Ed002 I wanted to ask your opinion if I may. How you would try to solve the clubs goalkeeping concerns?
The options seem to be
1. Keep mignolet as starting keeper until the summer and look for a long term replacement in the meantime, accepting that a top four finish is even less likely given he will probably cost us a few more games after xmas
2. Promote bogdan to starting keeper until the summer. Again it does look as if he will cost us a few games too
3. Try to sign a new keeper in january- although it seems our likely targets won't be available anyway

I hate the casual slagging off of players that is so common these days with lfc fans, but I do think that the club cannot afford to continue with mignolet as starting keeper in the long term, he is simply not good enough for enough of the time.

{Ed002's Note - This is secret advice that should not be shared, but, personally I would look to a very smart move in the summer for a well-respected excellent goalkeeper with extensive Premier League experience - and at 28 he is currently only a second pick.

I would take the position of enquiring with the agent of Asmir Begovic to see if his client would look favorably on Liverpool approaching Chelsea to see if he could be made available. This would be a smart move in that Begovic is a very good goalkeeper, as he has shown when he has had the opportunity at Chelsea and previously at Stoke, he has a mass of good experience, but he knows he will continue to be only the second pick at Chelsea. Also, it would be a good move knowing that Chelsea as a club do not, as a rule, stand in the way of players looking to leave if they have a replacement. And Chelsea do have a replacement in mind who would certainly be open to the more limited chances a number two goalkeeper gets compared to the very rare chances a number three pick would get. So it might help ease that transfer through. Begovic wouldn't be cheap but he would be a low risk option that could be available in the summer - and "low risk" is a key point with goalkeepers.

I don't see any knee-jerk reaction in January - for no other reason than clubs will not be looking to sell players in key positions (particularly goalkeepers) in January.}

Surely Begovic knew he would be No2 when he signed so why would now be any different? also didn't he knock us back before he signed for Chelsea?

Would that player in mind as the replacement be mignolet by any chance ;)

{Ed002's Note - No Fencey.}

Cheers Ed, begovich would be a real boost if it could be done.
Fingers crossed that Klopp and t'committee see sense.

What about Diego Lopez when fit? Now they have that 16 year old kid, will Milan be worried about selling? Swap for balotelli haha!

Do u think we should hire another gk coach, eds?

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - No. #WonderDogSparky runs a fetch and catch training class on a regular basis. It will be an improvement on what Liverpool already has.}

Begovic would be an excellent choice, if CFC really are interested in Benteke, maybe a cash plus AB deal could be brokered . With young Ward up at Aberdeen doing really well, would it also be possible to recall him as our no2 keeper, maybe offering Aberdeen Bogdan in exchange? Begovic and Ward would make us a lot steadier between the sticks, and maybe we could find some poor team that will give us a few quid for SM .

Bruce Grobbelaar said that the other day, he said the goalkeeper coach has had two years with Mignolet and if he still can't coach him they need to get a new coach.

We missed the chance to sign him up in the summer. He was available. the Money was less and we did not. Chelsea wouldn't sell anyone till summer unless they bring a new manager.

Begovic is not the required level for LFC to push on. He hasn't played well for 3 years now. Yes an improvement on Migs, but no where near a level we need to be competing.

Hi eds, is there any truth with us being linked to Basel striker Breel Embolo? Thanks.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - Basel's Breel Embolo remains a target of Borussia Moenchengladbach, Spurs, Inter, Juventus, Red Bull Leipzig and West Ham with Basel aware of interest from all of these clubs in addition to Wolfsburg who have discussed a transfer with the club. Barcelona, Everton, Southampton, Liverpool, Arsenal and Leicester have also had the player watched.}

Ed2, do you get this from your own notes or another resource? I'm constantly impressed by your ability to come up with relevant detail about obscure players from around the world.

Ed002, have Liverpool ever looked at Kamil Glik of Torino?

Or are Matip and Subotic the only realistic options for a January transfer?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Torino's centre back Kamil Glik has been watched by a number of clubs including Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund , Roma, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Benfica and West Ham United. The interest of Roma, Arsenal and Dortmund is serious but the player is keen to stay in Turin for the time being and will sign an extension.

Schalke's Joel Matip has been watched by Sunderland, Newcastle and Liverpool but will not be available in January with the club rather letting his contract run down as opposed to having their season disrupted. He would soon be cannon fodder for the Liverpool fans.

Dortmund will be willing to let Neven Subotic, who has been of interest to Spartak Moscow and Arsenal, leave in January. I suspect the interest of Arsenal has moved on but I would not rule out an offer being made by either Hannover or Liverpool.}

Cheers Ed. I assume the talk of Murillo this morning is BS? I can't see why Inter Milan would sell myself.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed002's Note - I am not sure what talk there has been of Liverpool interest in Jeison Murillo but I know nothing of it. However, when Benitez was asked recently about Inter Milan's supposed "valuation" of Jeison Murillo and their rejection of an offer of €35M from Real Madrid he was rather bemused. Whilst Inter are keen to raise cash to buy with, I would expect that they would bite the arm off any club offering what is five times what they paid this past summer.}

Liverpool Echo reporting Marko Grujic has agreed a contract and will have a medical later this week. GBP 5 deal plus 10% sell on clause. In addition he will be loaned back to Red Star for the rest of the season.

What does this deal mean for Rossiter, will he see this as another obstruction on his path to be a 1st team player? Not sure if the Serbian lad plays in the same position, so like the man in the orthopaedic shoes, I stand to be corrected.

Agree2 Disagree2

22 Dec 2015 08:53:21
Why is everyone so bothered about new players being brought in and "obstructing" paths for players in the LFC pipeline? Yes, it's a definite plus that Rossiter is a Liverpudlian, but then so what? You build a champion team by having at least 2-3 or more players fighting for each place. And we all know it. Did Shankly, Paisley and Dalglish do it another way? Did they give preference to the local players or go for the younger inexperienced players? Or did they assemble the best squad they could and let players fight it out for their places on the field? Yes, nurturing local youngsters is a priority, but not at the expense of the best possible performance on the field. And besides, times have changed in a big way. If clubs are going to be loyal to the local players, then that loyalty has to be reciprocated by the players. And there is no such thing anymore. The Callaghans, Carraghers, Gerrards, Terrys and others are all a dying breed, replaced by mercenaries.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - Shankly and Paisley used to bring in younger players to develop them in the reserves before integrating them into the side. Impossible to compare though, as their method was possible due to the much higher level of reserve football in those days. It was properly competitive football back then, something young players lack now. That is why they need to either get first team football early, or go out on loan, or be sold to somewhere they can get first team football and develop.}

22 Dec 2015 09:14:01
It's not only because he is a local lad that I'm mentioning the possible obstruction, it's a similar situation we had with BR that young players see similar players, of the same age arriving to the club.

Wisdom-Manquillo
Ibe - Marcovic
Ilori - Gomez

Are just a couple of examples I can think of.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Putting aside Ilori already having been discarded prior to Gomez arriving, I don't see that bring in Gujic as being any sort of change of policy away from hoping something decent comes from the academy. You are right that players such as Rossister will look at this and know it makes life harder for him - and as such he needs to think about his future.}
