Edwards and Hughes have a great track record, and will not have taken this decision lightly. If he is deemed to be the best option out there, for the available price, then im all in.

Not every player we sign has to be world class. It's about getting the right fit for the team. Sometimes it'll be a Wirtz, sometimes it'll be a Robertson.

Robertson absolutely was a world class left back in his prime though, Tristan, the only other left back on his level at the time was Davies, and Davies was reliant on pace and athleticism. Maybe the better comparison here would be wijnaldum or matip?
Anyway I wouldn't want to buy Gordon either, but he would be 50 times a better purchase than gittens, who is in the same category as leao for me but worse.

Got to admit that I don't really care what we pay for players (or what we get for players) or if posters here think they are world class or not.
We have a load of clever folks employed to ensure we can afford our signings, and there are at least 115 reasons why I think they are doing a good job.
All I care about is winning stuff.
If the wheeling and dealing this summer means we hit the ground running next season and are in the frame for all 4 trophies again, then, as a fan, I am very happy!

Great player. I agree that his age goes against our usual transfer ideology but you need a balance of youth and experience in a squad. He is the prime age for a striker and has all of the attributes to massively improve that area of the squad.

MK not really, he has average a goal every2 games in a weak Italian league. I’d also argue he was more explosive and a better player a few years ago than he is now. IMO he won’t score over 15 a season for us if he signs and will make our attack a lot more one dimensional as he will want to drop deep and occupy the space that Wirtz should be operating in. Unless we sign a LW with electric pace who constantly wants to get in behind it won’t work.

@Vango, your first eight words made me laugh out loud.
In general, the growing preoccupation with cost, age, hair colour etc over footballing skills is really becoming really tiresome. If the people in charge consider a player is ‘the right player at the right price’ then that’s the end of story. These people won the PL either way a team that had been written off as contenders, not least on this very forum.
Martinez is a class player and if the club want him then show some faith and don’t worry about the cost, I don’t think the forum is going to be asked to foot the bill anyway.

“World class”were not my words, they were used to describe the mystery striker who “everyone had forgotten about” ( except PSG’s defenders) .
I don’t crave world class signings, I just thought the use of that description for Lautaro was misleading.
He’s a good finisher, certainly better than Darwin at that, but he’s a bit pedestrian for the premier league. I think, at his age, the dramatic change of ‘gamespeed’ might make him struggle - as it did Darwin.
Anyway, all our signings get a clean slate with me, I hope he does prove me completely wrong.

Martinez is awful and I would want him nowhere near our club I am also quite sure Slot would not be daft enough to sign a footballer as poor as Lautaro. If this was true I would be amazed not good enough for the Premier League let alone Liverpool fc.

It makes sense if he has a release clause. If he signs a 5yr deal it will take him to Salahs age and you could still sell him on to the Saudis if it doesn't work out.

Media is saying Atlético is interested in him for €100M. I don't see us paying that for him and would not think that would be right proce for us. For those knocking his goal rate in Italy, it is worth noting that he did score 9 in 14 games in the CL last season. For comparison Mbappe got 7 in 14, Dembele got 8 in 15, Vini Jr got 8 in 12, Salah got 4 in 9 and Wirtz got 6 in 9.

I am surprised so many people don’t rate Lautaro Martinez.
He is a top player and has been one of the best strikers over recent years, consistently putting up 25+ goals.
Last year was a lower output and tbh I can’t say I watched much serie a football last year either but the guy had a proven track record and is a winner - Serie A titles, copa Italias, World Cup,
I would say he is much more proven than:
Gyokeres
Ekitike
Sesko
Delap
Cunha.
