It is quite clear that only an obscene amount will bring Keita to Liverpool.

Unless Keita decides to 'piss' on his current club then nothing is going to happen.

Or He could just put in for a transfer and say he'd be unhappy to stay.

Ralf Ragnick (RBL's Sporting Direct) has said that not even a 100m bid will make them sell Keita. I don't know what other hint that LFC and some on here need. Move on, pls.

Yes but the CEO has said that he would not stand in Keitas way if he wanted to leave. This happens every transfer window, it's part of the song and dance. If people want to have faith that he's coming (I'm one of them) then fair play. If he doesn't come he doesn't come but I'm not getting in a negative mind state about it yet. I believe he will come.

It was the same with Mane to Southampton. They also had a not for sale stance but in the end it was Mane who pulled the plug and forced the move.

Leipzig do not need money, they want to keep Keita because he is a vital player for them. The problem for Keita is that if he burns bridges with Leipzig and Liverpool fail to meet the asking price then Keita ends up losing and Liverpool face another tapping up situation.

Very dangerous game to play for both Keita and Liverpool. This is all going to come down to Keita forcing his way out.

Agree8 Disagree2

08 Jul 2017 08:46:58
He is not coming chaps and sounds like if we continue to push then we msy be reported to FIFA on the grounds of more tapping up. I can not beleive our club are still monitoring or what ever it is we are doing, certainly no bid has gone in. Wasting time that could be used chasing other CM's, CB's and LB's.

I can not believe how bad we are in the transfer market. Between the apology and getting highly inflated prices we are crippled. I know klopp says to be patient but I would of liked players a part of preseason so they better get a move on. We need 3 more players. A good left back. A centre back and a top striker.

We also need to shift sakho, Moreno karius.

It's ok for klopp to say this but he has always been an advocate of early business and getting players settled in preseason so I can not help but feel our current team could be it going into the season.

Liverpool have mucked it up again with Keita just like they did with VVD.

It has been made known that Keita wants to join Liverpool without Liverpool approaching Leipzig. End game for Liverpool = tapping up.

It will be best for Liverpool to move on from Keita. Obviously the club ain't learning and play with fire, you will get burned.

Why are FSG not putting an end to this matter? They need to show authority as the circus will be on display again at Anfield if this continues. Clear lack of leadership at the club!

It is too late for Liverpool to approach Leipzig now. They should have done it from the start instead of warming up to the player i. e. the same situation as VVD. FIFA will have a field day.

08 Jul 2017 09:27:29
Stop getting carried away with the tapping up stuff.
Mistakes have been made but the Keita deal is a typical transfer with us wanting the player and willing to pay what is required to secure his services. PSG want Coutinhio doesn't mean they tapping him up by declaring an interest and every player has a price tag these days it's how football is.

Mistakes were made with VVD but if he submits a transfer request then he will leave Southampton.

Everton didn't want to sell lukaku but Chelsea and united both went in with large offers, both bid the same fee but united played the smart move by tipping the agent more.

Keita wants the move so it will happen, no doubt about it.

Agree15 Disagree4

08 Jul 2017 09:45:02
Redx what are you talking about? you make me want to bang my head against a wall.

You call this a mistake? no mate a mistake is when you step on somebodys toe, fart when somebodys eating, accidentally pop a kids balloon or send a text to the second misses when it was meant to be the other, not when you tap up a player, how is that a mistake? The club knew exactly what they were doing it's no mistake it's plain and simple stupid! No wonder we're getting carried away with it. Some of us care about the image of Liverpool.

I can't get my head about how some people can defend these actions, it NEVER happened before so why is it ok to do such things now? it's made us look disgraceful. What winds me up either more is comments like ' every club does it' no they dont! - there's a reason why we are the only ones in the news for it.

Agree9 Disagree14

08 Jul 2017 09:48:17
Redx, it is laughable that you bring the Lukaku situation into this. Both Chelsea and UTD have made offers for Lukaku. That is the difference. There have been no stories flying about of Lukaku making it known that he wants to join UTD.

Liverpool have not even approached Leipzig yet Keita has spoken to his club about wanting to move to Liverpool.

You clearly do not understand the severity of the situation.

Stop the daily obsession with Keita it's getting boring!

