Salah confirmed he is not going this summer. Good news.
{Ed002's Note - Staying to run down his contract for a huge signing on fee next season.}
29 Aug 2024 11:03:20
Guess we had the opportunity to cash in a year ago and decided that keeping him was more important to the club.
{Ed002's Note - The club will look to a solution in the coming weeks if they can.}
29 Aug 2024 11:11:31
Ed002, may I ask if there were any bids for him this summer? or will any interested parties just wait the year.
{Ed002's Note - Bids might arrive in the next couple of weeks but I suspect he would want to run down his contract.}
29 Aug 2024 11:18:04
Yeh a shame to see him go for nothing alright but if there's a man who's earned that right it's Mo. Owes us nothing, still hopeful we tie him down for another year or 2 but all good things must come to an end unfortunately. Nobody bigger than the club, we've survived other club legends leaving and we will again. Let's hope if it is his swansong that he goes out with a bang!
29 Aug 2024 11:22:08
No chance of him seeing out the decade with the reds? I'd be happy to see him sign for at least 2 more years.
If it is the case that he is leaving, then will Kubo get signed in Jan or next summer?
29 Aug 2024 11:29:47
That's how I read it Ed002. I don't see it as him doing anything but running his contract down and getting a huge sum next year. Despite his impressive start, I still personally believe we should have sold him for the rumoured £150m and reinvested in a top CB and RW at the time.
29 Aug 2024 11:31:05
I think you’re right Ed.
29 Aug 2024 11:31:52
As a modern legend of the club I think he has earned that right if that is what he wants.
29 Aug 2024 11:37:34
Exactly. Strikes me as fair enough. He hasn't exactly been a bad servant to the club or poor value for what we paid for him. Unless Ed002 tells us it wasn't as simple as this, LFC had its chance to cash in on him last summer and didn't take it.
29 Aug 2024 11:40:43
If that’s the case, good luck to the lad.
Cost us £36.5 rising to £43m 7 years ago. He has been value for money and given excellent service (look at the PL records he has amassed) .
29 Aug 2024 11:41:55
‘Running down’ and ‘seeing out’ a contract are two very different ways of wording something that’s exactly the same. Glass half full/ glass half empty.
Personally I think he deserves it, and owes Liverpool no more than they owe him. Both sides have been perfectly respectful and professional during a massively successful relationship.
Looking forward to watching him play again this season and good luck to him in the future whether it’s here or somewhere else.
29 Aug 2024 11:53:45
It’s mad how he gets away with leaving every single summer since we signed him.
29 Aug 2024 11:55:33
He has given the club his best years and given us far more in return than the £36.9m we spent to bring him in. He will go down as one of the Premier Leagues best ever transfers. I would love to see him stay for another couple of years but if he walks off into the Saudi sunset next summer I will clap him out of the door and thank him for his service.
Great player, great professional and a great man. He is and always will be a Liverpool legend.
29 Aug 2024 11:55:56
It was poor management to have let him run down his contract and leave for free.
It was extremely poor management to let almost the 3 most important players of the team all in the same position.
29 Aug 2024 12:10:35
Club before player always .
If we decide to sell
If we decide to renew
Or let him leave for free next year . I actually feel ok with all options . We know we need to reinvest if he goes if he stays we have a quality player and if he’s going next year for free we have 10-12 months to identify and find the replacement.
All good things come to an end hopefully regardless of salah we continue to be a great team.

Thing is according to the eds, Salah and his agent has been looking for a big payout for a while, with proposing him to different clubs. Who knows this may have been his intention all along after signing the last extension see it out and then leave.
This is not me having a go at Salah at all. But we don't know what has been said behind closed doors.
{Ed001's Note - not eds, just Ed002. For me, his agent has 100% been looking for a way out, but that is not because of Salah looking for one, which is why he has been asking ridiculous money. As far as I have been able to find out, Mo has never wanted to leave but his agent wants the big payout, so he asks ridiculous money because otherwise Mo would have no interest.}
29 Aug 2024 12:25:34
It is club before player, if he goes for free it leaves us in a much weaker position.
29 Aug 2024 12:27:35
Thanks Ed001 apologies for my mix up.
{Ed001's Note - no worries SA. I don't tend to get involved in the discussions on him because it doesn't really matter as the offer was never incoming.}
29 Aug 2024 12:27:43
Can you see him signing an extension ed01?
