Word on the jude bellingham rumour vine is that Liverpool are trying to secure him on a pre deal for January.

Wouldn't there need to be a gap in the squad for that to happen?
He ain't signing at Christmas to sit it out until next season, that's for sure.

In the words of Ed002: don't hold your breath.

This will be milners last year as a player and also the ox will be off either before the window shuts (unlikely now he’s injured) or free agent next year
And possibly naby if his contract isn’t resolved

So their is definitely room coming very soon I’d say room for 2.

He also said that about nunez
Kk7 . I think things change in football very quickly and we just have to enjoy this season as I think this could be a very very special 1 indeed.

There might be room for 3 if Naby doesn't extend.
But that still doesn't leave a gap at Christmas.

Dhfc: You will get no arguments from me on that score, look how close we came to perfection last year.

I just prefer to concentrate on the players who are currently occupying a reds jersey, rather than getting caught up in a rumour that has no basis in fact, and if said player ends up going elsewhere which of course would be his choice, this site ends up going into a meltdown.

I Would love Jude to become a red but i won't throw my toys out of the pram if he ends up at Man city or Real Madrid.

Ox doesn’t play much, Millie is a utility player now - a stopgap if we have an injury in the midfield or at right (and sometimes left) back and Naby was, towards the back end of last season, basically the 4th choice for midfield behind Fabs, Hendo and Thiago. To be honest I can’t see us needing to buy 3 players or even 2 for that matter. Jones, Elliot, Carvalho, Morton and Bajcetic would seem capable of providing the necessary cover. We might need one ‘game changing’ signing - perhaps Bellingham.

{Ed001's Note - I am not sure Morton will provide much cover this season while on loan at Blackburn mate.}

@Ed01 - a very good point ? although I think the argument still stands with the other three (Elliot, Carvalho and Bajcetic) covering for this season and, presumably Morton back for next season.

I was interested in Pep Lijnders’ comments the other day that our transfer policy is shifting to focus on bringing in Academy players and the occasional ‘game changer’ like Diaz and Nunez (and perhaps Bellingham next? ) rather than pre-Klopp days when there was no real established path from the Academy into the first team squad and we tended to buy players who could (at best) do a job in their position but weren’t necessarily a step up on what we had.

{Ed001's Note - I do agree with what you are saying and Lijnders is just saying what should happen at every club. I never understand why some teams even bother with an academy as they have no interest in looking at players in the ranks. It should always be about only signing genuine top players to fill gaps in the team, while using the academy to fill all the gaps in the squad. With the aim that youngsters grow from squadfillers to first team regulars.}

Naby was 4th choice last season but after a couple of weeks I see him being 5th choice at best this season with Elliott moving ahead of him and maybe even Carvalho.

@Ed01 - I think you could make a very good case that the best work we have been doing for the past couple of years is with the Academy - bringing everyone together at Kirby and the focus on coaching the same system at all age levels and both the youth recruitment (local and otherwise) and the planning and execution of a genuine plan for those deemed as being likely future first team squad calibre is much better than in pre-Klopp times.

I’m not an expert on such things but it seems we were searching for replacements for specific players rather than working towards a top quality squad that was a framework for consistency and quality.

As you say, all clubs should be doing it but very few do and it’s really encouraging that we seem to be doing it and that we seem to have people who understand why and how we should be doing it.

{Ed001's Note - agree completely with that.}

03 Aug 2022 10:18:00
Ed001, please apply for the Chelsea Director of Football role. We need someone at the club that understands the talents we sign from elsewhere are often worse than the ones we have in house.

{Ed001's Note - I have never understood that about Chelsea. It seems like those players developed are purely seen as a way of making money. Academies making money should be a by product of doing well, rather than the aim.}

03 Aug 2022 10:36:43
Absolutely no idea here but if someone does sign Bellingham does he not require a squad place due to his age and being home grown.

If you’re under 21 you don’t have to be named in the squad I believe. So does Elliot and Carvalho also come into that category?

03 Aug 2022 16:02:35
You’re right there JK. Squad places (and therefore HG/ CT etc) only applies to players who were 21 or over on 1 Jan 22 (for this season) . So Elliot, Carvalho, Ramsay, Bajcetic and even Curtis Jones all do not need a squad ‘place’.

03 Aug 2022 16:02:47
Neither would Bellingham, btw!

03 Aug 2022 22:28:46
@Flash, with regards to bringing Bellingham in at Christmas (which I am not saying we will) there is a precedent with Diaz in last January’s window.

We were very well covered up front at the time but we jumped in when someone else looked close to buying him.

Again, not saying we will just that we might.

Are Dortmund likely to sell their most valuable asset during the winter window? I just don't see it. I don't think they're in any financial trouble either so that's not an incentive for them to sell. Diaz was bought with the knowledge that Mane wasn't signing a new contract so there was always a major gap to be filled.
It just seems more like fan desperation to me than any real possibility of it happening.

{Ed001's Note - I am pretty sure he has already promised Dortmund to stay for the season.}

I'm pretty sure one of their manager or one of their directors confirmed that recently too.
