Graeme Kelly saying Butland will 'more than likely sign for liverpool' this summer. He's proved to be a more believable source over the past couple of years but I leave it up to everyone else to decide whether he's accurate or not.

Yeah he is pretty spot on alright. Called Robertson months before anyone even mentioned him and ox months before also. I was critical of karius and have to say he is proving me wrong since he came back in. This deal makes no sense to me. If we want to replace karius it needs to be oblak Allison or someone of that ilk. Butland will cost 30+ million because he is British regardless what division he is in. Klopp has done a fantastic job so if that's who he wants that's who he gets what do I know.

Well if Stoke get relegated maybe he won't be that expensive if he has a release clause in his contract (just assuming) . Stoke has racked up a huge wage bill over the last couple do years with signing big players. I am sure if they go under they will have a hard time paying those wages.

Mignolet will want to leave and compete else where for a starter spot and I am sure Danny Ward does not want to be second fiddle. Going from Stoke to Liverpool will be a huge jump for Butland if he wants to be on a Champions League team. The guy has not set the PL or England National Side a blaze with his goalkeeping heroics. I can see how this deal can go through, as did Begovic when he moved to Chelsea.

I would be truly disappointed with the mediocrity of Butland unless he was intended to fit in as a second keeper with Karius resuming first choice and Migs to depart. If we are looking for a first choice keeper than mediocrity isn’t good enough for the way LFC are progressing in Europe. Although I would add that Robertson is mediocre but his work rate and ethic are fantastic.

{Ed025's Note - i think robbo is better than mediocre myself ben..

23 Apr 2018 19:37:41
I’m not sure this would be a good move. I will always support a player wearing LFC red but I don’t see him as any better than Karius, who has come on leaps and bounds. Yes he still has some issues, but Butland is no better IMO. Even if he just comes in as competition that hardly sends a good message to Karius does it and Butland would want to be No. 1.No I think get some older experienced hands happy to be a number 2 but still ensure Karius is on his toes. Be interested to hear the eds thoughts on Butland v Karius.

Robertson mediocre?! Even the most bitter utd fans i know have admitted they'd live Robertson and he's been an absolute bargain. Fans need to trust klopp and the lads making the transfers. I have been on here and defended Robertson, ox, salah and van dijk when we were buying them. And they all worked out brilliantly. If we sign Butland we need to get behind him. He's a young gk who had massive potential and has struggled at times in a terrible team. sound familiar?

UncleBens you lost me at 'Robertson is mediocre'. I suspect you wouldn't be saying that if he was French or Italian with tattoos and a flashy haircut.

Robertson being mediocre is obviously a harsh statement. However, let's not get all caught up in the better keepers out there. When Karius first came everyone was excited because of the reputation he came with as the second best keeper in the Bundesliga. He struggled, but he is getting better why not let him build on it instead of giving him insecurities. In all honesty I never heard much about Allisson until this year, I am sure this is not his first year at Roma either.

We always try to sell talent coming to be apart of something being built, we as supporters should show the same loyalty to players who have gotten us to where we are now. Karius is definitely a big part of that now, no need to abandon him.

I’m glad my comments have sparked a fair debate over Robertson. It’s really good to hear a list of varied opinions, including the Ed’s too. That’s what makes this sight so great to read everyday.
I do stand by my opinion of Robertson and it certainly has nothing to do with him being an underdog nor where he is from. We purchased him knowing he would fight to prove himself and that is his work ethic. That’s what I find so brilliant about him and I do genuinely believe he is mediocre.

Not an improvement on Karius so unlikely.

Butland is no improvement in what we have. The next step from karius would be a world class keeper an oblak type, right now I’d keep karius and save the money unless we are going for a top class keeper. Butland is overrated.

Harry - Alisson joined Roma in July as understudy to Szczesny. Became first choice last year and has come on leaps and bounds. Everything i've hear is that he is extremely good.
However I agree with you that Karius is doing a great job. he's still prone to making the odd mistake but hopefully he will continue to work hard on improving his game and make the position his own for years to come.
Regarding Robbo - I like him. he's not flashy but he works hard and seems willing to learn. What more can you ask for?

