Man Utd have just had a bid accepted for Yoro. Will we match it Eds considering we are chasing him and being opportunistic in the market?

{Ed002's Note - He wants to move to Real Madrid.}

I don’t think we will offer €50 mill for a 19 year old kid. I am no expert on finances but going by the look we have cash in hand.

Hi Ed,
I know you have wrote update about andre trindade, alan varela, khephren thuram and other DM players that liverpool already not interesting anymore. Can you share which one of players that liverpool looking up to now? knowing Endo itself has said on the one of interview that the club should find another DM. I know that we still have Bajcetic but i think its to heavy for him to cover our lost on Thiago and Fabinho.
Appreciate if you share your thoughts. thank you and have a great day.

{Ed002's Note - The list is getting shorter:
Joshua Kimmich (DM/RB) Having agreed the move for Palhinha, Bayern Munich will make Kimmich available, a significant fee of perhaps €45M would be sought - perhaps beyond what interested sides Barcelona or Manchester City would pay for a 29 year old on €400k per week in the last year of his contract although both clubs may well look to find a solution that suits everybody with Barcelona willing to let a player move as part of a deal. Al Ahli may offer a solution in the Middle East.

A wildcard option would be a move to replace Ugarte at PSG which would suit Manchester United who see him as a cheaper option to Neves. There is interest from Liverpool and Arsenal but it will likely go nowhere. The player has said he would like to play for Manchester City. New coach will have a say at Bayern Munich and that could lead to a one year extension. The player can be a serious pain in the neck for coaches.

Teun Koopmeiners (DM/CM) Atalanta are reluctant to sell but his agent wants the player to be playing regularly in the Champions League with Newcastle, Juventus and Napoli having declared interest. Interest of Milan shifted to Tijjani Reijnders so they can be discounted. Liverpool offer a good option for the player but will be reluctant to meet the asking price - but they are very keen.

Approaches were been made to Arsenal, Manchester United, Spurs and Chelsea although none have spoken with Atalanta and all have other targets for now but cannot be discounted. Brighton and Aston Villa interest has gone. Juventus has a creative solution and will push for a summer move knowing that the player wants Juventus move. Marseille have walked away due to the quoted cost although a change of ownership could see a huge shift for them. Atalanta are seeking €60M if pressed to sell and feeling is Liverpool or Juventus will win out, most probably Juventus.

Alan Varela (DM) Barcelona may offer a profit to Porto and a player in exchange. PSG has a declared interest. An option for Manchester City to replace Phillips, but not first choice although they have spoken with Porto. Bayern Munich consider him an option to replace Kimmich.

Liverpool are following up on several scouting missions to see if something can be done. Chelsea sent scouts but no more. Dortmund will not match his buy out clause. Porto has no interest in selling the player who only joined them in the summer of 2023 unless someone offered his buy out clause in a single payment, then the player will be consulted. €70M

Manu Kouadio Kone (CM/DM) Prior interest of Milan has gone. Newcastle did approach Borussia Muenchegladbach but they will resist a sale although Newcastle remain keen. RBL were keen to add Kone to replace Laimer but that interest, like the interest of Bayern Munich has now gone away. Juventus and Liverpool may have a continuing interest but he will not be first choice for either. Napoli offer a wildcard option but are concerned by muscular injuries.

Joao Neves (DM/CM) Discussed with Chelsea when meeting over another player as they were seeking a replacement for Loftus-Cheek. Potential Casemiro replacement for Manchester United. Huge buy out clause and Benfica will not look to sell but recognise there will be growing interest and will insist that the buy out clause is met. Liverpool and Manchetser City have sent scouts. Versatile but falls over easily. I expect Manchester United to push even having a first offer rejected.

Adrian Rabiot (CM/DM) Juventus are looking to replace their midfield misfits. They are looking to sell and move off the wage bill players they no longer want in order to fund replacements they have already identified. As a free agent, Rabiot will, like every other player, be offered to Newcastle.

A third party has been instructed to find him a new home and whilst he could have been used in part exchanges previously he has let his contract run down and will leave as a Free Agent in the summer. Liverpool offer an unlikely, at least to me, solution. MIlan and Real Madrid offer wildcard options. Wage demands will be excessive.

Douglas Luiz (CM/DM) No.
Archie Gray (DM/CM/RB) No.
Andre Trindade (DM) No.
Kalvin Phillips (DM) No.
Ezequiel Fernandez (DM) No.
Joao Palhinha (DM/CM) No
Martin Zubimendi (CM/DM) No.
Morten Frendrup (CM/DM) No.
Khephren Thuram (DM/CM) No.
Assan Ouedraogo (CM/DM) No.}

Thank you so much Ed. Up the Reds! ????.

09 Jul 2024 15:36:34
Any chance for Mikel Merino maybe Ed? I have read that liverpool previously was interested on merino last summer.

I think liverpool should discount kimmich considering his wages and the player more interested to join pep at man city.

