So Akira, not to ask a silly question but who is this striker signing that's even more exciting than wirtz? Or is that not happening now?
07 Jun 2025 09:46:20
Akira said the meeting was planned for 7 June, not the announcement ?.
07 Jun 2025 09:46:32
He did not say he was signing but that we are making efforts to sign. The player he already mentioned is Lautaro Martinez. And he said in his own opinion might be more exciting than Wirtz. that's subjective and he was giving his opinion.
Let's see how everything pans out but transfers are fluid anyway. Even the great Ed002 who so clearly had inside knowledge could not fortell everything.
07 Jun 2025 09:50:24
RTFP
I’ve wanted to do that for a long time.
07 Jun 2025 09:59:44
Akira, Carra and Thefields all seem to have similar information that would indicate we’re meeting with Inter Milan today to discuss the prospects of signing Lautaro Martinez.
07 Jun 2025 10:03:08
He already said that it's lautaro.
07 Jun 2025 10:21:21
As much as I think he’d be a fantastic signing, Lautaro Martínez will be 28 when the season starts, is under contract until 2029, captains Inter, and doesn’t speak English. He won’t come cheap, and I just can’t see Liverpool spending big on a player with little to no resale value.
07 Jun 2025 10:25:20
What are the chances all three are great friends in on all these meetings but have no idea who they are. Next meeting lads- one of you drop in that “Akira is your favourite movie- you’ve watched it 20 times now” I imagine the conversation will turn to “macca was my fav player. But now its carra” of course at this point the third will need to say…. um…. eh…. “i used to like forests? But i’m a fields fan now cos of the…. uh…grass? ” Perfect.
07 Jun 2025 10:31:36
Possible players going the other way also being discussed. Fede / Tsimi / Elliott?
07 Jun 2025 11:53:44
All players have a re-sale value as long as there is a retirement league in Saudi.
FSG have proven that they will attempt to buy the right players if they are available - world class forwards are not common, Martinez is that so why wouldn't we be in for him?
Maybe we'll end up with him and Osimhen if Diaz, Fede, Nunez and Jota all leave.
07 Jun 2025 12:01:08
Martinez is a mile of Wirtz, absolutely no where near. Yes he can finish but he’s easily bullied and not quick enough. A hard pass.
07 Jun 2025 12:02:20
With Wirtz, Salah and Macca's playmaking abilities, a nippy striker who can make darting runs in behind would be my preference. Other than Isak or Alvarez, I am not sure who else that could be.
07 Jun 2025 12:17:11
Agreed FPF, keep the powder dry or get a youngster with potential in.
07 Jun 2025 12:24:35
Lewandowski in his 30s moved to Barcelona for around £40m. Kane in his to 30s moved to Bayern for around £80m. Sa.
07 Jun 2025 12:31:50
I still don't see why all this is been taken as gospel, get the feeling people seen an Ed002 shaped hole and decided to have a bit of fun filling it.
07 Jun 2025 12:49:26
Pace yes Mark. Bullied? No chance. Martinez is tough and strong.
07 Jun 2025 12:52:01
I may be remembering this wrong but didn’t one of the Eds (I think ed001 but apologies if not) say that his missus deals with the clubs on his behalf and she’s no end of trouble?
I may be thinking about somebody else but I thought it was Martinez.
{Ed001's Note - not Martinez. Not even close. You are thinking of Mauro Icardi.}
07 Jun 2025 12:56:21
The club has since jurgen anyways if there was no one there worth buying then they have passed. Unless Alvarez, isak or haaland become available then I’d pass. The money being touted for these so called prospects is daft when we have one of our own out on loan. Give him a chance until someone worth buying comes along.
07 Jun 2025 13:14:37
@Flrian - nobody with the merest smidgeon of a functioning brain takes anything on a RUMOURS page on a football fans forum as Gospel.
Even if a contributor might say something true about a possible transfer there is no guarantee that it will stay true - circumstances change as, and again as anybody with the functioning brain will know, transfer windows progress and clubs and players expectations and priorities change too.
07 Jun 2025 13:30:30
Sorry but how is Martinez more exciting than Wirtz? Wirtz is the most complete 10 on the market. Lautaro Martinez doesn’t really make sense to me because he’s neither the young high ceiling (often expensive) type or the older reliably high quality but cheaper (because there’s low sell on value) kind of player we target under Edward’s. Seems he’s older yet neither prolific or cheap, and will be on big wages.
07 Jun 2025 13:43:53
Dont know about that West.
07 Jun 2025 13:45:31
VVD bullied him, and he cried off and stopped trying. Rather keep Jota.
07 Jun 2025 14:39:02
Always thought martinez was overrated, better than nunez r jota alright and if he was younger with room to get better maybe go for him but he wouldn't be my choice for the striker signing.
07 Jun 2025 14:56:29
And how is Lautaro not prolific? He’s scored between 20-25 league goals in each of the previous three seasons, this year being the only exception. The vibe around Inter has been weird for a while, the manager has got off abruptly, the legal case levelled against them, something has been off. Even then, 12 league goals and 9 in the champions league isn’t an abhorrent return.