Agree11 Disagree4

08 Jul 2017 10:30:38
I have never seen such an obsession on these pages over such a run of the mill player.

People talk about him like he is a seasoned veteran with 3 CL titles or something. There is absolutely no perspective here. The hype band wagon is fully loaded up with people convinced he is world class.

Maybe he is, or will be. However you only have to look at Leicester for plenty of examples as to why you don't pay big bucks for players after one good season in a mid table team. Chelsea took a £30m risk on Kante which paid off. Yet look at the likes of Kasper, Huth, Morgan, Drinkwater, Mahrez, King, Vardy etc. They were all lauded as top class players. Mahrez was apparently world class and there were talks of £80m bids from Barcelona! The same is currently happening with every Leipzig player. In reality, maybe one or two of their players are actually the meat, and the rest are just bone.

Keita may be the Kante of the team, who knows. But if even Kante was only valued at £30m after a stunning season in the Premier League in which he actually won the title, how is Keita worth double or as some reports suggest, triple that figure after a single season in which he failed to push his team on to the title?

It is clear Keita is a good player. Nobody can say how good though. It is purely speculation, prediction and assumption. He could be a Kante, or he could be a Drinkwater. If the figure was £30m I'd say take the punt. But £70-100m? And some people are trying to justify it? I'm still not buying it.

Then we have the cheek to laugh at United paying mega bucks for Pogba and Lukaku! Oh the irony.

Move on people. There are 1,000s of midfielders in Europe and I'm sure Keita is not the best option. Certainly not at the £100m RBLs chairman just suggested!

Agree10 Disagree17

08 Jul 2017 11:41:18
Keita will sign.

Poker need to stop banging on about tapping up. It's is rife in football and other team sports. Part of business I'm afraid. Business isn't all sunshine and rainbows and if you think that it is then the world must be a very rosey place for you to live with your unicorn and pixies.

Even 'legitimate' deals have add ons, agent incentives and gifts. united and Chelsea bid the same figure for lukaku except the agent got a lot more from the united offer. so that's where his client is heading.

We have yet to be punished for any transfer outside our youth system and if it does come it shall be probably as severe as Ashley cole disgrace for Chelsea.

But until then pipe down about it all cos we will be signing Keita. possibly as early as next week. Let's support the lad and the team.

I agree with you MK about the price but this summer most transfers for teams in champions league will be inflated.

Agree6 Disagree2

{Ed025's Note - tapping up is not "part of business" redx, its cheating and bribery and very wrong so dont try to condone it mate..

Mark my words Keita will sign and no tapping up allegations will be made either so chill out. Boom.

Agree5 Disagree2

{Ed025's Note - all im saying mate is that you dont want the name of LFC to be tainted any more than it is now and saying that other clubs act in this despicable way does not make it right..

08 Jul 2017 12:15:36
Hahah I agree Ed025, we can talk about left backs now!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - You need to understand that within European football Liverpool's behavior is worse than any other club. You clearly don't know anything of the Chelsea situation otherwise you would not have made such a stupid remark. You also seem to ignore the fact that a very significant fine was handed out to Everton for tapping up, and indeed that Liverpool are already serving one ban at the moment and have a pending court case that could have further repercussions. The last season the Liverpool were in Europe they faced more charges with UEFA than any other side. On two occasions the owners and the board have had to issue humiliating apologies to try and avoid charges - and one of those has not been withdrawn. Klopp deliberately unsettled players by taking several journalists aside and briefing them in order to deliberately unsettle the four targets he was sure he could sign this summer. Klopp made illegal and direct approaches to three of those players - that is tapping up. The club is not one of the "elite" European sides that meet a couple of times a year and plan the future - they are excluded from that. Certain clubs will not do business with Liverpool because of the way they behave. Liverpool need to sort their act out or they need to accept there are potentially very serious consequences. Right now they are bottom of the pile in European football.}

Hi Eds
Why is this kind of under the radar? I know it's done to death on here, but media wise you don't really see anything about tapping up. Obviously the VVD was well reported, but this has been going on for at lot longer. Just interested.

Agree0 Disagree2

{Ed025's Note - because contrary to what people think on here its not that common mate, tapping up is quite serious and if the press get wind of it they are all over it like a bun on a boloni sandwitch, but most clubs play by the rules as far as im aware janmo..

08 Jul 2017 14:17:26
Thanks for the swift response. I find it really frustrating that all the hard work we have put in getting back into the champions league, and we could go in under cooked. If you want a player just put a decent bid in. Thanks great site.

