"Liverpool want £47m for Elliot with a buy-back clause or £56m without. Leipzig value him closer to £26m, though a compromise around £40m could be reached depending on funds from the Simons sale".
12 Aug 2025 14:35:05
I think £40m is fair.
12 Aug 2025 14:37:39
"Value him close to £26m" is wild.
12 Aug 2025 14:40:13
40 works.
26 is low.
12 Aug 2025 14:43:16
Yet we are the only ones who get accused of low balling.
It’s a negotiation, the buyer always wants to pay less and the seller always wants more. A middle ground is usually reached.
12 Aug 2025 15:03:12
Keep Elliott and sell Jones. He is the better player by far.
Jones offers us nothing in terms of creativity.
12 Aug 2025 15:15:15
Baffles me how anyone could say Elliott is better than Jones. You must watch football with your eyes closed.
12 Aug 2025 15:23:01
People who can’t see the value of Jones form a perfect circle Venn diagram with those who didn’t see the value of Gini or why Thiago is the most talented player we’ve ever had.
And that’s fine, football to some is seen in its perfect form by Christian Ronaldo, some adore Modric, some David Silva, some Vitinha…. but Jones is not there, in a Slot and Klopp side to primarily be an attacking threat (he is a threat) but the main function is to be always up with play, to take the ball in extreme pressure and to move the ball to better positioned players. The other day he had a 100% pass completion in the Community Shield. Now against Palace, who are a very decent side, that is exceptional. It barely received a comment on social media because there was no instantly consumable clip to show this in a reel.
Very good managers play him regularly. He played a ton of games last year (about 50) and our win percentage is very high when he’s in the side.
Next time you watch him, try and switch off the confirmation bias and see how often he’s 10-25 feet away from whoever has the ball and is in position to bail them out. See how often his first touch buys him a yard and see how often he calms the play down when it’s starting to get too frenetic. You might begin to appreciate his role.

Elliott is a better footballer than Jones, he is technically streets ahead of Jones in my opinion.
Jones can adapt a bit more to different positions, doesn’t mean he is magnificent by any stretch at any of those positions tho.
If Elliott leaves he will have the better career in my opinion. Jones will never be a regular starter for Liverpool, again my opinion.
I must watch football with my eyes closed too ?.
12 Aug 2025 15:43:59
well said WhyOWhy!
12 Aug 2025 15:50:42
If Simmons is worth almost 70, how is Elliott worth 25? What are they smoking over there? Spice?
12 Aug 2025 16:02:29
Curtis' ball retention is superb, his composure is top notch, he presses decently well, is athletic and deceptively strong. His ball progression is not always great though he is much more of a carrier than a passer. What he does after carrying the ball is not always elite, admittedly, but he is a reliable midfield option in one of the three best teams in Europe, I can't abide people saying we only keep him because he's homegrown and a Scouser, it's nonsense.
That being said I really really don't think that he works very well in a pivot with Dom, he was playing the Grav role the other day dropping deeper towards the center backs so Wirtz could find space in midfield. Either Dom or Curtis have to play the 8 and have somebody play the 6. Against a poor team where we completely boss the ball, sure, play Curtis and Dom or Curtis and Macca, but against a decent team, I don't think it works.
Also, 26 million for Elliott is just a joke. You couldn't even get Jadon Sancho for 26 million and Elliott is twice the player.
12 Aug 2025 16:05:24
I watch Jones rather closely actually.
He is fine, generally, nothing exceptional.
He does get robbed off the ball rather easily, and he didn't suffer that fate against Palace because of the way Palace plays.
I would like a player who can do what he can and more, and I believe there are many players who are able to, even if Elliot might not be.
12 Aug 2025 16:08:22
Yes it was a 100% record but possession was slow allowing Palace the opportunity to drop deep. We were excellent on the offensive side of our game for much of the first half but energises dropped off and it was only a matter of time before Palace made use of our wasteless play. I haven't seen the stats. What was his winning tackle percentage. Anyhow my note was not about the Palace fixture, it is my view of him as a player. He is not a threat on the ball. We have better players that recycle and at the same time expose opponents weaknesses. There is no doubt he is a good squad player particularly if you want to take time out of the game in possession. I agree with a lot of what you say and perhaps i played him down a bit but as you say he is no Tiago. We have better.
12 Aug 2025 16:08:44
It is true that Jones did have a high pass success rate, they were mostly five yard passes sideways or backwards, and whereas recycling possession is fine his off the ball work is not very good, he tends to get caught ball watching far too often, his reading of danger is not great, seems do be all over the place defensively (made no tackles and made no interceptions, which implies he’s not up to being a number 6). There’s no doubt he has a decent first touch, and he’s ok in attacking situations, but he’s needs more than that. As for last season it’s worth mentioning that of the 19 games he started we drew or lost 9 of them and only kept clean sheets in 4 of them. For me he isn’t a starter and certainly him and Szonoszlai should never partner up in the midfield two again. Both of them are just too weak defensively and it leaves us soft through the centre.
