarez as the man to form a lethal partnership with Fernando Torres but Ajax are adamant they have yet to receive a bid.
A source at Ajax said: "He has a contract here until 2013 and he doesn't want to move.
"He wants to be a champion for Ajax which is what we hope to achieve. In the summer? We'll deal with it then.
"Have we had any bids? Not yet. It will have to be an attractive bid too."

Babel hasn't tweeted anything, he is still in twitter jail. However, it does seem that targets were approached before kenny came in. Suarez and van bommel were two of them. Bommel reluctant to sign as the offer is only a short term deal. Suarez will hopefully sign along with downing or young. Time is running out to find a left back. No one will be leaving the squad either. If babel goes it will only be on loan; he loves the club.

Hi ed. in my opinion i believe we will now sign suarez. there atleast seems to be noise coming from both sides. however, i wanted your opinion on how well he would in english football, in particular the premier league? bearing in mind that forlan (uruguyan and suarez international partner) took a long time to adapt, even tho he played for united!?

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we get Suarez from Ajax as he's a a proven striker with plenty of goals & would be the perfect foil for Torres & would take some of the strain off Torres & Gerrard for getting goals. If we don't get Suarez theres a good chance Negrado could sign.
I'm hoping KK will bring on the youth with Suso getting a run out. As for width lets push up Johnson to RM with Kelly (whos been brill) at RB. Its apparent we struggle on the left both LB & LM, Babel should be given a final chance at LM (looks like hes off soon to Holland or Germany) he still may shine with KK's influence. Looks like Joe Cole is on the move again, disappointed as I thought he was going to be a good signing, his fitness is poor. LB big probs as Aerelio is injury prone, in the interim KK could bring in one of the youngsters, a quick fix could be Warnock. At CB (this area has cost us dearly in last 2 games) bring in Ayala, Wilson along with Aggar (if he stays uninjured) we need a ball winner/ sweeper in the Mascherno mould. . Van Bommel! Not sure would only be short fix but then that is what's needed right now.

Suarez, Negrado, Warnock, N'Zogbia, Van Bommel

Joe Cole in very much in Kenny's plans despite reports of interest from other clubs. The reason he hasn't played under Dalglish yet is due to his recent injury and Liverpool are taking precautions to avoid any further injury. He has already aggrevated his injury once. Also, with Steve Clarke now part of the coaching set-up, we have someone who has worked with Cole for years and knows his ability and what it takes to get the best out of him.
Depending on if we sign another striker, David Ngog could go on loan to Sunderland. They have made an enquiry to take him on loan until the end of the season to ease their shortage of strikers based on the imminent departure of Darren Bent. A loan where he is playing each game for lengthy periods of time and playing week in, week out will no doubt help develop him as a player.
Ryan Babel has been talking to a Dutch newspaper where he mentions about Luis Suarez signing for Liverpool and he would go to Ajax on loan for far less pay. Interesting stuff, obviously the Suarez talk is gathering much more pace and seems as if its true. Lets hope it turns reality now!

Width, pace, creativity, goal threat from all of them.

Ed, do you know if there's anything offiically released about this? As long as there's nothing definite about the LFC signings we need or want, it would at least be a relief to kill off rumours about signings that won't be any good. Mark van Bommel - £3m
Charles N'Zogbia - £10m
Stephen Warnock - Loan (end of season, view to a permanent deal)
Kenny did want Stuart Downing but Aston Villa wanted to recoup all of the £12m they paid for him with Liverpool reluctant to go about £10m, hence the decision to turn to N'Zogbia.
The hold-up now in the Darren Bent to Villa transfer is due to the fact Villa are awaiting Liverpool to turn their initial enquiry for Ashley Young into an official offer where they will then use the cash to sign Bent.
These would all be really good additions in my eyes, although the attitudes of Suarez and N'Zogbia is a concern.

Suarez is the back up option that's why the deal hasn't been sealed.

No-one would love to see Suarez at Anfield more than me (despite his cheating past lol) as we are desperate for a top goalscorer, but please stop with the lies that he was seen here, there and everywhere in Liverpool unless you back it up with a photo & signed autograph.
What is important is that we don't look towards one big buy i.e Suarez, Young, Kaka, Benzema, SWP or whoever as the clubs saviour, we need a combination of 3 or 4 players that can compliment each other and the team/ squad.I just hope that the Rip Van Wolfswinkel rumours were just that and no more, he just isn't good enough.

nothing has been sealed he is not in liverpool. Not at the marriott as they don't put there potential signings in the Marriott. They do have private penthouses which they put the players in when they are awaiting medicals or player contract talks.

KK and Comolli have a short list of the following players: -
LB - Warnock, Coentrao

ST - Llorente, Suarez, Lukaku
My opinion is KK will go for Warnock as a short term soluation to our left back problem. Then in the summer will bid good money for Coentrao.
I don't see us getting a new CB in January, however am sure we will sign one in the summer.
LM will see the arrival of Downing. RM will be SWP. I would prefer Young but Villa won't let him leave.
Are new striker will be Suarez, however i would prefer Lukaku and he is set to be a world beater.
I don't believe we will sell maybe players in Jan. But by the end of the summer transfer window i believe the following will have left: -

We will sign the following:
Van Bommell - to replace the grit in midfield since selling Mascherno.
Stephen Warnack - need a left back nad we should never of sold him in the first place.
Stewart Downing - Left footed wide man, which we are missing.
Suarez - a partner for Torres.
This is a good start and enough to get us through the season and push for Europe and not battle relegation.

Well lads, theres 2 weeks left in the transfer window so the transfer cogs must be turning now. Lets hope we get rid of the deadwood and find some decent players. Suarez is not coming to anfield. By the looks of it - the media are just bouncing rumours off each other. And lets be honest - most rumours are just made up to sell papers and betting slips. The only confirmed target i can think of is Marveaux. Also, i would be very surprised if we didint buy a striker.

Well as i said earlier on tonight, Luis Suarez is now 90% a Liverpool player. I know a decent lad who works at a certain area in Liverpool and usually he's right about these things (he's not Kenny's uncle's sisters house cleaner), he is a lad who works in a certain position which is in close relations to the club. Now before people start trying to slate me for this, i gave the info that Suarez deal in principal has been done but the obvious latter stages of the deal must be completed ie. personal terms, medical etc so remember you heard it off me first. I was told earlier if all things go well that the deal will be completed by Wednesday, now ive been informed that if the deal is not completed on Wednesday it will be 100% complete by Thursday evening. The man in the know.
