Liverpool have mishandled their summer transfer plans by completely underestimating the market. They turned down a massive offer from Saudi Arabia for Darwin Nunez in January, banking on a bigger fee in the summer. That opportunity has now vanished. Al Nassr moved on to sign Jhon Durán instead, and Al Hilal are now closing in on Victor Osimhen—further shrinking the Saudi market and eliminating Liverpool’s best chance to offload Nunez for a significant fee.

Liverpool had hoped to generate over £150 million from the sales of Nunez and Luis Díaz, with plans to reinvest the money. Now, they’re staring at a return of less than half that amount. While Saudi clubs remain interested in Díaz and would be willing to spend big, the Colombian isn't keen—he only wants Barcelona, who can’t even afford to pay more than £40 million. Liverpool would not sell for that.

To make matters worse, interest in Nunez now seems limited to potential loan-to-buy deals, which don’t suit Liverpool’s needs. What could’ve been a well-planned summer rebuild now looks like a transfer mess of the club’s own making.

Is this just your opinion? If this is based on any kind of tangible fact a week into the first of 2 transfer windows then please point us all in the direction of your source (s) if available.

Massive mess, how can we cope if we have to keep Diaz whilst adding Wirtz, Frimpong and Kerkez. Disaster. Not sure what we are going to do.

08 Jun 2025 11:33:03
Mate I’ll be honest, even if Nunez and Diaz both stay I’m still buzzing with Wirtz, Kerkez, Frimpong, Pesci and maybe that Ait Boudlal. I’d have been buzzing with just Wirtz to be quite honest with you.

If this is a botched summer transfer window, sign me up again for next year. Our next gen fans are pathetic to be brutally honest. When I was a kid I had to watch a summer consisting of Konchesky, Poulsen, Jovanovic, Wilson and J. Cole.

Miss me with that “transfer mess” BS.

08 Jun 2025 11:33:33
Why would they sell in January when we was chasing the title? I’m sure the club would take winning the league and a lower transfer fee. I see it as Akin to buying a player in January.

08 Jun 2025 11:35:42
In fairness the club are still making record sponsorship and kit deals and have had a lot of revenue in from winning the league and a good league campaign in the new CL format.

Also throw in record revenue from the stadium expansion and money coming in is decent.

If only more of our super fans stopped watching games on YouTube and paid to actually watch the club instead of preaching then there would be more money again.

08 Jun 2025 11:39:43
Can understand what your saying but we don’t have any clue what is happening in the club - there was news that Edward’s went to the USA to ask for Wirtz money as this wasn’t planned and got the AOK - that doesn’t scream like that money was included in the plans we already had

If you think about not spending any significant money (how bad is that as £12M would change most of our lives) and prize monies from this year we would have had a decent budget, I can’t see LFC saying these plans we have made all year we aren’t going to do now because £150M is going on Wirtz

LFC would have seen Nunez at the end of the year I know money doesn’t work like this but if we didn’t start him to save the extra £14M reported we would have had to pay Benfica then if we get a reduced fee of £35M fromA Madrid, we are close to £50M only losing around £20M on him - I know that’s not how the money works I’m not pretending to know

But to say they have mishandled the transfer market when we are looking likely to bring in a new GK with a potential future GK, Frimpong, Kerkez, Wirtz and then maybe Martinez/ Isak is a hell if a statement would hate to see who would come in with an alright transfer window never mind a Richard Hughes worldie ?.

08 Jun 2025 11:47:08
Hi, everyone I’m new to the site love reading all the info here, I heard rumours that we are going to use Salah as our main striker with frimpong out wide, be interesting especially if we can’t get our top targets.

08 Jun 2025 11:50:55
And out come the boo boys a week into the window. Nunez helped us win a title and was kept as a potentially significant member of the squad. For making that one call you think we've messed up an entire window? I hope fsg replace Hughes with you when the pitchforks invariably come out for him, then.

08 Jun 2025 12:00:21
0% ball knowledge.

08 Jun 2025 12:02:06
If we only sign those 3 players and keep the majority of the squad together it’s more than good enough.

