Hi Eds, wondering if you know of any interest in Alexandro Bernabei?
Seen some tenuous links to him as he's a young attack minded full-back who could provide cover for Robertson. Although I would think a work permit could be an issue.
Also do you know if Thiago Alcantara has handed in a transfer request and are Liverpool definitely in for him?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - (1) Alexandro Bernabei would not be eligible for a Work Permit unless the club played well over the odds. (2) I am not aware of any approach from Liverpool to Bayern Munich at this time so handing in a transfer request to lose €2M would be a dumb thing to do as far as I can tell. If Liverpool are interested, they need to approach Bayern Munich which to date they haven't.}

Hi Ed's, long time follower first time poster. Daily Mail are reporting our interest in Betis' Aissa Mandi; he's a comfortable ball playing defender from what I've seen and reports suggest Betis need funds so it could be a clever move given our limited budget and Lovren moving for what would be a similar fee.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Aissa Mandi (CB) Real Betis CB who Newcastle have an interest in. West Ham were interested last summer but not convinced, and instead opted for young prospect Goncalo Cardoso. Real Betis would sell at the right price. For Liverpool he would be a Lovren replacement and financially perhaps using Nathanial Phillips makes more sense. Another who would be off the AFCON.}

If Nat Phillips is willing to be part of the squad as a support role I would seriously hope we consider it.

I guess it’s just a question of whether he would be willing to not play regular football. He is also helpful for our HG quota and no expense required.

Agree with Ed002. Nathanial Philips can be a good backup instead of spending 90m on one.

Nat Phillips please!

Phillips did well against Everton when he was needed in the cup, I see no reason why he shouldn’t be a decent fourth choice.

Am I the only one who would like a top class CB to be signed for the next season? Gomes has been passive off late and Klopp clearly want to shore up his defense. Without VVD we are literally pants and Diego Carlos is a beast. Highly experienced and a senior center back.

I think indeed, it is a great opportunity if fund permit to get a first choice CB, not the 4th.
Remember, Matip can’t be relied upon to stay fit.
I would demote him to the 4th, and even 5th if any of the youngster will step up.
Between JG, VD and this new signing, they would take 2 slots.
And god forbid, what if JG or VD get injured? Rely on Matip?
Whatever has been said about Louvren, he is an extremely capable 4th choice, and together with Matip, they provide very good cover most of the time.
To get a 4th choice of his calibre, I am not particularly positive.

Can anyone name me a 4th choice CB in any club which you would take in place of Louvren?

Both Matip and Gomez had spells last season when they made Virgil look inferior. Matip, in particular, was in sensational form before his injury. Phillips and Fab are more than adequate if needed.

We tend to only use recent few games or weeks now to make judgements on our players and other teams players too. Players will have dips in what is so often top drawer level performances. Gomez had been immense since reagaining his place and up until we got the job done but now he's suddenly not good enough based on last few games where we were always going to lose a level of intensity.
Another post asks rhetorically what will we do if matip needs to replace one them due to injury. Seriously how could that person ask that after matip only last season played so regularly as a starting CB in a year we finished on 97 points and conquered Europe. Every one overreacting to any sign of frailty shown in just a small number of games that will be the least important fixtures Liverpool have had for ages and likely be a long time before we face into 6 or 7 games with no where near the importance and pressure these players faced with each of the last 100 or 150 games where we were never playing without a possible title up for grabs. Please appreciate that our players performed when we truly needed them to and it's only fair we accept they picked the perfect time to drop a few points.

To say nat Phillips played well against Everton means he's the answer is just silly. How about the level he sustains in the other 98% of the season. Can you say that he's proved enough other than using 90mins against a dreadful Everton attack to base your faith on?

Brilliant post again, Har_red92. Gomez looks passive so a new CB needs to be signed. VVD has looked passive as well and Matip and Gomez esp., have outplayed him several times so by that pathetic logic by the OP, VVD should be replaced by a top CB yet he does not say who that would be. And by the way Harry, Louvren does not play for LFC. Dejan Lovren does.

Bild linked us with highly rated Leverkusen youngster Edmond Tapsoba yesterday. He’s only recently joined them so maybe unlikely.