I’d love Alvarez or Isak but they aren’t gettable at the moment, we have to be realistic. We need a striker, that is a fact. Going into next season relying on Nunez, Jota, or neither if both are sold, is suicide. Martinez is experienced at the top level of the game, proven, hard working, durable, and fits the profile of what Slot would likely want from a striker.
He isn’t perfect, but we can only play the hand that we have been dealt. You cannot buy players who are not there; that is what Richard Hughes really means by ‘opportunistic’. I’d be over the moon with Martinez as opposed to spending £70 million on Ekiteke or Sesko, I don’t think the value or the quality is there, highly likely to be another Sancho or Werner type situation.
Quite honestly the striker position, along with left wing, is beginning to worry me. The quality just isn’t available in the market. This is a move that would be a more than satisfactory outcome.
07 Jun 2025 15:25:29
Rodrygo on the left, Martinex through the middle, Mo on the right, and Wirtz floating about in the ten role.
07 Jun 2025 15:35:59
Bottom line is if we sell Nunez and Jota we’re going to need someone.
Isak and Alvarez are ideal, but if we can’t get them, who’s left?
Can’t go into the new season defending the title without a new centre forward ??♂️.
07 Jun 2025 15:40:05
Ah my bad ed001. I knew the one I meant played for inter at some point anyway!
07 Jun 2025 15:45:07
Aoe, maybe I should just randomly start humming the Fields of Anfield Road and see what happens ?.
07 Jun 2025 17:42:52
Can we just strike alvarez from these rumours, his wife hated England and he left for Spain, he’s not coming back after a year, would cost the earth so can we just leave this one as not happening.
07 Jun 2025 18:00:46
Can't say I overly remember his performance against us outside of the screamer he scored.
From games I watched this season and others he is stocky and strong. Don't see him being bullied to be honest.
For me, I d be quite excited by him if the price is decent.
07 Jun 2025 18:02:25
AW the LW position worries you! If Wirtz comes we would have 7 players who could play there. It’s our most stacked position in history.
07 Jun 2025 18:31:22
@Iamnoonoo - Where did you hear that Lautaro Martinez doesn’t speak English?
I work with a couple of Argentinians and I asked them if Lautaro can speak English, and they said yes he can.
07 Jun 2025 20:04:42
Yes Mark, the reason LW worries me is in the event if Diaz leaves. Even if he doesn’t, I’d prefer someone with more pace to terrify the opposition down that side. PSG showed us up for how slow we have become in attack, i like Gakpo and Diaz but if there’s an opportunity to inject some pace, i’d like to take it.
Problem is, the market is garbage. Gordon? Nowhere near good enough. Leao? Maybe, would be a risk, seems overpriced. Rodrygo? The club seem to love him but i worry that his wages and fee would not justify the player that he is, especially if we’re signing him to play a position where we have no data on how he’d do.
Diaz has valuable qualities that are hard to replace, too. He battles like nothing else, gets you out of tight spaces, dances past the opposition, drags you up the field. He doesn’t have the best end product and isn’t the quickest winger in the world. He’s upgradable, but who is out there? Whether he stays or goes, the position worries me.
07 Jun 2025 20:07:40
The only signing that would be more exciting than Wirtz would be Harry Kane. I’d take a punt, two year deal plus year optional. He’s got his trophy at Bayern and I think he with Wirtz would guarantee us the league. But I’m also a realist ?.
07 Jun 2025 20:36:14
Hard pass on Kane.
Lautaro is definitely an upgrade but I would not class him as “world class” or more exciting than Wirtz.
He can definitely finish.
He’s just a bit unproven at premier league pace and nudging past his peak.
07 Jun 2025 21:00:32
Frode Kippers…. funniest thing I’ve heard today.
Only signing more exciting than Wirtz….
Priceless ?.
07 Jun 2025 22:11:09
Didn't Ollie Watkins pull out of the England game, and last I heard, he can speak English, guaranteed goals with Watkins.
08 Jun 2025 02:04:14
Quick correction - Martinez does speak English. He also speaks Italian and a little German. English is pretty common at inter they've made speaking it a primary rule there, following in the footsteps of German teams.
08 Jun 2025 04:59:07
I have a feeling we'll be stuck with Jota as no interest in him due to injuries.
Chance we get stuck with Darwin too but if there was an offer for £40m, I'd take it. Unless a Saudi team comes knocking for him AND he's also willing to go there, I can't see many teams in Europe willing to pay more than 40m for him.
Gakpo isn't going.
Diaz I doubt goes anywhere other than Barça and they got no money so I bet he stays for another year and then goes to Barça for cheaper with only a year left in his contract.
So I think LW stays as is. Striker we get someone in but maybe more of a temporary solution/ not someone we'd consider our top target. And CB weget someone too. That's probably it for incomings.