08 Jun 2025 12:08:14
LFC haven't mishandled anything regards Nunez, yes hindsight is a wonderful thing but we were fighting for the title. What if Gakpo, Diaz, Jota etc had all been injured for a long time. Supporters would have been screaming saying why did they sell Nunez, the title is more important blah blah .

08 Jun 2025 12:12:10
I’m thinking adding the players we’re signing without letting any go looks a good start to a transfer window to me.

08 Jun 2025 12:15:49
Sorry but how can any of you lot advocate giving nunez another chance. The club/ slot decided last season his liverpool career was over and I have to agree he isn't the answer we require anyway you look at it. An improvement is required.

08 Jun 2025 12:16:06
Troll of the day goes to…

You’re just embarrassing yourself.

08 Jun 2025 12:20:54
The window will be open for quite some time after the club World Cup so I wouldn’t say we have mishandled outgoings just yet. I think if we weren’t to move Diaz on, we would work hard on moving on Nunez, jota and maybe chiesa to generate the money we’d need to invest towards a striker and I suspect some of the wirtz transfer. Don’t forgot the likes of Elliot, Tsimikas etc that will probably be on their way as well. I think if we were to keep Diaz, salah and Gakpo, then I’d say all we really need is a top striker, and maybe retaining the services of chiesa or Elliot to have some depth to our attack, bearing in mind wirtz and frimpong can play as forwards as well.

08 Jun 2025 12:34:41
Mess? We have massively strengthened with the signings of frimpong, kerkhez and Wirtz. Even if we don’t sell Nuñez or Diaz then we are still much better off. I strongly suspect we will sell Nuñez at least though and replace with better.

08 Jun 2025 12:44:06
There's glass half empty thinking and then there's breaking the glass and smashing the shards into your face.

The OP sounds like it was written by ChatGPT, in response to the question "paint a scenario in which Liverpool's summer transfer activity turns out to be a disaster". Perhaps it was.

Don't know how you can claim to know what the club's original summer plans were. Even the genuine ITKs only know bits and pieces. The only time we can begin to make a judgement on the success or otherwise of LFC's summer trading is on 1st September. But so far, it's looking pretty damned tasty.

08 Jun 2025 12:44:48
A lot of you are missing the point. Yes, Wirtz, Kerkez, and Frimpong would be incredible signings, especially if a striker follows.

But the reality is, only Frimpong has actually been signed. The others haven’t. So ask yourself, why have the Kerkez and Wirtz deals been dragging on for weeks despite being heavily reported? The answer is simple — funds are clearly stretched. That's why addons have been vital to the Wirtz deal.

Do you really think we’re going to go out and buy a top-class striker and a centre-back without any major outgoings? Liverpool were banking on the Saudi market, which now looks to have collapsed for them.

08 Jun 2025 13:03:15
That's bait.

08 Jun 2025 13:17:37
I'll bite, if any of what you say is right lam then expect the club to pull the plug on the Wirtz signing and look at other options. Too many people think it's football manager when you list a player and they are sold immediately and buying one takes two clicks of a button.

08 Jun 2025 13:17:40
I am fairly certain a multi billion dollar business would not invest funds on a hunch that the Saudis may or may not bid for Nunez. That would effectively be financial suicide.
They would have forecast the expenditure on actual income generation and in line with profit and sustainability rules.

08 Jun 2025 13:19:11
What an effing WUM, you’ve been whinging for days OP. Go back to FIFA if you are still so disappointed.

08 Jun 2025 13:40:49
We can't always bank on using Saudi money to rescue our windows. We supposedly have the smartest football and business people running the club. If so, they should be smart enough to have scenarios worked out.

I also don't think Barcelona will want to mess about with Edwards after last time. We're still enjoying that Coutinho sale in 2025.

08 Jun 2025 13:43:00
im sure they will sell nunez, clubs are just getting ready for World club cup and for LFC getting RB, LB and Wirtz sorted first.

I think once that is over we see Nunez go, and Jota too, there surely has to be clubs interested in him too
Just 1st is when the window usually opens any earlier was a bonus.

08 Jun 2025 13:44:03
Absolutely, MK I agree. I genuinely couldn’t care less who we end up selling, especially with the calibre of players we’re being linked with coming in. Sure, we need to offload a few, but that’s the club’s responsibility, not ours.