Teabag why is it delusional to think Keita will be a Liverpool player?

Enough people want to bad mouth Liverpool transfer activity on here yet RB have not and will not be making a complaint and Keita will sign for us.

all parties will be happy with the outcome.

Agree5 Disagree5

{Ed002's Note - How do you know that they will not make a complaint. They don't wish to sell a player who Liverpool have illegally approached and tapped up. You are an idiot.}

08 Jul 2017 15:39:54
This is the longest repeat active thread I have seen on here for a while xD

I don’t see why we need to 'tap-up' players. But if we are that desperate and stupid why don’t we do it the smart way like Barca?
By this I mean Neymar has tried to convince Coutinho to join them and spoke to the press about him a lot.
We should get a player to do it then the club can be like "well he really likes him, not our fault" xD.

Agree0 Disagree2

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool have already used a player to tap up others on behalf of the club - and not even players he knew. So that is worse.}

08 Jul 2017 20:21:29

Every club that Mourinho managed tried to sign Gerrard.

On international duty Lampard and Terry were full time in his ear.

Fergie tried twice to sign him; same crack as above with Scholes and Neville in his ear.

Yap Stam told everyone in his book that Fergie had illegally approached him.
Thats why Fergie offloaded him.

The list could go on and on and not just transfers.

The russians doping scandle.

Look at Platini, Beckenbaur, Quatar The scams at Rangers involving players trusts.

The chairnan at Marseilles i think was jailed .

Even Ed mentioned about a champs league match that was suspicious.

I'd say there are many more as well but football is now big business and companies and clubs will try and do what they can to gain an advantage.

Agree9 Disagree7

07 Jul 2017 17:28:10
I know we have a few but out and out wide players we have mane and Salah and then coutinho and lallana who can play there, though I think we lose some of lallana out wide. Say we start hendo couts and lallana in the middle, we don't really have a direct replacement out wide, or of one gets injured.
United have lingard, martial, mhk, mata, and rashford all capable there, Chelsea have hazard, pedro Willian and a few youngsters.
Wouldn't surprise me if we went for another that's all I'm saying.

07 Jul 2017 21:28:47

Lots of people are upset about our transfer activity so far this summer and I have to extend my sympathies to the Eds for what they have to put up with. I thought I’d try and read between the lines a bit to try and understand what's happened so far this season and what's going on now. This is, of course, complete guess work but it may help some understand why we haven’t finished our transfer activity yet.

Ahead of the this summer Klopp had a couple of main priorities, a second top class wide player and fixing the left back position. We needed a wide man because of an over-reliance on Mane and at LB, despite Milner doing a decent job, Klopp wanted more pace and a left foot there. CB was a concern but not the priority (hence Lovren’s new contract and the assurances that were given to Gomez early on) . Two things have changed since the early planning, the (apparent) availability of VVD and the potential need for CM if Coutinho or Can leave.

The wide man is easiest to deal with as Salah’s already here. Klopp wanted Brandt but Brandt wasn’t sure so we moved on to another target who wanted to come to us and who’s club were content to sell to us, this was completed in fairly good order. LB has been far more problematic. Kolasinac chose Arsenal, Mendy appears to have chosen City and Tierney is content where he is so none of the players Klopp wanted were available (Sessegnon was one for the future not the first team) . Klopp will go for Robertson if he has to but the fact that he’s not a Liverpool player yet suggests we’re exploring other options. If it gets to August and no other option has become available I expect Robertson to come in then.

The VVD saga has caused problems. I expect when Lovren signed his contract he was expecting to be first choice but this that changed when VVD expressed an interest in joining us. Lovren now knows that Klopp is not satisfied with him and I expect Klopp doesn’t want to rely on an unsettled CB, therefore, by circumstance, CB has become a priority. I understand there is still a hope that a deal with Saints can be made whilst Saints will be hoping they can sell to someone else but, if there are no other takers, they may be prepared to speak to Liverpool again. Therefore Liverpool are biding their time, they are looking at other options if VVD doesn’t come but they are hoping that they get another chance and are prepared to wait.