{Ed001's Note - I have no idea. I don't think he knows himself yet. The thing with Salah is that he doesn't just want to make up the numbers, so he won't stay if he is not good enough to play regularly and contribute positively. I expect him to see if he can actually be at it all season this time around or if he has a similar drop off as last season. If the drop off happens, I would think he would be looking to leave and go somewhere a little easier - probably Saudi. To be fair to him though, he has not yet had an offer to even think about whether he wants to stay or not. Good luck to him either way, he has been sensational for us and I am just grateful I got to witness him playing for us.}

Absolutely nailed it Footyfan. As fans we expect players to show loyalty, but then when they do show loyalty it's somehow twisted to being a crime anyway. Damned if they do, damned if they don't! Salah's a legend. He's currently our 5th top scorer of all time and if he scores 16 more goals this season he goes past Billy Liddell into 4th, and if he get's 29 more he'll go past Gordon Hogdson into 3rd. Imagine predicting that on the day he signed from Roma. You'd have been called deluded. Legend is over used but of all the players we've had post Steven Gerrard, Salah is the one that nobody in their right mind can dispute. His sheer volume of goals alone cement his place in Liverpool history. He'll likely still be in our all time top 10 goal scorers in 100 years time when we're all long gone and our grandkids are talking about football and how highly we used to speak of Salah before we passed away. His achievements at Liverpool will transcend generations and even when they're forgotten from living memory, the numbers will still stand tall as a reminder someone truly special wore the shirt for us. Generally though the posters on this site are very respectful towards Mo and appreciative of what he's done at the club. Simply look at this thread. Everyone here is saying the same thing; he's earned the right to do what he wants. He really has.
29 Aug 2024 13:02:48
Sorry MK, I still can't class Salah as a club legend. Exceptional player, yes. But legend no, for me anyway. He has never once delivered in a final for the club and has actually done the opposite, gone missing. The only final he ever looked like really tearing up on his own was the one were Ramos deliberately injured him. For me, legends so gle handedly win big games on their own.
29 Aug 2024 13:04:46
I can’t follow the logic that “the club should have sorted x’s contract out months ago” - in this case Mo - if the player doesn’t wish to negotiate or renew.
A contract has a finite period and as part of the process everybody involved in signing the contract must surely be aware of its duration and that it will come to an end? I
I suppose these days there is a blame culture and somebody has to be at fault but it really doesn’t always need to be the case that someone has done something wrong.
29 Aug 2024 13:26:22
The only time I've seen mo have drop off during his spell at lfc has been after african nations when it held in Jan. happened twice and both times he came back and had v poor ending to season (by his standards) . Other than that mo has been mr consisent during his 7/ 8 years with us, good as guranteeing u a goal every game beit an assist r scoring himself. i've nodoubt he will score 25+ this season.
29 Aug 2024 13:28:10
WDW3
Bang on.
Zubimendi chose not to join. As is his right.
Mo may choose to not sign a new deal. As is his right.
We might not offer one. As is our right.
Weird entitlement abounds. I want this thing so it must be so.
29 Aug 2024 13:29:07
How do other clubs manage the contract process WDW? I can’t think of any other major club who have put themselves in our position. It’s incompetence.
29 Aug 2024 13:33:37
Everyone is entitled to their opinions, that’s what makes this beautiful game so great.
However, I can’t get onboard with fans criticising someone like Mo. Just look at what he has achieved for the club and also for himself. Football started before 1992 but a lot of fans forget that. Look at his stats since the beginning of LFC and you will see what a truly fantastic servant he has been to us.
Good luck to him, whatever he decides over the next 12 months. I would love him to stay, but if he leaves I wish all the best and thank him.
Also for the person saying he can’t class him as a legend because what has happened in finals, behave. How many of our greats down the years haven’t turned up in finals. Plus didn’t he score a penalty in the first minutes of a Champions League Final!?
29 Aug 2024 14:13:47
Stuie boy. Salah is and will always be a club legend.
29 Aug 2024 15:38:55
Ed01, interesting to hear your perspective on Salah.
Would like to hear your perspective on VVD and TAA as well.
Even though Trent is a boyhood red, I’m beginning to worry that the long this drags on, the less likely he will be signing.
Part of human nature, it gives you the time to think and convince yourself to try something new, even though you are inclined in the first place.
{Ed001's Note - he was ready to sign, no idea why it never got done. Liverpool have dropped the ball on this one and if he has had second thoughts, who can blame him?}
29 Aug 2024 16:42:45
Whilst I’d obviously prefer the club to get some money from his transfer we can’t really grumble too much. He’s more than paid us back whilst he’s been with us. What did we pay - £35m?
If he wants to chase one final big pay day we can’t really begrudge him that.
