Marc Guehi is wanted by Liverpool, who have begun negotiations to sign the 24-year-old Crystal Palace and England defender. (Fabrizio Romano via GiveMeSport)

He actually said that no negotiations had taken place but that we hold concrete interest.

According to Romano:
"But at the moment, I can't tell you that Liverpool are negotiating for Marc Guehi, because at the moment, the situation is quiet around him. Obviously there is the Euros, so after the Euros, we will see the appreciation of Liverpool for the player.
"I can confirm to you, but not only Liverpool - there are also other clubs, for example Arsenal and many others who appreciate the player. But in terms of the bid, in terms of the negotiations, it is a different story. "

I’d hope we don’t follow up on this one. Can’t head a ball to save his life and isn’t particularly effective against physically strong attackers. Wildly over rated.
{Ed025's Note - another on the VV i dont rate list, that makes 543 up to now.. :)

I actually thought that Marc Guehi was one of Englands stand out players.

What was he like for Palace, that’s the discriminator for me.
International football and defenders is too much of a minefield. If he was good in the premier league then I’m interested.

Thought it was more than 600 Ed, I’ve not seen any player viktor has rated.
{Ed025's Note - thats only this weeks tally Nutter.. :)

Guehi is very similar to Konate but he's better with the ball and weaker in the air. Both are good 1v1 defenders, both are very committed to defending in the box, both have great recovery pace, but also both are a little rash with their decision making.
Wouldn't be the worst signing in the world but I think there are better options.

To be fair Ed, it’s not a lot to ask for a defender to be able to win the ball in the air, particularly when you’re looking at lashing out the thick end of £70m. If he wasn’t English no one would be interested. He’s a very ordinary defender at best and not better than anyone already at the club, we should only sign someone where the player will make a tangible positive difference and unfortunately I can’t see that he would improve us.
We conceded far too many soft goals last year, and all we would be doing is giving our opponents another easy route to goal by having a short arse centre back who can’t win headers. For the kind of money palace want, there’s better options out there and I’d put persuading VDB that he has a future at the club as a better option than wasting money on Guehi.
{Ed025's Note - i thought he performed well for England VV but i cant say i watched him much at palace, i imagine the price would put Liverpool off though mate..

So VV you think VDB would be better to keep than Guehi to buy? If this was the case, why are so many clubs put off by VDB £20m valuation? Surely a steal in your world.
I do agree that for the money being banded around for Guehi there are far better options around. It all depends on who wants to come.
I would go all out for Bastoni if he would come.

With him being a similar type of player to Konate, I would rather keep Konate. If he can't stay fit, means more games for JQ. As for Sepp, who knows what will happen with him. Hopefully he stays, seems decent enough. Teams are being put off the price tag because they want him on the cheap. Comparing a full international with someone who has play less than 200 games at a far lower level is a bit silly tbh.

I agree with VV to be honest. Any defender can get skinned on a bad day and the best defenders don't need pace to recover from having good positioning. But being aerially dominant is a must. It's such a boost when a team has a Hyypia or on form VVD type player in the backline to properly clear the ball every time a cross comes in. The panic that ensues from a poor headed clearance or loose ball is worse than any amount of good attacking players coming at your defence.
{Ed025's Note - im not sure that being great in the air is even a thing these days westwood, not many teams lump it up to the big fella up front now mate and good defenders just with strength and guile can stop a forward getting a clean header, i was never the biggest defender but nobody beat me in the air, but being able to jump like sock-eyed salmon helped i suppose.. :)

I'm with ed here most teams keep the ball on the floor these days so it's not as big a deal if a defender doesn't have a strong aerial duels rate. Positioning, timing and reading the game are more important to me - all of which guehi is good at.