Agree3 Disagree0

24 Apr 2018 14:27:21
I would keep Karius, he is still learning, and will become a great goalkeeper, he needs to learn when to come out of his goal tho, the 2nd V west brom, he should only have come off his line by a yard or so to narrow the angle, then its an easy save,
like I said, keep Karius, but bring in a left back, moreno has to go, also another centre back and let Matip go,
a deep midfielder to replace Can,
I would use what players we have and who are coming back from loan to cover the front three .

😂LMAO. Lost me a mediocre uncle ben.

I would love to hear what part of Robertson game you think is mediocre? His tackling? Crosses? Attitude? Reading of the game? Speed?

Of just because our club spotted somthing in player playing for a mediocre team (Hull) he is now desitened to be classed as mediocre for the rest of his career?

In my opinion you should base your judgement on performance and there is no way, in my opinion, that anyone can say he has had anything near a mediocre performance this year and even beyond.

Anybody want to put their money on Allisson Becker? Could have just been a bad day at the office for the lad.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Apr 2018 03:23:19
Not much he could do about those goals and he saved a fair few that could have made it worse. Roma management want to lock him down to a big contract so I sincerely doubt he moves to England. Of course Roma do love a dollar and he'd be a good candidate for a massive fee but they've got a damn good team there and would had to let an amazing keeper go.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed0333's Note - I didn’t think he made any world class or eyebrow raising saves last night. I’m not being disparaging because I’m sure he’s an excellent keeper I just haven’t seen enough of him to make a judgement. I can only comment on what’s put in front of me.

Liverpool seem to want butland, expect a macca post to say similar eds.

Question for everyone. Is Butland that much better than Ward? It's clear Butland is the more experienced GK (even more than Karius), but is there so much of a difference in skill to warrant letting Ward go and bringing Butland in?

Agree14 Disagree1

23 Apr 2018 11:03:59
If he signs I will back him to the hilt, but my god am I hoping he doesn't sign. One of the few keepers in the league who is nearly as bad as Mignolet. Fraser Forster as back up Ed001? 😉.

{Ed001's Note - why not go the whole hog hey MKS?}

23 Apr 2018 12:37:03
With Stoke almost certainly going down Butland will want to move but, right now, he'd be coming here as no 2.

If he has the guts to come here and fight with Karius for the shirt then respect to him and I'd be ok with that. I think it would mean that all talk of a superstar goalie would be over though.

I would rather cheer up Ed025 to pick up the gloves and do a job for us! He wouldn’t let us down my adorable ☺️☺️☺️. Butland is an upgrade or Hart which is what he is at his best!

Klopp will have to sacrifice the defense in order to prioritize the attack. Navas to butland is a not a huge upgrade. We are saving every penny to splash it on other areas. Good!

Forster is a rotten keeper MK, every bit as bad as Butland if not worse. I guess it could be worse, it could be Navas who is truly a shocking keeper.

When he got the Stoke keeper role in 2015 he looked great and was arguably the best keeper in the league until his injury. Since then he hasn’t looked as good and has made a fair few mistakes this season which we have panned Mignolet and Karius for in the past, add to that his injury record and I can’t say his signing would excite me. I see him going to someone like West Ham.

Butland has been out of form since the injury.

He was looking like a potential great before the injury. No reason why he can’t rediscover his form.

Goalies do get injured. Aren’t top clubs ideally supposed to have two decent keepers?

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Apr 2018 13:05:48
For 20m, Butland makes sense to me. He will have the chance to be Liverpool's goalkeeper; that should motivate him to reach his full potential.

If it doesn't work out, we should be able to sell without a loss - or even a profit. And Karius is proving more than able, at the moment.

Basically it' a freebie from our perspective.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - how on earth do you figure that out? A player who can't stay fit does not keep their value. Before his injuries he was rated at around 20m. Now, despite the obscene leap in transfer values, Butland is now valued at under 20m by anyone sane. Does that not tell you something?}

24 Apr 2018 17:59:40
Well if what karius has done hasn't improved his standing in the first team then I'm unsure what type of form a keeper needs to show in 6 months. He's been magnificent for a young lad coming in with all the pressures of the crowd to goalkeepers thanks to migs and after his "dodgy" great run of 10 games with 6 clean sheets in his first season, thanks to being slaughtered by Jimmy Carra and everyone involved in punditry. Who clmaoured for freaking calamity back haha.
