With all this talk of LB'S and Kerkez joining, he looks a great signing too. I have been thinking back over some of our LB'S and how good Robbo has actually been in that position.
I loved Riise and looking at his stats he scored 31 goals and 36 assists over 7 seasons. Honestly thought he was a great player. Looking at Robbos contributions he has only scored 11 goals but has a huge 67 assists.
Then we have Alberto Moreno who I thought was ok but not of the quality of the two above.
Alan Kennedy was a great but I don't really remember him as it's more premier League football for me.
Then the name Paul Konchesky popped into my mind! Sorry everyone. That was under whacky woy and dire imo, I'm sure many share the same sentiment.
Bob Paisley himself was a wing half.
So who has been your favorite LB. Robbo's legs might be on their way for the style of play we are used to seeing from him. But what a great servant and player. What a great left foot too
YNWA ?.
{Ed078's Note - if it wasn't for injuries, then Fabio would be in with a shout. That said, I loved Riise, and he clearly loved the city. But, showing my age, Ronnie Moran (Mr Liverpool of his day) was quite the lad.
17 Jun 2025 09:12:16
The great Rob Jones needs mention.
17 Jun 2025 09:12:49
Ah left backs sorry.
17 Jun 2025 09:20:23
If I remember correctly Paul Konchesky did at least give it his all when he played. Whether he was any good or not I won't comment but as a result of his attitude I don't look back at him in a negative way.
17 Jun 2025 09:21:51
Gerry Byrne.
Apart from being part of the World Cup winning squad of 1966, he played almost the entire 1965 FA Cup Final win against Leeds with a broken collar bone. It didn't seem to affect him at all.
Tough as granite.
17 Jun 2025 09:26:36
Stevie Nicol. Left back, right back, centre back, midfield. My favourite player as a boy.
17 Jun 2025 09:28:26
If I'm playing creating a team of dream Liverpool players I solidly remember playing (going back to 1997 I guess), Robertson is undoubtedly my starting LB. What a servant and leader. Love him.
17 Jun 2025 09:36:48
Barney Rubble for me . ( I know not the Premier league ) also he scored the winner v Real Madrid n scored the winning penalty v Roma aswel.
17 Jun 2025 09:37:50
Riise was good going forward but a terrible defender.
17 Jun 2025 09:45:40
Jim Beglin had a great career stolen from him.
Aurelio was absolutely superb.
Kennedy was a good player in a great team.
It’s not really recency bias to say Robbo is by far our best since Kennedy and probably better than Barney.
Bjornbye wasnt terrible.
Riise played in a winning side but was essentially a wing back.
Julian Dicks is as bad as the offensively bad Koncesky.
17 Jun 2025 09:46:12
Ronnie Moran was recommended by the postman @Ed078 I had a search after your comment. Proper hard game then without the protection today's players get.
@Kenny Rob Jones is a good shout too. As is @KC Gerry Byrne. Two tough no nonsense LB'S
Have to agree regarding Konchesky. It wasn't lack of effort on his part. Just a victim of circumstances really.
Well reds you have given me some names from history that have added to my knowledge on our awesome club and past teams. So many greats looking back.
YNWA ?.
17 Jun 2025 09:50:23
I never thought riise was particularly good despite having an absolute rocket of a shot when he could keep them down.
Aurelio was a brilliant player when fit, a very gifted footballer. Him renewing his contract was one of the few bright spots of roy's reign, though of course Roy would sign and play konchesky shortly after.
Moreno was a trier but he looked short of a few brain cells football intelligence wise, also that performance against Sevilla was probably on par with karius, except Moreno didn't have the excuse of having sustained a concussion during the game.
Konchesky was absolutely horrific, I remember his mom coming out in the press to say her boy was too good for us when we were giving him stick for being bad every time he took to the field. Not sure why his ma thought that was going to improve the situation for her son haha
Bjornebye I remember fondly, but it's been so long my nostalgia might actually make up for whatever shortcomings he had. Staunton as well.
Warnock was a very serviceable player but has since become a completely bitter and unlikeable git who takes whatever opportunity he has to complain about Rafa.
And then there's Enrique, who despite loving the club and being proud to be a Liverpool player (and continuing to love the club by all accounts) was, when he wasn't injured, kind of lazy and lackadaisical when he did take to the field.
17 Jun 2025 09:51:39
Moreno was awful.
17 Jun 2025 09:55:29
David Burrows weren't too bad. although I was still fairly young then and can't remember loads of games he played. Barry Venison (sure he had a stint at LB too) Byornebye and a delicious cross on him. He was good too.
17 Jun 2025 10:06:30
Joey Jones not the best technically but the effort and commitment was off the scale
Alec Lindsey was a great LB too.
17 Jun 2025 10:10:29
For me David Burrows was one of the worst left backs, I put him below Paul Konchesky (and he ended up playing for Everton) . Perhaps not behind Julian Dicks though. :)
The first time I saw Burrows he put in a man of the match performance but every time after, especially when I followed Liverpool on the Radio, all I used to hear was "to Burrows, Burrows puts it out of play", or "Burrows gives it away". When I was able to watch him play it was the same story but I'd see him then point at others and shout instructions to cover up the fact he'd made yet another mistake. It was like he his incompetence was just part of his game and everyone should expect it and compensate for it.
17 Jun 2025 10:14:02
My 11 year old heart was broken when Steve Staunton left back in ‘91. He was well past his best when he returned but it was nice for nostalgic reasons.
