Hi Eds,

If you don't mind I have a question regarding home grown players.

If the parent Club loans a player out during one or many of the years to qualify for Home Grown then is this seen as club trained or does the player have to spend the whole time at the parent club to qualify?

{Ed002's Note - Home Grown means spending three years befoe turning 21 playing under the same FA - regardless of club. So Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner, Joe Gomez, Jordan Henderson and Nathanial Phillips are all Home Grown. Club Developed means spending 12 months before their 19th birthday at the club - so Caoimhin Kelleher and Trent Alexander-Arnold are the Club Developed first team squad members.}

Thanks Ed much appreciated; therefore Harvey Elliot will count as Club developed.

{Ed002's Note - It does not become relevant until the players are 21.}

Joe Gomez signed for Liverpool when he was 18. Is he not club trained as well as home grown?

{Ed002's Note - No, obviously he can’t be.}

Thanks again Ed002.

Hi Ed002, please don't jump down my throat if I'm wrong - we don't all have your expertise (hence the questions) . BUT, if being 'club-developed' is dependent upon “A player who has been registered with their current team for at least 12 months prior to the [END] of their U19 season” Does Gomez not qualify as club-developed? I've taken the quote (my own emphasis) from a BBC article in 2017 when the rule was agreed. Also, the EFL official site says: "For Season 2020/ 21 this means any Player aged 24 or under on 1 January 2021, and for Season 2021/ 22 this means any Player aged 24 or under on 1 January 2022." as guidance at the end of rule 33.12.2 (Joe Gomez is under 24 on 1.1.21). I'm just asking because if it is not the case then their wording is particularly bad.

{Ed002's Note - It is before their 19th birthday. Gomez is no club developed.}

Sorry Ed002 I clearly didn't read where you'd already indicated JG is homegrown. but I must admit I still find their wording and overlaps rather unclear at points with an unsuitable amount of ambiguity and obscurity. Please ignore my original post. although I'd be very interested in how you view the language used by official channels when bringing in rules that are agreed upon in meetings.

{Ed002's Note - I think you have misunderstood the EFL rules - that rule is not defining "club developed".}

Liverpool named a 24 man squad for the Champions League for this season. They didn't have enough club trained players to name the full quota of 25. 17 players are classed as foreign. Out of the remaining 8 players 4 players need to be club trained and 4 can be trained under the same English association. These are Milner, Henderson, Oxlade Chamberlain and Elliott (even though he has now left on loan) who cannot be picked as an under 21 player as he needs to have been at the club for 2 years. This leaves Kelleher, Trent Alexander Arnold and Gomez as the club trained players.