The CM story is different again. With the danger of Can not signing a contract or Coutinho leaving for mega-bucks it was prudent to start looking at replacements and Keita was identified as an option. My suspicion is that something has happened behind the scene and it is now expected that either Can or Coutinho will be elsewhere next season and Keita went from an option to a primary target. I doubt Liverpool will let Coutinho leave without a replacement being identified so that deal will depend on RBL agreeing to sell Keita (and may also explain their high asking price) or an alternative of similar quality becoming available. This saga will likely rumble on for the rest of the summer.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is separate to all this. I expect this is another unexpected opportunity. On paper O-C seems to be a good fit for Klopp and Klopp would be happy to bring in a player who can cover any position across the midfield. Right now the ball is with O-C and his agent, they are waiting to see who offers them the best deal, Arsenal, Liverpool or maybe someone else. With the player due back in training shortly I expect he’ll want to make a decision soon.

In summary I expect O-C to make a decision on his future shortly, Liverpool will look to bring in a LB to join pre-season as soon as possible with Robertson being the player they go for if no better option presents itself. Meanwhile Klopp is prepared to wait on VVD’s availability and Leipzig will hold out for as much of the Coutinho money as they can get.

Believable11 Unbelievable18

07 Jul 2017 13:09:26
I don't think Robertson will wait till August 31 to move clubs. Two clubs are taking to hull and a decision has to be made soon, not haggle around!
Keita and Coutinho are completely unrelated! The club and the manager will face riot from supporters if Coutinho is sold!

Agree15 Disagree3

07 Jul 2017 13:51:20
I agree with if you know me. Coutinho is staying, I have no doubt.

I agree with Putneyred on VVD. Liverpool will wait to see if anyone else approaches and if not, I'd expect an offer and acceptance in late August.

As for left backs, I don't know what to expect.

I hope we get Keita, VVD and a proper LB because if we do, I genuinely believe we would have the squad to challenge on all fronts.

YNWA.

Agree14 Disagree1

07 Jul 2017 14:02:05
What if coutinho wants to leave and tries to give it through, would the riot still go ahead. It tickles me that we moan if players want to go even if we don't want to sell, but if we want a player who the other club don't want to sell we want them to force the move! We will get deals done if a player and club are happy with the move and we pay the money required, simples😉.

Don't worry Putney Red, the Eds don't do this at the point of a gun.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - it is mild torture I use to force them, no guns involved.}

07 Jul 2017 14:32:00
I find it highly unlikely that coutinho will be leaving. Not only have the club shown no sign that we would be willing to sell but more importantly phil himself has given no indication that he wants to leave. In fact he has gone the opposite way and not even sounded vague about it. Also the fact that Barcelona aren't interested is even better for us. There is no way he is leaving us for PSG before playing in champions league which he continues to say how excited he is for.

Agree2 Disagree0

08 Jul 2017 00:26:18
I doubt Coutinho would leave for any club other than Barcelona. He definitely wouldn't go to another EPL club and it makes little sense for him to go to PSG, unless they offered him a crazy amount of money and he was money-hungry, but he doesn't seem to be like that. Mu gut feeling and reson tell me Coutinho is quite happy to stay with us for another season and reassess his options later. playing for a great club, under a great coach y now with the opportunity of CL, which is what he wanted. JK needs to continue to build a strong squad with the likes of the players we're being linked with (VVD, Keita etc) and our top players will have even less of a reason to leave. Plus LFC is a family and there will always be players that appreciate that and want to stay. Coutinho looks like that type of player in my opinion.

Agree2 Disagree1

08 Jul 2017 20:33:16
Vvd is worth pushing for. Kieta isn't worth the money and our current midfielders are just as good if not better. Keep hearing people say he helped his team qualify for champions league, well so did lallana Hendo can wijnaldum and coutinio. In a much much tougher league. Kieta is not half the player pogba is and would cost almost as much. We would be ridiculed. He is not the player everyone here thinks he is.

Question for Ed002, hopefully to put the Keita 'release clause' (or whatever it is called) to be.

Been reported widely that Keita can leave for £48m next summer. Some of the posters here have taken that to mean 'lets leave him this season and buy him next season for £48m'.

However, Ed002, I'm sure you said that the relevant clause is nothing to do with Liverpool.

Does that mean its only relevant to certain clubs i. e. German clubs only, or Bayern Munich only etc?

Like I said, trying to stop people barking up the wrong tree with this one, as many seem to think we can save money and waltz in next year and get the player.