{Ed002's Note - None.}

Hi Ed2, thanks for a very detailed overview! Do we hold an interest in Ederson? Didn't see his name on your list. Cheers.

{Ed002's Note - Yes but he is not a DM player really. Fty searching.}

Nice update Ed.

Based on the new shortened list it would appear that Koopmeiners and Varela offer the best chances of us signing a DM. Personally I'd be happy with either.

Personally I don't see €60/ 70M as a huge outlay given that DM is our major problem area.

Kimmich, Neves, Koopmeiners and Rabiot don’t improve our starting 11 one bit. None of them are effective defensive midfielders or would offer any more protection to our defence than anyone we already have. Kimmich is massively over rated and too old, nothing more than a happy shopper Lahm who has been found out and dumped back at right back for both Bayern and Germany, if the manager thinks Can is a better defensive midfielder than you, then you’ve got problems.

Neves is way too expensive, don’t see the fuss and from what Ed has said, seems to be a bit of a soft lad which is not a quality you look for in a defensive midfielder. Koopmeiners doesn’t play defensive midfield for Atalanta, it’s De Roon and Ederson who sit at the base of midfield and Koopmeiners is one of the attacking midfielders, to me he’s about the same as Mac Allister, if Mac was leaving he’d be an ideal replacement but as he isn’t, then I don’t see that he offers anything we don’t already have.

Rabiot simply isn’t good enough. Too slow, too lumbering, not particularly good on the ball, not particularly good defensively and for a big lad he doesn’t use his physicality at all, either in the air or to win challenges, every time I’ve seen him he looks incredibly lazy, hasn’t set the world alight wherever he’s been and at his age he’s only going to get worse.

Kone has injury issues, which feels like a reason to pass him by and Varela seems more like Fernandez type which is really a defensive midfielder as Chelsea have expensively found out.

If that’s the pool we’re choosing from then it is very slim pickings and I don’t mean the actor from Blazing Saddles.

I think we may end up with Trent playing DM. Would absolutely be the wrong call. We need to bring someone in badly.

09 Jul 2024 16:48:16
I'm just here for Victor's expert analysis.

09 Jul 2024 17:33:32
Joao Neves doesn’t improve our starting 11…. WOW, the lad is going to be fire and would be an amazing signing for your however I think he is actually out of our reach in terms of cost and reckon he will end up at City.

09 Jul 2024 17:57:46
Maybe VV expected another DM player like Christian Poulsen or Jay Spearing ??.

09 Jul 2024 18:55:16
Viktor, MacAllister could well be gone next season. One of the Eds said he is on Real’s list for 2025 So do we wait for him to leave and lose out on a potential replacement this season? Or do we bed someone in and give us ourselves another option in CM?

09 Jul 2024 19:14:43
Real will need to play 2-6-2 at this rate.
What is the release clause for Alexis?

09 Jul 2024 19:22:40
Is Viktor like Candyman or Beetlejuice? Say Kimmich three times and he appears?

09 Jul 2024 19:46:58
My best friend's mum's best friend is friends with a woman who has a son that is friends with someone who works at Liverpool and apparently we're getting valverde. Just passing on what I've been told.

09 Jul 2024 20:34:56
The only player VV likes in the entire world is Mbappe.

09 Jul 2024 21:08:55
VV has also said he really likes Ederson in a thread below.
Plenty knocking VV but I enjoy his posts and opinions, not a sheep that's for sure and stands by his beliefs. It's good to have on a Banter site.

09 Jul 2024 17:37:40
Ed02, is Ugarte on that list or is he is going to Manchester? Also was there really a meeting between Mendes and Liverpool representatives last week?

{Ed002's Note - I don't think Ugarte is an option any longer.}

09 Jul 2024 23:00:50
Rabiot is a big lad?

10 Jul 2024 06:52:11
Yes as long as we remember that it is only opinion and not fact. I like Rabiot as a player and he certainly Isn’t slow and very good on the ball but I would have a concern about his desire in the cut and thrust of the Premier League.

10 Jul 2024 07:54:24
Victor you say that you don't like Kimmich, Neves, Koopmeiners and Rabiot because they are not effective defensive midfielders. However you then seem to say you don't like Varela because "seems more like Fernandez type which is really a defensive midfielder". Im not trying to pull holes in your argument - just wondering is there some words missing there? Or is my comprehension poor?

11 Jul 2024 06:12:19
I actually agree with VV here. I don't think the players mentioned are as bad as what he says, but if that's the pool we are looking at then I'd rather go with Endo and give opportunities to Bajcetic, Morton and McConnell as cover.

11 Jul 2024 08:46:07
My pick of the lot would be Neves, no brainer. He has potential to be world class but we're not getting him.

Ederson good option but seems unlikely to happen.

I liked Kone when we were linked to him at the start of last season but I'd avoid now due to injuries.

Varela might be alright. I think he has the right attributes and could form a solid partnership with Macca in the midfield.
