Rumours about today that we've spoken to Nicolas Pepe's agent. Just passing on a rumour though! Work colleague mentioned he'd read it online somewhere. Seen his name on here so thought I'd share 🤷‍♂️ Ed002, is he the one you said would likely be a Salah replacement?

While I'd love us to have a 4th option of equal quality to play in attack, I doubt we'll sign anyone ready made. I think the way we;ll end up with a 4th attacking player of the right quality is if we sign someone young and develop them, or someone from the academy.

Fingers crossed that Rhian Brewster can realise and fulfil his potential.

I read it also, Duncan castles the united fan journalists tweeted it.
Pepe is a top young player, I think a Pepe type signing might see the likes of Salah or Mane leave.

No way were after Pèpè. Ed002 mentioned only way we go after ashore signing is if Mane or Salah leaves! Not happening.

I don’t think pepes ready made, its really been his breakthrough season this year. If we want to complete on 4 fronts, like city do, like all top teams do, we need strength in depth. 4 players for 3 positions, 50 plus games a season, so that’s 150 starts a year. Say origi and shaqiri play half the amount each, that’s 30 starts a season for the four and 15 for origi and shaq, plus sub appearances. is that bad?

Doesn't work like that Firmane, injuries are not something anyone can predict with any degree of accuracy. Whilst Origi and Shaqiri can no doubt deputise for a period of time imagine if, say, Salah or Mane were crocked for an extended period? I have faith that Origi and Shaqiri can perform in spells - but to be consistently as good as those? Probably not. The idea of signing someone to both push them, and give us another option, makes a lot of sense to me, though who that player would be I have no clue as a rarely watch any other football besides ourselves.

Seano, my point was we do need another player of a certain quality, and even if we do not have any long term injuries, they can all play plenty.

i cannot understand why we can't have Pepe in our side! if Klopp trusted Origi and Shaq to rotate with the front 3 he would have done more often last season.
clearly we need that type of talen to come in compete.
why do you think City won the domestic treble? their bench was thick with high quality talent.

{Ed002's Note - Why do you think Jesus, Sane and others want out of Manchester City? Why would Pepe move to sit on the bench at Liverpool with Werner, Depay and Dybala? Why are Liverpool interested in someone else?}

30 May 2019 11:47:38
we are interested in someone else because front 3 can get injured at any time.
we were lucky last season.
most LFC fans prefer Firmino over Origi. Yeah, Orig got us to the final but over 60 games, Origi won't score 15 + goals in the league.
thats why were are looking for someone else.

Yeah but ed, Jesus sane and mahrez are three players who are higher quality than shaq and origi. All can score goals and would be fine slotting into citys front three.

Whilst I’m not saying it has to be Pepe, we can’t compete on all fronts with shaq and origi as our only options for the bench or as competition.

I completely respect your opinion and knowledge, but to me that view is very black and white, that they will either replace salah or mane or be reserve. Competition is good, and yes, whilst I’m sure they will still be in our best 11, it doesn’t mean that salah mane and Firmino have to start every game.

{Ed002's Note - Right, and I have explained where Liverpool have an interest in others.}

Not that agree of disagree with the idea of having back up players of high calibre but people who say "player X would not want to sit on the bench" well that's exactly what most players (especially attackers) do at Madrid and Barcelona nearly every season. Hell we lost one of our star players because he would rather sit on the bench at Barcelona than be a first teamer at liverpool. Same thing happened with Owen at madrid. There are plenty of other examples at other clubs too. There are even examples at our club both past and present.

Throughout the 90s Milan had world class players sitting on the bench because their first team was packed with world class players.

Players are ok with being a bench warmer sometimes if they are confident of their ability they assume they will work their way into the team, and if you're really good that's exactly what happens. When you're not good enough or have the wrong mentality you remain back up or you leave.

Football has no guarantees and most professional players accept that, even truly great ones.

Agreed, Man City have Sane and Jesus looking at their options because they'd like more play time. Whatever happens in that regard, they'll sell them for a lot more than they paid for them, so as far as City are concerned, they can just sell them and replace them.

If any of our front three wanted to leave, we'd sell them for a hell of a lot more than we paid for them. I obviously cannot predict the crazy inflation of football players' transfer fees, but if Pepe came in for £70m, it's very hard to see that figure really increasing if it didn't work out. Of course it could, but very hard to predict future transfer fees in one or two season's time.

{Ed002's Note - There are others in the same boat - Sane and Jesus were just examples.}

Thanks for the reply Ed002. What I was mainly getting at, is that unless you sign a player towards the end of their career, you won't normally lose too much on them if they're not happy with they're play time, unless of course they do something stupid, like bite someone.