Eds, any shred of truth in this link? Is he a good player?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Edmond Tapsoba (CB) Moved to Germany in January 2020 and much is expected of him. They have no have no intention to sell and it would likely take an offer of perhaps €40M to tempt them. No known approach by Liverpool and if there were to be they should perhaps think seriously about him having to play in AFCON.}

Thanks Ed as always.

{Ed002's Note - You are welcome.}

Ed002, is AFCON 2021 back on? I thought I read on here that it had been cancelled for 2021? Must have misread or something.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - No, I don't recall suggesting that it is. If you are suggesting taht the club is now just buying players for the season and then selling them, you are right, it doesn't matter. But they will again look like complete flakes.}

26 Jul 2020 10:07:23
The day we take serious news from Bild will be a sad one. May as well listen to that prat from Bolton.

Thanks for the reply Ed002. And no. There was no ulterior suggestion and implication other than the question. I didn't imply you had said there had been a cancellation either. 👍.

Hi Eds. Does Klopp think that Joe Gomes is not going to make it into a top class talent by looking at other centre backs for a first team slot or is it more that he just needs to always have 3 first team standard CBs available?

Thanks for all your work over this brilliant fever dream of a season.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Before the pandemic there was no doubt that the club were looking to a high-end player to partner van Dijk as a starter. The whole financial scenario has changed and right now Liverpool don't have the funds to do that.they have youngers who can step up to fill some of the holes in the squad but will still likely add one or two players.}

25 Jul 2020 11:50:16
Just listened to some interviews with a few Anfield legends. Talking about adding to the squad and Xavi Alonso believes Klopp May look to play 3 centre backs in certain games which could explain the desire for a quality addition. Three at the back might be a way of unlocking some defences?

Agree1 Disagree0

25 Jul 2020 12:30:31
I'm not sure 3 at the back would be any more attacking than our normal formation, with how attacking our full backs are and how fabinho drops back at times. Think its more likely that Gomez has maybe played half the games that van dijk has played over the last few seasons for one reason or another, and that gomez can cover all defensive positions so is likely to pick up plenty of game time anyway. Not saying I think it's a good idea, as I like gomez beside virg, but that's a more rational reasoning I reckon.

Morning eds n reds

ed2, i was wondering if we lose several players with no fee coming in ie lallana would that make enough of a difference to be able to spend in the close season.

Lallana is on £80k a week ( a guess ) . Then perhaps 3 or 4 released players from u 23's. I know they are small change compred to first teamers.

Or do we have to sell players for consideranle fees.

Cheers matey.

{Ed002's Note - The savings on wages free up wages rather than give spending money. The wage bill at Liverpool is very high (more than Manchester City and Chelsea) so any savings will be welcome. Players will be sold that likely free up funds to add a couple of players - Grujic, Karius, Shaqiri, Wilson, Miller, Lovren, Larouci etc. leaving will likely fund a player or two arriving as has been explained. But some of those funds would be lost in fees and some might be required elsewhere.}

Cheers ed. You always reply and its much appreciated.

{Ed002's Note - You are welcome.}

25 Jul 2020 10:58:09
Good morning ed. Hope Milner doesn't leave as an intense season approaches. Clyne, Lallana and Lovren leaving should free up a decent amount in wages as they were all on big money.

Hope we can at least bring in one first team starter, and lb cover. We though have room for internal growth, I am expecting Keita, Fabs, Firmino, Ox, all to have better seasons. Also Williams and Jones should have an increased role to play. Appreciate you work.

25 Jul 2020 12:43:58
Wow wage bill higher than City. Is that as a higher percentage of income on wages or just a higher figure being spent in general? Chelsea I could see as they’re not the star studded team they once were and have a few young academy players.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It is the wages paid.}

25 Jul 2020 13:03:55
Agreed that is a surprise but its only £3m or so difference. Next year expect City to pay more than us.

Agree2 Disagree0

25 Jul 2020 13:22:00
Even still, yeah only £3m but never in a million years I would have thought Liverpool would have a higher wage bill than City.

Agree2 Disagree0

25 Jul 2020 14:58:31
I don’t think people realise how much wages we will save from Selling/ releasing certain players.

Lallana, Clyne, Lovren would be just under £15m a year savings, add to that Shaqiri and a few others might help offset the new contracts for our key players.

Good lord - some on here are so disrespectful to our players treating them like meat at a meat market, all the best to Lallana and Clyne and thanks for the memories.