12 Aug 2025 16:10:50
WhyOwhy - totally agree with your Thiago comment, too. He's technically the best player I've ever seen live, and I've seen Zidane play (in a charity match, in his mid-40s)
12 Aug 2025 16:11:51
Elliot and jones don’t play the same position
Jones can cover grav and even filled in at right back at time last season.
There just isn’t space for Elliot in the squad
And clearly Slot prefers Jones to Elliot. Just look at who he gave more appearances to last season.
12 Aug 2025 16:12:33
I don't always agree with you WOW but that's a very good post. The thing that frustrates me a bit with Jones though is that he quite often wants to take an easy pass backward when intuitively you want him to keep a move going forward.
12 Aug 2025 16:19:20
Robbo, you must watch games with your legs wrapped around your head. Jones who achieved 100% pass completions at the weekend somehow managed to stay invisible and offer nothing. Elliot is more direct, scores more and thinks on the front foot.
12 Aug 2025 16:24:40
Jones is a very good squad player and shows with his starts last season 50% in the league and 40% in CL.
Problem he will have is Wirtz signing could see those starts reduce rather increase.
12 Aug 2025 17:40:24
Jones has never been first choice at Liverpool and probably never will be.
12 Aug 2025 16:28:07
I prefer Elliott over Jones but the Injuries stopped Elliot moving ahead of Jones last season.
Jones will be gone in the 2026/ 2027 season, Wirtz is there now to pickup and also be the attacker to drive that ball forward to the last third.
12 Aug 2025 16:29:22
Jones all day long for me. Spot on analysis Why0Why. Not everyone is in the team to be creative, we have creative players that we've paid millions of money for who are creative. Jones is very valuable and if I'm right, rarely injured.
12 Aug 2025 16:38:22
Love Elliot but would choose Jones in my team every day of the week ahead of him. His ball retention and passing is streets ahead of Elliot.
Elliot is fantastic at dribbling, creating opportunities but Jones is press-resistant, similar to Gini and Macca and his passing ability has improved immensely - understanding that moving possession sideways or backwards is far better than trying to move it forward and lose it 50% of the time.
Watch Jones closely and he keeps hold of the ball in tight gaps.
We fell apart after he was taken off at the weekend.
12 Aug 2025 16:45:16
Jones and Elliot are both great players, Jones is actually technically better imo although many will disagree. You rarely seen Jones lose the ball.
It still baffles me that so many people don't rate Jones, yet all these great managers continue to select him and our winning ratio is huge and consistent when he's in the side.
I guess some people will only ever think a good footballer is someone who scores from outside the box and does the odd trick to get past a player.
12 Aug 2025 16:48:59
The Irish Rover.
He played 50 times last season. He’s a regular starter by definition and will be this season as well. So yes, I’d say your eyes probably are not fully open.
Unless I’ve missed a memo and 50 games isn’t regular.
12 Aug 2025 17:11:05
Watched him enough to say he should be a sub at best. I’ve been watching Liverpool for near on 45 years and no one will convince me otherwise.
12 Aug 2025 17:22:11
Tell them to Fxxk off, low balling us and holding prem clubs to ransom…. do 1.
12 Aug 2025 18:02:03
There is a response here (and there are a lot) that jones gets disposed regularly and that’s simply not true. So I will just ignore you.
There is also “he doesn’t create as much as Elliott” he also doesn’t come for as many crosses as Alisson, you know, because he does a very different job.
I agree with the person who says sometimes his ball progression is frustrating. It is. He could try more verticals and he could get rid earlier.
There is also the “he only passes sideways” they also said that of Hendo, the multi trophy winning excellent Captain. That is Jones’s role. To keep the ball, to be available to bail someone out and to hand it off to the attackers. He’s good at it.
He’s also just entering peak years, like next three seasons, he’s come back bigger and stronger and is an excellent part of the midfield unit. Ryan, Mac, Dom, Jones, Harvey and Endo. That’s it. Flozza Dubs is classed as a forward.
That area does most running and needs most rotation and his stats for wins per game mean factually he is not a drop off.
12 Aug 2025 18:11:55
Elliott hasn’t done a thing for over 12 months Frode. Literally nothing.
I’m not sure what games you are watching but I haven’t seen Elliott go past a man since before he broke his ankle. If front foot is running very slowly at an opposition player then stopping and passing inside then yeah there’s loads of front foot going on.
He can’t tackle, has no defensive positional awareness and doesn’t track runners.
I love the kid and had really high hopes for him at one stage but eventually you just have to call a spade a spade.
Jones is useful and his ball retention is decent. He does get caught on the ball in silly positions sometimes but we’re not saying he’s perfect here. Nor are we saying he’s any kind of answer as a regular starter. He’s a useful squad player.
With Elliott I fail to see anything that tells me he’s even that. The season before last he came on a few times late on and had an impact but since then he’s been absolutely dire in every aspect of his game.
12 Aug 2025 20:29:34
Almost every title winning squad has a Jones like player or two in their squad, United had Fletcher, Carrick, Park, Arsenal had Edu, Gilberto City Fernandinho, Chelsea Obi Mikel et al.
Squads have to have balance, not everyone has to be world class.