Thanks

Z.

Believable4 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - If it is a "release clause" it can only be enacted by a club in the same legal jurisdiction that the contract was written in. People still use the term "buy out" clauses which are clearly very rare.

Perhaps a reminder about transfer related clauses would be apt. This is a horribly complex area not least because they are written under individual national laws. They cause a great deal of misunderstanding with football supporters and the media alike.

The "buy out" clause is legally binding between a club and a player. The "buy out" is effectively what it says - a means for the player to buy himself out of the contract. As an example, if a player wishes to buy himself out of a contract, he pays the applicable FA (on behalf of the club) the amount of the "buy out" clause effectively becoming a free agent. The problem is that in most cases a player would need to obtain that money from the buying club - and this is fraught with issues regarding "tapping up" and, of course, taxation (as it can be seen as income for the player and would therefore be subject to income tax). There was a test case about the taxation issue in Spain about four years ago. So "buy out" clauses are very rare.

A "release clause" is far more common in that it gives a figure that the club would accept for the sale of a player to another club - but it is not legally binding except where both parties are in the same country (for the sake of argument I should say that Spain and Portugal count as the same country as do England and Wales) for legal purposes. These are normally unreasonably high figures (Messi at Barcelona for example) introduced to act as a deterrent for hostile bids - and even then the club could easily block a move. However, if a club does agree to match a release clause then the selling club would be obliged to ask the player if he is interested - there is no obligation on the player to make a move. For interested clubs outside of the country the selling club may use it as a guide but are under obligation to accept a bid.

There is then the becoming popular "termination clause" which is binding between the player and the club and if met would see an offer from anywhere accepted and the player given the opportunity to make a call on a move. This overcomes the issues associated with "buy out" clauses as the money would be paid by one club to another.}

07 Jul 2017 12:42:08
Thanks for taking the time to write such a comprehensive summary, really helps me with understanding the various options.

So, if as reported, Keita has a "release clause" then its irrelevant to us buying him next year, except as a guide for the price. As we are not a German club, we could offer the amount of the "release clause" (say £48m for arguments sake as that's what's been reported) and RBL could still say no. However, a German club (Bayern, for instance) could offer the £48m and, as long as Keita is amenable to the move, RBL would HAVE to sell him for that amount.

As its a release clause being reported, rather than a termination clause, then we have no better chance of getting RBL to agree to sell Keita next year than this year.

{Ed002's Note - If he has a release clause, in broad terms yes. However, it certainly would not be in Pounds nor would any offer from Liverpool.

RBL met with an English side over another player yesterday and I understand that the first thing they stressed was that the club should not contact the player in any way or form - they haven't - but they were adamant that they should get their point across.

I suspect the Keita issue will drag on.}

I am copying your Reply Ed02 and should be pasting into various groups ( with your consent ) as people around the globe are throwing random speculations on these clauses!

Eds are you with me in thinking that Liverpool are wasting there time chasing Keita when you have made it clear they have no thoughts on selling him what so ever. You just said it will likely drag on and on so I don't see why we are wasting our time when we could be chasing a differant player?

{Ed002's Note - There is nothing to stop them putting abid in - but if they are keen an embarrisingly low one would likely be shrugged at. They could persist and perhaps be reported to FIFA?}

Hi Ed, are RBL open to selling that other player to the other English club, or is it another case of show me a eye watering offer and we will consider? Just thinking that if they do that would probably be even less likely that they would part with many more (if any)?

{Ed002's Note - Perhps but it is unrelated.}

Cheers for reply ed. Knowing most of our bids for other players it will be embarrasingly low. Walk away I say.

Just read back what you said ed. If we persist we could be reported to FIFA! what a shambles. Am I alone in thinking we need to walk away, why waste so much time on a player they won't sell. Ridiculous beyond words!

Eds, brilliant explanation thanks . but what exactly is the point of a release clause? If the club doesn't want to sell then why would they include one? I understand if it's used as a deterrent but we see time and time again that clubs including LFC go in with bids under that anyway.

I've heard Mammana and DAHOUD, instead of VVD and Keita.

Dahoud has just joined Dortmund so that's a non starter.

Would like Dalbert although grimaldi is better. Mammana would be more of a gamble. Shouldn't be hard for him to get a game as apart from matip, who wasn't perfect either, our cbs were awful.