As fans, all that really matters is that the squad is being strengthened and clearly, the people at the top aren’t afraid to spend this summer. That alone is a huge positive. I mean, who was even talking about Wirtz before the rumours surfaced? And when they did, most wrote it off as fantasy yet here we are.

And still, somehow, people find a way to moan. It’s laughable but also a bit exhausting.

Just enjoy it. This has all the signs of being one of those iconic transfer windows.

08 Jun 2025 14:08:06
It’s probably half term, Salah. Bloody kids and their FIFA career mode expertise.

08 Jun 2025 14:17:13
What if, it could be a big if, that the arrivals of Frimpong, Kerkez and Wirtz somehow help Nunez to up his game?

I've seen lots of players play differently with different players.

08 Jun 2025 14:25:16
So hughes and Edwards based their entire summer spending and the future of the club around Al hilal buying Nuñez rather than osimhen or anybody else lol. If that is true then they are about as smart as my pet rabbit and need to switch to bagging groceries rather than managing a football club.

And how quickly do you think a transfer should be completed? Cunha was linke.

08 Jun 2025 14:26:07
why have the Kerkez and Wirtz deals been dragging on for weeks despite being heavily reported? The answer is simple - this ain't EA FC.

08 Jun 2025 14:41:47
This was actually quite funny. There is no way that on refusal of a offer that a club would 'budget' for that value for future windows. Each player will have a market value, the amount the club would like to realise if available, that would not be adjusted for 'saudi interest'.

IF Barcelona only offer £40m for a player at his peak value, they won't get him, but our agreeing to discuss will attract other interest and market value may be achieved through competition. As for Nunez, when the forward merrygoround is in progress, his value will be in replacing one the 'big' names, at that point he will attract lots of different types of transfer interest.

It seems the OP has too much time on his hands at the weekend and should probably go out and enjoy it, rather than making up fantasies about transfer 'disasters'

08 Jun 2025 14:48:09
Funds stretched? We spent nothing last season and this season spent no more than 5 million.

08 Jun 2025 14:54:59
There is a world class player somewhere in Nunez…if he stays I’m not unhappy… if he applies himself in training and works on his composure and finishing I think he could be as good as anybody.

08 Jun 2025 14:56:06
Dragging on lmfao. What you fail to realise is that this is called negotiation, any commercial deal that requires two parties to settle on a price requires this. It is not just football, but all commercial contracts that have a sale of goods for a substantial amount take time. Nothing new in a deal of £100m+ taking time to sort out.

08 Jun 2025 15:46:41
Hopefully the funds for Wirtz are not dependant on sales but I have a feeling they will be.

Kerkez and Frimpong sounds like affordable signings.
Adding Wirtz might be too much of a stretch without sales.

08 Jun 2025 16:21:02
Some people need to give their head a wobble.

Wirtz was on holiday and international duty, he wants just us and no one else. The deal is a club and perhaps league record. These things allowed us to take our time with the deal. The money for Wirtz is not dependent on sales or comes from this summers budget. Hence Michael Edwards flying to the states to discuss and get the funding for it.

As for it being a mess, give over. We ain't even got to the proper summer transfer window yet.

08 Jun 2025 16:34:01
OP -Absolute drivel. your world must be depressing if all you can focus on are the phantoms of your mind.

Nunez will find a new stable, or somewhere to graze.

08 Jun 2025 16:30:45
Negotiating a payment structure with add ons instead of plopping all your cash on the table is sound sense and not the alarmist nonsense you are peddling. Imagine Hughes huddled under the covers doomscrolling updates on osimhen before Edwards rings him in the middle of the night: 'you have to get on the phone with Bayer, dick, our brilliant plan backfired spectacularly'

Imagine.

08 Jun 2025 16:39:40
I have to pay for Sky TNT and Amazon to cover all our games. I used to buy a home shirt each season as my contribution even though I am now 38 but the price now is scandalous.

08 Jun 2025 18:44:13
As I write this it’s the 42nd response to the trolls 2 posts. Well played sir.