17 Jun 2025 10:18:15
Going on players I’ve seen since play properly (2004 onwards) who have played at least half a season for us as at LB I’d say:
1. Robbo
2. Riise
3. Aurelio
4. Tsimikas
5. Enrique
6. Moreno
7. Insua
8. Traore
9. Dossena
10. Konchesky
Don’t think I’ve missed anyone there. Crazy thing is, I reckon Milner would be 3rd on that list if he was actually a LB.
17 Jun 2025 10:32:08
I did love Riise and Aurelio but Robertson has definitely performed at a level above, he's been the best in my lifetime no doubt.
Shout out to Milner who put a good shift in for us at LB when it clearly wasn't where he wanted to play.
17 Jun 2025 10:36:53
Dont forget Djimi Traore.
17 Jun 2025 10:51:28
Dossena for his two goals in one week against Real and Utd. Predominantly a LB but used as a sub wing back. Other than that not worth a mention in this thread.
17 Jun 2025 10:22:22
Riise played a lot of football at left midfield for us which boosts his goals. Robbo definitely best lb I've seen in my time, it was a position we have struggled to sort threw the years a few v poor players by lfc standards have played there, moreno+kkonecksky to name 2.
Robbo completely proved me wrong as I never thought he would make it with us, ended up a world class player for 3/ 4 seasons.
Staunton would've been great for us if souness hadn't of sold him as he approaching his peak, an awful mistake.
17 Jun 2025 11:00:26
Joey Jones anybody.
17 Jun 2025 11:17:29
To reiterate. Rob Jones was a right back.
Under Evan’s he played left wing back to fit in McAteer, but he was a right back and arguably our best…. although Phil Neales trophy haul might have a word or two to say.
17 Jun 2025 12:00:29
Agree with whyowhy - Jim Beglin was destined for greatness before that clod Stevens did him.
17 Jun 2025 12:06:43
Phil Neal?
17 Jun 2025 12:15:12
Milner an under rated GOAT LB
Also Gomez played there quite a bit too when he was younger and fit. Thought he had a good stretch in that position for a make shift.
17 Jun 2025 12:23:45
Phil Neale was a right back mate.
17 Jun 2025 12:36:34
Guy’s, wasn’t Crazy Horse a LB for a stint too? I liked Alberto M, he loved the club, but he didn’t have the composure imo.
Cannot disagree with some of the names above, I met Stevie Staunton (I wish I never) .
17 Jun 2025 13:01:54
Not one mention of the great Aly Cisshoko?
17 Jun 2025 13:08:43
A good left back is seemingly rare.
Uniteds best for years was right footed.
Maldini was half LB and half CB.
Carlos was a winger.
Alba was a winger.
It’s very hard to find ones that can defend as well as attack, that’s why Evra, Cole, Mendes and Robbo are so good.
A lot of people are ready to jettison Robbo as if he is some kind of liability. He is not. I hope Kerkez can be as good as him, I will be amazed if he’s better.
17 Jun 2025 13:25:53
Hughes, Lawrenson, all played left back. As did Venison. If I were to choose, I'd go for Nicol.
Premiership era, Robertson all day long.
17 Jun 2025 13:26:36
I was at the game when Jim Beglin snapped his ankle . we were quite close to it . could see his ankle at a horrible angle. everyone around me knew instantly it was a a very bad one . worst one was the lad from Coventry, think his name was Buust.
17 Jun 2025 13:49:36
David Busst. Absolute shocking injury. Players around couldn't look. Challenge by Denis Irwin, who was completely blameless. Sickening.
17 Jun 2025 13:51:56
David Buust’s leg still looks like a gnawed chicken drumstick in the flesh after two dozen operations. Worst football injury.
17 Jun 2025 14:47:35
I am 100% with Parny and Iron Man,
Our left back in the first ever LFC team to win its First European Cup for Liverpool Football Club in Rome 1977.
Some of them mentioned above should have been "Left Back" in the dressing room!
17 Jun 2025 14:52:20
Rome . yea that was his name . horrible wasnt it . first time I'd seen something like that.
Kenny. cheers for that update. think il leave my chicken dinner till tomorrow now ?.
17 Jun 2025 15:34:56
"W-O-W" Again!
Red Ted is telling you "something"? as he is like me and doesn't know who Phil Neale is?
Red Ted is also like me and knows who Phil Neal is however?
Mind you Phil Neal is the LFC player with the most medals in the Clubs History, only 22 honours medals! do the man justice please? Sadly Phil Neale does not have any, whoever he is?
17 Jun 2025 16:24:06
Jim Beglin. Awful injury robbed him and us of a really good player.
17 Jun 2025 17:15:29
To reiterate. Our former manager was Roy Evans.
Not Roy Evan.
17 Jun 2025 17:29:07
Robbo should have scored many more goals tbh he’s always got in great positions…. great lad apart from that. Expect kerkez to score more than him though.
{Ed025's Note - Pickford has scored more than Robbo Magico..
17 Jun 2025 18:28:59
I loved Bjournebye, even if it's just for the cross to Ruddock in the 3-3 vs Man United. He had a wand of a cross.
Rob Jones played left wing back when Mcateer played at Right wing back.
Aurelio was brilliant. I liked Riise what a striker of the ball, but always felt he was an accident waiting to happen.
17 Jun 2025 19:26:22
Alec Lindsay what a left peg, Joey Jones run through brick wall for LFC.
